You beat me to it, LindaC, I just saw the Yahoo story about the East Coast blizzard and all those cancelled flight, traffic jams, stalled trains. I was just chatting with a friend in NYC a couple of weeks ago and she was kind of complaining that there was no snow. So, she sure has some now!

I hope everyone is safe and warm, that your lights are on and your pantry is stocked and that you don't have anywhere you need to go.

Stay safe, stay warm, stay home. Oh, and hire some neighbor kid to shovel, my doc says it's bad for people "my age", especially when you are talking about feet and not inches!

In the Mid-Atlantic here and have about 18" and the wind is whipping up some big drifts. We are under a State of Emergency and I am waiting for my son-in-law to get plowed out so he can dig me out. With my Raynaud's issue, shoveling snow in this wind is not going to happen. I was lucky to be off yesterday but was supposed to work today. My boss is trying to go into the store and she lives just south of me and said for me to stay home. She is driving on the north lane of a 4-lane highway that hasn't been plowed yet! At least I didn't lost trees in this storm like I did in the Feb. one. I have yummy Christmas left-overs and still have power so I am warm. But I ate all of the pumpkin pie so I think I need to bake cookies.
I am so ready for spring!

Here in eastern Massachusetts, we've escaped any significant difficulties. We are not in a flood zone at all and most trees around our property are not in a position to damage the house, maybe the garage, but just a small branch down near the back lot line so far. We are staying in and being productive which has been pleasant. I actually was hoping for more rain than we got. I think I might have gotten 3 or 4 inches only. The local ponds were looking a little low the other day and I have shrubs in the yard that have browned leaves, so the rain has been welcome. Hoping that others have fared as well. Trudi, the only tree that ever came down in our neighborhood in 30 years here, was a willow tree. I've always heard they come down easily. At least they weren't large enough to fall on your house. I imagine you are already thinking about what you are going to plant. :-)

To hogan_nj and anyone else in our climate zone; Water in our area, with a mesh cover may form algae if the pool was closed with some mesh covers early in the closing season without having had a chance to cool below 60 degrees. This normally means a mid to late October time frame. Pool water has a tough time growing algae below this temp. In the Spring, the water temp will start to rise. Some people add a 2.5 gallon carboy container of liquid chlorine and a pint of Algaecide 60 for a fiberglass pool. Use a pump to distribute/circulate the water when adding. Do it again in two weeks starting this weekend and in two weeks, do it again. That should take you to opening season. If you open later, do it weekly till opening minus the algaecide. Using liquid chlorine is important. Powdered shocks don't dissolve easily in cold water. The liquid is already liquid. Larger pools should use a 5 gallon carboy and a full quart of 60. If you close the pool before the water has cooled, this procedure should be used also. If you want, you can substitute the liquid chlorine from a pool store with unscented bleach but double the amount since it's only 1/2 the strength. Make sure its plain unscented bleach! It usually prevents the algae or at least kills it. Treat for phosphates as decomposing algae may release them into your water as food for the next generation and vacuum to waste before adding balancing chems. This will make the initial cleanings much easier and faster for you. Scott

After the storm, if you're without power... 1. Pick out as much debris as you can. 2. Add bleach daily and swish it around with your brush. We were without power for 9 days after Ike. I worked on the pool for a while every one of those days...pulling branches, scooping leaves, etc. I added a gallon of Clorox a day, and used my brush to stir the water and make sure it was spread throughout the pool. The water color looked OK, but the pool was very cloudy after the storm, and it stayed that way the whole time we were without power. Our power came back on at about 5:30 on a Sunday night. One of the first things I did was turn on the pump. By the time I got up Monday morning the pool was completely clear.

I have a good analogy for suckers and any new growth: They are like children born to a farmer family (in old time) who can use extra hands helping in farming. BUT then the children have to be provided for , fed, and cared for ... for a while before they can help the farmer in the field. That is how suckers are : Initially and for a good while they will just use plants resources to grow to maturity and then start making some contribution, while at the same time using some of the resources. And that is just in photosynthesis. I believe there is a limit as how many square foot of leaf surface that a plant needs. It is like having a solar hot water panel. How much hot water a family needs and how many solar panels should be installed ? Definitely with more than 8 hours of direct sun ( plus more indirect ) , plants cannot use more than all of that in long hot summer days. Some leaves that never get direct sun, make very little or no contribution to photosynthesis. If you don't prune them the plant will abort them one by one. Why not do it sooner yourself ? Sey

Hard to tell with the wind blowing the snow but where there is no drifting with have a 19 inch stone wall and can't see it. So I am thinking at least 19 inches. No power outage in our area yet though if it goes we have a generator.

We were just discussing the plight of those stuck at airports...babies, diapers, formula, no money to eat at the concessions, pets at home, occupying the kids, sleeping, backup flight arrangements, dead cell phone batteries, medication that is in checked luggage. The implications are endless. My heart breaks for those folks.

I'm in North Central Jersey and thankfully have not lost power. The wind has been howling since noon yesterday and the snow has piled high. It's hard to tell because of the drifts but we definitely have over two feet here. I couldn't get out of my back door this morning as the snow had piled against it. Local news is reporting up to 30 inches in the surrounding areas. But roads are now plowed and we're all thankful that schools were already scheduled to be closed for the holidays. We're used to good size storms in this area but this one has been different because of the wind. Thank goodness for snow blowers!! Spent the morning digging out our looooong driveway and our elderly neighbors' property. Have curled up on the couch knitting this afternoon after a hot shower....

Just outside of Philadelphia and we got about 10". It's hard to say because of the drifting. In some places the wind blew the snow completely away but created two foot high drifts elsewhere. I shoveled my entire driveway and front walk. Oy. The front walk immediately drifted over, so I guess I'll do it again tomorrow.

The roads are okay, with icy patches tonight. Next weekend we're supposed to get highs in the upper 40's and showers, so get ready for wet basements!

Those farther north got far more than we did, although our airport was closed and the Eagles game was postponed.

I just saw NYC on the news this morning (I don't watch news regularly) and saw how bad it was there, with even the subways closed. The sales people in our NY showroom in the D&D Building did show up but had plenty of complaints and recommended closing the showroom for the day. I think they said they didn't have any heat, and I don't know whether that has been fixed or not. I cannot imagine anyone shopping in that weather.

Yikes. The east coast gets hit so much harder than we do in SoCal. A few inches of rain last week made headlines and a forum thread, but our airports and infrastructure weren't affected, and not many people were stranded. I'm sending hot chocolate and chicken soup!

Wow - we got slammed. I just was out making my driveway a little wider. Lucky that I have this week off - but our offices in CT, RI, NY and NJ were closed on Monday. Whew! -maria

Hi Maria! Nice to see you posting again. I know you're close to us. We got hit pretty hard too. It wasn't so much the snow although that contributed to the problems. It was the wind & storm surge that was a bit unnerving. The storm surge from LIS mixed with the snow & made a real mess. The wind howled & blew salt water spray right over the roof. Today is really the first day since the blizzard that the wind's settled down.

maria, I hope you're all shovelled out now. Here it's 39F and raining and it's supposed to be nearly 50 tomorrow, so very weird. And we had an earthquake. Well, Indiana did, but it was felt as far north as Grand Rapids, which is about 50 miles from me. Elery is in southern Michigan, so he got shaken up a bit, LOL, but no damage.

It'll be fine unless it gets cold fast and freezes, then we'll have a heckuva mess, but there won't be any snow, it'll all be melted!

Gorgeous sunny day here in Philadelphia today. Even the snow on my unshoveled sidewalks is melting. I'd love to go out for a walk but it's the kind of day where cars send up big whooshes of muddy melted snow as they pass by.

Tomorrow is supposed to be even warmer. Annie's right -- I hope we don't have a big melt then freeze, which turns everything into a skating rink.
