I have a Dell Desktop (XP Home Edition) I.E. 8.0 and a Dell Inspiron 1525 Lap top (Vista)..I.E 8.0. Linksys Router...

This is my problem I could play a Word Challenge Game on my Desktop Computer upstairs but when I try to play the same Game on my Laptop downstairs it will not open. The screen goes black...What is my problem? I have the uptodate Flash Player on both computers . Any advice out there from my Computer Forum friends? Thank you...

Try using a different browser and see if it will open on your laptop.

Could it be because my laptop is wireless but my Desktop is hard wired.

grandms....I really don't want to try a new browser....I like Internet Explorer....and prefer not to change...I am chicken....thanks for your input...

I hope you're able to get your PC cleaned up. If this is an instance of the installation of unwanted items and that's happened before, that might suggest that your security software isn't doing its job. And/or that your internet use habits need to be reviewed a bit. Once you get things back to normal, if you're not using one already, you might consider using a well rated security system. When you use a comprehensive program, utilities like Win Patrol become unnecessary. Attached as information for other readers is a link with trusted ratings of available programs. The not-free versions tend to be more comprehensive. The better rated free ones are capable but many have fewer features. Getting a multi-user license you share within your family or friends can reduce the cost. Also, many internet providers provide top rated products for free to subscribers. A text file is a text file (letters and numbers). A jpg is a type of image file and it can't be converted to a text file without being processed by some kind of character recognition software. Some types of"text" files, like MS Word and equivalents, allow you to imbed an image in the middle of text but it remains an image. Like a photo or drawing. If your niece sent you scans or photos of text on a page, you need to read by using a photo or other image viewing software. Good luck.

No you are not infected. Somehow you simply opened the log. It's just a file that logs the activity of background processes that keep your system running. It is helpful to tech support to access this list if your computer should develop a problem. Basically it's the entire history of your system. You can clean up the useless files but it basically a system that allows one to troubleshoot.

I understand you don't want to use another browser. You don't HAVE TO. I understand you like Internet Explorer but sometimes, the process of finding out out whether or not Internet Explorer has a problem is to TRY ANOTHER BROWSER. You don't have to use the other browser if you don't want to but refusing to try one is going to make it just that much more difficult to determine where the problem really lies. By the way, if one day Internet Explorer does have a real problem that prevents it from working, how are you going to get onto the Internet?

azinoh....I have had many computers over the past ten years and always used Internet Explorer as a browser with no problems.....I am not a computer expert that is for sure.

I am having a problem with my granddaughter's website....Webkinz.....she could play all the other games on Webkinz, but not the Word Challenge.....It says Internet Explorer is not responding..and then goes black......this only happens on my laptop.

It is no big thing believe me...I was just curious to why she could play on my desktop but not on my laptop.

I thought it was the router...maybe it is the browser. Plus I did not want it to harm my laptop...and thought my Computer Forum friends would have an answer.

Thank you anyway. She will have to play on my desktop. Period ...the end.

I also encourage you to consider another browser in addition to your IE. If you ever have a major crash as I have had, you will thank your lucky stars that you have another browser to get to the web.

I have FireFox and IE, I never use IE, but it's there if I need it, kind of like a back-up safty net. [pardon the pun] ;)

Try using the Word Challenge game in No Add / Ons mode.

Here's how to put Internet Explorer in no add / ons mode

Click > Start > Programs. In the list click Accessories when that opens click System tools in there select IE No add /ons. Once that is done visit the word challenge again and see if that helps. If it does that would indicate a add on conflict is present.

I assume your desktop computer is wired to the router? If so then carry the laptop upstairs, remove the CAT5 cable from the desktop and connect it to the laptop and try getting online. Perhaps your wireless signal is not getting downstairs where you have the laptop

We have given you a number of suggestions. It is up to you to be willing to at least try one or more of them. There's no magic involved.

That's where you need to disable 1 add / on at a time to find out exactly the one causing the problem. To proceed: In your Internet Explorer browser at the very top click on Tools in there you will see the option to Manage Add /ons you will also notice you have the ability to disable them just click on Disable. Start with the first one work your way down. Disable it close Internet explorer re-open Internet explorer and go to the problem Webkins thing. Keep doing that until you find the culprit. Once you find the culprit keep it disabled for now.

Please consider the excellent advice here about downloading and installing another browser like firefox, you don't have to ever use it if you like IE that is fine, but if you have a failure in IE which does happen then you would at least have a method to get online and ask for help.(You have been very lucky so far not to have any IE failures!)
It is just one more way to stay safe and secure, just like you have more than one security program for a layered protection having an extra browser is for your safety too.
