MSE turned off

I've been having trouble with my Verizon email, I called and they said the problem is on their side, should be fixed by tomorrow morning. Great.

Before calling and finding out it was their problem, I ran Malwarebytes, came out fine, and then ran MSE. It didn't find any problems either. After the scan was finished this page came up.......When I click on "Turn On" it just spins for several minutes, then tells me it can't be turned on because the function timed out.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to turn it on?

Restart the computer gets it running ??

I had that problem happening frequently. On my win8.1 - it was a recent new version 7 of EaseUs Todo back up program was the cause. I finally uninstalled easeus. Havent had windows defender freeze since. Which is what MSE is called on win8 .

Experiment with pausing ease us ? or if you don't have that, program, maybe try uninstalling MSE and after a restart, re-install it.

MSE has a timer on it,, if it stops, its supposed to try to restart in 60 seconds, maybe after 3 tries it gives up until you restart the computer.

Some people would consider that a "feature". It is on some induction tops. When you take the pot of, it quits sensing anything there and turns off. Think of yours as an unintended safety feature.

Hi, Thanks for the responses ! :-) First, my apologies. I'm very neuro-flatulent today. ;-) I need to make two corrections. She uses Avira not Avast. (She had been using Avast and that was causing some trouble, as other users of those two programs noted.) Avira has been working quite well so far. I think my main issue (and my second correction) is the 'nag factor' associated with Online Armor. (I'm afraid my word "conflict" was a case of me accidentally typing the word that was in the back of my mind thinking about the issues mentioned above between Avast (her former AV) and OA. Sorry for the confusion.... :-( ) Anyway, OA constantly asks me to allow/block things when I'm doing updates, scans, etc. Even when I tick the "trust this program" box I still get asked repeatedly to give my permission for things. It's just the inconvenience of it all. And I assume that 'nag factor' would still be there if I replaced Avira with MSE, so I'd gain nothing. (And as far as third-party firewalls go, I do like OA for her XP computer because it seems to pass leak tests better, in my limited experience. So, until MSE comes out with a FW as part of the software (the two-way kind) -- or until my aunt upgrades to something like Windows 7 that has a better FW -- I guess she may as well stay put with Avira and OA.) Also, my aunt does have Spywarblaster, so she's covered there. :-)

LOL, I know THAT kind of bungalow. The problem seems to have corrected itself. The red shield is no longer there. I wonder if takes until the next scheduled scan, or something, until they are in sync. I'll try to pay close attention next time. nearandwest, I'm not sure when I last ran a full scan. Maybe I'll do that tonight.

Ac turns off after prolonged use and won't turn back on.

You may be able to do some quick fixes by yourself. This could have to do with improperly cleaned coils, clogged air filter or anything that causes your air conditioner to overheat. Yes, you may still need a pro but we had the same problem and got ours to start running again by following some simple steps. See link below. If that doesn't work, ask again because I know some professional steps you can take. Also, VERY IMPORTANT. Turn off the power to your air conditioner before using any metal tools to mess with it. You can do that at your circuit breaker, as long as you know which one has power to your air conditioner. Here is a link that might be useful: Air conditioner won't work

o.k. so I clicked on the updates that were available, then restarted the computer and tadaaa, MSE is lit up green!

On your W8 doesn't your AV disable WD protection? In my case AVG does.

I don't use any other AV. Windows Defender only.
Have been running the malwarebytes Anti-Exploit? it only uses about 4mb and wow is it busy if you watch process monitor for something, its as busy as a full av program.

Supposedly, the combination of win8.1 with IE11 & Windows Defender is as safe as one can expect to be - (Microsoft's testings).

I'm one of the majority that actually like IE I guess. And don't install the foolbars and other free gifts that come with some program installs.

Thanks. That explains the difference. I was going to check a W8 Avast system tonight just to see. Now I don't have to.
