Problem with HP printer

I have an HP C4250 multifunction (print/scan/copy) printer that is acting up. It's about 3 years old and is not heavily used. A week or so ago it started printing pages with irregular line spacing: the text is sharp but the lines sometimes overlap one another. I suspect something may be wrong with the feed mechanism so that the printer does not advance the page properly. I've pulled the back off and see no jams or obvious problems with the rollers or with gunk on them. The ones I can reach with a ruler seem to roll freely. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the software and drivers. It's been a good printer, but I don't intend to take it in for repairs as it only cost $90 new. I'm fairly mechanical and am wondering whether there is something fixable here, or whether I should just give up on it and buy a new one..
