De Dietrich induction going back - need replacement

We're on our third de Dietrich Cooktop and I think it's going back as well. The left front burner makes the most horrible sound even after it's been off for 5 minutes.

The first one was getting too hot and the second didn't work on the right hand side. Supposedly this was tested in the showroom before being sent so understandable I do not want another.

Please tell me what you have, why you like it, and most importantly, if available, the size of the cutout in the counter.

Which De Dietrich model did you have, and where did you buy it from?

I have a 308X which I bought from Cookpower in New Zealand and it's been working fine so far -- we did the proper ventilation cutouts in the front and the rear to ensure good circulation, and ours is installed above an oven as well.

Interesting! Not sure I understand either reply you've gotten so far. I would be concerned that converting from 240/50Hz to 120/60Hz would be difficult, though I'm not able to really comment. Maybe post on the Electrical forum? My real concern is that I think that hood design will be highly inefficient. This is a hood that sacrifices virtually all performance for style from what I can see. You have a hood that combines about every possible factor to decrease ventilation efficiency: --inadequate depth (won't cover front burners) --a "flat plate" hood with no sides (nothing to contain vapor if there is even a hint of lateral airflow) --the upwards slant (encourages vapor to flow away from the wall, which is the only containment element you have) --excessive height (again, due to the upwards slant, the front of the hood is way too high over the front burners, which are the ones you use the most) --inadequate duct sizing (largest duct it accomodates is 150 mm which is just short of 6'', which is undersized already). Claim is max output of 1000 m3/hr, roughly = 590 cfm, which I find hard to believe through such small ducting) --extremely expensive (you're already at >$1400 based on the UK website, then you have shipping, and the predictably large cost of replacing or converting existing blower motors. By the time you're done, you'll be spending way more than a custom hood built in the US. Net result is that I'd predict that this hood will only remove the smoke/odor/etc that is lucky enough to directly strike the exhaust opening. It has essentially no useful capture area. But...if you're really totally set, why don't you check with a custom builder here in the US? I think both Metallo Arts and Modern Aire could do this, though I know that Jeff Herman at Modern Aire will advise you against it for the reasons I've listed. But, if it really is a case of form trumping function, then they will build it for you.

I just replaced the same two things as you, my pump and my filter. Old filter was a Pentair C&C 240. I replaced it with a Pentair Quad 100DE. The filter is certainly oversized for my pool (about 25000 gallons), but all that means is that it can filter longer before I have to clean it. The filter has been great so far. Zero issues. Pool has been running for 3 months and the pressure has only increased one or two psi. So I'll probably just have to clean it once, at the end of the season. Pump. I recommend you get away from a single speed pump. You don't need high GPM to run your cleaner, so your better bet from the perspective of energy usage would be to use a lower flow pump with an efficient motor. You can go with a 2-speed and run it on low. Or go further. I installed a Pentair Intelliflo VS. About $800. I run it at a lower speed but for longer hours to get the proper turnover. Compared to my old single-speed pump (1-1/2hp Pentair Whisperflo) the new pump has been saving me about $65 per month. I use my pool 8 months out of the year, so the pump will have paid for itself after 1-1/2 seasons of use. So...I do like the Quad DE. And I really like the Pentair VS pump.

For starters, the energy cost for running a stove (or cooktop and ovens) is a tiny part of a household energy budget -- 2.8% is the figure (1.8% being the oven) I've seen tossed around by the Department of Energy and others. For an idea of how trivial the difference will be, go to Michael Bluejay's website and use his "Mr. Electricity" calculator. http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/cooking.html Somewhere down the page, he says to figure induction efficiencies by reducing the electric stove cost by 40%. The calculator asks for input of your local rates and how much you use the oven and each burner and how many days per week. When I ran the numbers for my kitchen, figuring in all the cooking I do, I found the cost differential for an induction range was about 70 cents more per month for induction over natural gas cooking appliances. Obviously, YMMV. Somebody in an area with high marginal electric rates --- say, $0.40/kWh --- would see more substantial savings with a gas appliance. Three-phase 240 from the breaker -- are you talking three conductor cable from the breaker or an actual three phase 240v line? From what I recall of the importing-induction threads here (gosh, was it a decade ago, already?), I thought the DeDietrich induction cooktops ran on single phase power. To me, three-phase 240v would be a commercial setup. (Cooktek and Garland make several of big induction appliances including rangetops with six 3500w burners. A "mere" $8k for that rangetop!) Upgrading a residential electrical service to a commercial 240v (or 400v) three-phase service would require a new transformer, a new service line to the house, and a whole-new breaker panel. Good point to talk about relative values. However, it seems to me that a failed controller board or boards (apparently costing $800 and maybe $1400 to have replaced) is more akin to having a blown motor in a car, or maybe major damage from hitting a deer where your insurance company wants to total the vehicle. Those are much bigger financial hits, ones that as Lily'smom says, were you get to "the thought process when deciding to replace a car." Now if we were talking about, say, a Miele induction range priced at $7k ($7500 with the 5 year warranty), it makes arguable economic sense to go ahead with an $800 or even a $1400 repair. A six year old Miele range, with a $1500 repair, might very well be worth around $3000 to $4000. For a six year-old Elux, though, it is a good deal less clear, which is where cjzimmer seems to be asking for help. Here's my 2 cents on the questions asked. Sounds to me like the stove is the EW30IS65 slide-in model. At least, that was the only induction range that I recall Elux selling as a two-oven induction range back in 2011. (IIRC, it had the regular oven and the "baking drawer" in place of a warming drawer and that was how Elux could call it a "two oven" stove.) If memory serves, the stove was priced at around $3200 back in 2011. What's it worth now? Maybe $1600? Maybe a lot less. Seems to me that we had a posting here a couple of years ago from somebody who picked up one from Craig's list for about $1000. On the other hand, if you were going to buy the current version Elux slide-in (EW30IS80), the asking price is usually $3200 but sometimes turns up on sale at around $2900. Compared to that price, an $800 or even $1400 repair looks more economically rational. Trouble is that this is the point where we run into a lot of uncertainty. As Lily'smom points out, maybe other components will start failing. Then again, maybe they will not. Conversely, do I want to spend $2900 on a new stove that also might have a major failure in another six years? Or, to borrow Kaseki's formulation -- would you be willing to pay $450 per year to lease a stove and then go lease a new one when it dies? Another alternative would be a less expensive replacement range. Two examples that come to mind are the Elux freestanding that Lily'smom is getting (also recently purchased, I believe by 3katz4me). Seems to run around $1800. That, of course, is a frestanding range and might not be to cjzimmer's liking. So, for a slide-in, there also is the Frigidaire induction slide-in range (FGIS3065). Made (afaik) in the same factory which produces the Electrolux ranges. The Frigidaire slide-in often seems to be sale priced at under $1500. Otherwise, the next least expensive slide-in induction models are the GE (PHS920) and the two Samsung slide-in induction ranges, all seemingly priced around $2200 to $2500. Will these ranges --- or the $3+k Bosch slide-in (HIIP054U, soon to be replaced by the HIIP055u), the $3k JennAir/Kittchenaid cloned slide-ins, and the new LG induction slide-in --- be more reliable, longer lived than the Elux/Frigidaire products? No way to know. We know that some of them will fail early (plenty of online complaints about that, too). But what percentages? Impossible for us to say because there is (as yet) no readily available -- available to us, that is --- long term statistical data. So, "in your shoes," my inclination would be to go with a less expensive model from a reputable retailer and read the extended warranty terms very carefully.

What are these? Ours is installed above a shallow 4" deep drawer. There is no obstruction to the the fans or intake vents.

We just came back from a quick trip to a different local appliance store that has the Diva on the floor. The salesman was an idiot - need I say more. I've forgotten more than he knows just from the research I did here and at the Induction site. The de Dietrich definitely cooks faster and dh likes the H warning for hot plates, too, which the Diva on the floor didn't have. The salesman tried to talk us into an Electrolux but couldn't tell us why that one other than price. We had to pull teeth to get him to look up the Viking and Wolf models.

I walked out and told dh I just had a bad feeling about the place.

I did write the GW website on a slip of paper and pass it on to someone else looking at appliances who I felt was getting a load of BS, though, so the trip wasn't all together unsuccessful LOL.

There may be no obstruction but if the cabinet is a sealed box ... In other words is there a hole/vent/whatever in the cabinet to allow air to come in? And somewhere for the warm/hot air to go to? (I have a Fagor over a F&P oven. A hole was cut in the cabinet side to a 3" filler which is open above the toekick. The Fagor vents out above the countertop at the back of the unit.)

We have a 30' Windcrest Induction over a F&P 30' wall oven. My DH also drilled extra holes into the adjoining cabinets to allow for additional ventilation.

This was not specified anywhere in the installation instructions, however we decided it couldn't hurt to have extra ventilation and it was no trouble to drill the holes.

We've only had our combo installed two days but I'm very pleased with both units so far.

There is a quiet clicking noise with the Windcrest as the pan heats but no other humming or anything. The fan is very quiet.

The cutout for the 30' model is 29 3/8 x 19 3/4.
The 36' model needs 35 3/8 x 19 3/4. Both require 2 5/8' below.

I believe the ventillation cutouts to be more critical when the cooktop is installed over an oven, but the instructions in the De Dietrich manual were very clear about where to put the holes, how large, etc.

I'm reviving this post to see what you've settled on.

My Dedietrich 308x has also developed a noisy habit. One of the fans sounds like a prop plane heard from a distance. We purchased the unit from Cookpower in New Zealand. It has worked great for more than one year, but this noise is scaring me.

Does yours make a similar noise?

piegirltoo, you should have a two or three year parts warranty on that cook top from Cookpower/Prestige Appliance. Give Prestige a call, as I'm not sure if Dennis is still with them, and ask them to send you out a replacement fan. That should probably do the trick!

We're one year on our De Dietrich 308X, also purchased from Cookpower, and so far it's working well. I've got my fingers crossed for years of happy, unfettered use!

Ooh, sorry to hear about your noisy cooktop-- sounds dreadful.

We have the Brandt from Cookpower and have been only happy with it. My understanding from Dennis is that Brandt, Diva and de Dietrich are all the same units, rebadged by different companies, so that may not help you.

We sure love this cooktop. It's been installed in 2 homes and shipped from afar, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised it's making noise. (It still works though!)
