steps to scandisk/defrag machine

I will send but the question is will you use it?

Do a general cleanup of your computer and if that doesn't help, than I would use the AOL Quick Restore.

To clean out unwanted files.

Start - Control Panel - Internet Options open -
Delete cookies, Delete files (select all off-line content) - Click OK to Exit.

Then go to Start - Run - Enter %temp% - Click OK - Click Edit - Click Select All - Delete.

Start - Run - Enter - C:\windows\temp - OK - and select everything except
temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete them.
If you don't see Temporary Internet files, cookies and History listed - select all and delete.
Then Restart your computer.

1. Error Checking- This takes about 35 minutes.
Start - my computer - right click local disk (C) - properties - Tools Tab -
Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start -
This requires a restart to begin.

2. Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK
Don't forget the space between c and /
You will need the Recovery CD that came with your PC if any thing is found wrong.
Don't insert unless asked for.

Then use the Defragmenter.
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Defragmenter - Analyze and Defragment.

If you computer starts running better download CCleaner and use the Clean and Registry.

Un check the Recycle Bin and Run and anything else you don't want removed.

cboy, what kind of a question is that, will I use it, do you think I don't take care of my machine? i do have a busy life and try to do the best I can with my time. Winter is coming here soon, and getting the gardens cleaned up, and the house tightened up for the season is taking a lot of time. I appreciate your concern as to whether or not I will use the information, and am glad to see that you have included everything. When I clean my computer it gets a dose of Ccleaner at the default settings, Defrag and Superantispyware. Job done.

Shaddy if you use the SFC (system file checker) that Cboy suggests be aware that you will need to go to the Microsoft site and download all the updates put out since your computer was built. SFC goes through Windows systematically checking that all the files are good and replacing any that might be corrupt. To me your computer is too new to need that action at this time. You are not a heavy duty surfer doll from what I read in your posts

What programs are you using for anti spyware and anti virus?

screwed up, posted wrong, owbist, thinking maybe you are right, cboy has over estimated my surfing I think, but I am using Avast antivirus, it runs all the time. Should I run it as a separate part of the cleanup after I am done to check all files folders, etc? Or, does it do that job when things come in, email, and over the internet? Curiosity is eating away here.
I am using superantispy as recommended by the group, and have a couple others as backups, not usually needed tho. I discover nothing left after running it, so maybe could delete those programs?

Shaddy by default Avast is set to scan incoming and outgoing emails plus downloaded files from the internet so you are safe.

I have had Avast for the last 6 months or so and until today have never checked it, always assuming it was doing it's thing to protect me. On looking around I noticed it has not done a full scan since the 18th, one week. Perhaps that is the time frame for a full scan, I have no idea but as I seem to have been protected I will accept that as the norm. As I write I am running a full scan just to satisfy my curiosity LOL.

Computer security is a personal preference thing. Some are overly concerned while others can adopt a couldn't care less attitude. I like to stay in the middle someplace, doing scans a couple of times a month but more if I feel I have been places that might not be so user friendly. I never use peer to peer sites, I feel those can be very dangerous places to go plus they have precious little I might need.

Hey...sometimes it is just the tiniest things that help so much.

Iris are pretty tough. After they start to take hold, I don't water any, and make them fend for themselves...way too many other things that need my attention/water.

the easiest way to have Avast do your scans is to set up their screensaver scan that way anytime your pc goes to screen saver Avast kicks in and starts doing a scan of your pc. It starts over from where it left off the last time too so that is good. There is an option to turn off loop back which has it start all over again as soon as it finishes.
On the Avast download page on the left there is a link to their user manual in there are full instructions on how to set up the screensaver virus scan. You can also set it up to do scans through your Windows task manager. Those directions are here on this bleeping computer tutorial.
