Scheduled Updates that I didn't schedule . . .

I'm doing some clean up on my PC.

In Scheduled Tasks under Performance and Maintenance I found these two items. (The only thing I have scheduled is AVG, which is not listed there.)

1. Apple software update, scheduled to run every Wednesday.

2. Update for Ask Toolbar, scheduled to run every day.

I don't have any Apple software that I know of.

I don't have Ask Toolbar that I know of. It is not in my FF add ons.

I don't see either of those in Task Manager, but it seems I do hear something running from time to time and don't know what it is. I do see Apple Mobile Device in Task Manager. I don't have an iPhone, iPod touch, iPads, etc.

I have googled re removing Apple software and Ask toolbar. Some references seem touchy.

What is the best way to remove, delete, uninstall, and stop these from running?

HP Media Center XPSP3 FF default browser.

I would follow these directions, the ask bar is a pain to remove and even find out where is is sometimes. The apple up date may be included with Quick time, another difficult on to track down. Look in the Program file folders for any Quick time, Apple, ipod etc.

Zep, Nothing in Add/Remove like Ask. There is 1 click answers. Could that be it?

In Add/Remove I have Quick Time, Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Software Update. I'm thinking I could remove those 2, should I remove Quick Time also?

Well, the next time you pass by a citrus grove, stop and ask them; farmers are usually willing to share what they know. Aside from that, in a "normal" climate a mature producing Meyer (don't know about the others, as most people here know I am a one trick pony) needs 5 liters of water per day per tree. I would guess, that, even with your high evapotranspiration rate, with those size emitters you are probably overwatering at 3 hours. I would try 1 hour 3 times per week and watch your trees for signs of wilt (leaf curl is the best indicator. A little wilt is not a bad thing; it is what most commercial growers use as a gauge for when to water; of course the best growers have tensiometers in the soil that tell the computers when to turn on the water. If you do start getting wilt, you can either increase the time a bit or add another day.

Well I just called my local PO and they gave me a number for Consumer Affairs for this region. They said I'd have to leave a message, but that 'someone' would call me back. On a hunch I just tried calling the 1-800-ASK-USPS number and after answering 7 questions with the voice response recorder, (what a waste of time) was told that I needed to speak to an agent and that the office was closed. They then gave me the hours that agents are available. Ok, so I just call called the # I was given for the Regional Consumer Affairs office and got a fast busy signal on it. I called my local PO back, and this time they looked the number up and found that the number they gave me was wrong, and now they no longer have a toll free number...sigh. I just called and left a message with Consumer Affairs asking that someone call me back. And so the saga continues. Nothing should be this frustrating. After 5 phone calls I am now waiting for someone to return my call. Anyone want to place bets on whether or not they call me? Any bets on how long it will be before someone calls? I'm betting it will be tomorrow or Friday. Any bets on whether or not they can actually walk me through the pick-up scheduling process and see just why their system won't let me 'zero out' the quantity box for the number of boxes to be picked up? ie why I can't schedule it for 1 box as opposed to 10 boxes, or for 4 boxes as opposed to 40 boxes. grrrr.......

not if you want to be able to view quick time files, unless you have another program on the pc that can open and play quick time files.

one click answers is part of answers.com which also has a toolbar. Do you use one click answers?

it also comes as an add on for firefox

the ask toolbar comes with a lot of stuff now days, you have to really watch closely when doing any install to make sure it is not included and uncheck any of those extras during the install process. So you could have got it with a number of updates or installs. It is usually in the add remove list though.

Guess I didn't know what Quick Time was.

I don't use 1-Click Answers. I have AltClick on any word, which I remember using once just to see if it works. I use the Google search box up in the right hand corner on FF when I want to know something.

I guess I will just leave everything the way it is, but I don't like hearing that running sound. I also don't like it when "they" put stuff on my machine that I didn't ask for. I suppose that is par for the course though. :(

BTW, if those things are running, why doesn't it show in Task Manager?

They might show as applications (Not sure though) in the Task manager. Do you have that tab?

Should I leave, or remove, any of those?

ituneshelper.exe is a process belonging to Itunes MP3 streaming tool by Apple, which allows you to play MP3's. This process speeds up iTunes when it starts, and the program also monitors for connected iPod devices. This is a non-essential process. \r Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference.\r

Zep, in Add/Remove I removed 1-Clickanswers and that removed the others in one fell swoop.

I also did the StartupLite.

I don't really have a problem with slow start up, just don't like the loud running noise.

Thanks to RC and Zep again. I count on CompHelp to keep my PC on track.

the loud running noise could well be a fan that kicks in at times of need, many computers have those, they kick in when the processor is working or anything is going on that needs extra cooling so hearing it is a good thing actually.

you should not hear your hard drive if you hear your hard drive making a lot of noise that can be a problem.

RC, that is what the noise is, I guess. I know dust bunnies can cause problems, but I have the case opened and cleaned quite often. I can't do it, but I have adult grandsons who do it for me. Those guys do eat a lot, but they come in handy sometimes!
