Question about Gas Cooktop

I am going to have a gas line run to my electric cooktop area so I can get a gas one. The countertop is granite and the current cutout where the electric cooktop is as follows

29 3/8" x 20 1/2 "

I am looking at the install instruction from

The 30" cooktop shows a cutout of

28 1'2" x 19 15/16"

is this going to be a problem? Are those minimum dimensions on the install page?

Does anyone have any opinions on a good cooktop in the 500-800 dollar range...I like the Caldera 30" but i do not want stainless steel, I want black.

bigjim: I'll preface this with the caveat that my only experience is with the installation of our Kitchenaid gas-on-glass cooktop, about 5 years ago. Your existing cutout is a little bigger than the specs for the Maytag that you're looking at. This may or may not be a problem. Of course there is some overlap provided by the actual dimensions of the finished cooktop. It would be best if you could take an actual measurement of the cooktop that you're considering, to make sure that it will even cover the hole. You may also want to contact customer service at Maytag about the installation. I don't know if there would be a support issue if you use a slightly larger cutout. Also make sure you have enough clearance below the cooktop, especially in the area of the gas regulator. I had to cut out a piece of cabinet sidewall (not visible) to accomodate mine. Otherwise, there was room to put a regular drawer below it. We are happy with our Kitchenaid cooktop. It's a 30" 4 burner, with a grate in the back (false burner, whatever) that comes in handy. You must keep up with cleaning the glass in order for it to look good. We really didn't keep up with it all that well in the past few years, and my wife thought there were permanent areas on the glass that were damaged. After I took acetone and 0000 steel wool to it, it looks 99% better. These are not recommended cleaning items for the glass, but you do what you have to do (YMMV). If I'd been willing to spend maybe 30 min. more on it, I could have probably gotten 99.9% of the stuff off. All of our igniters are still working, and we really have no complaints about this one. I think a similar model would still be your price range, but I haven't checked. Steve

Thanks Steve, I cannot find any cooktops that fit the exact size of the cutout we have...Hopefully I can find something because the electric coil cooktop is terrible.

I appreciate all the replies on this thread. I liked the Viking 'designer' line gas cooktop, but it's performance specs are not as good as DCS or Monogram. Oddly the specs on their "professional" cooktop weren't any better. I want power and simmer. The dual burners on the DCS and Monogram seem to offer that the best. Also their burners have cast brass instead of steel. Even the pricey Thermador doesn't use brass, and it 'clicks' the burner on and off to maintain a simmer. So now it's down to choosing DCS or Monogram based on their layout, reliability and customer service. This is where I really reply on the postings here. I'll take some of my big pots to the good store next week and verify I can use them with both. I'm going to have double ovens installed next to the cooktop. I want big drawers beneath it. I'm planning on the Electrolux (not ICON) ovens because they have the best mix of features I really want, and I like its styling better than Monogram. I also looked at Viking "Designer" ovens and a Bosch. I really like them for their looks and using knobs instead of an electronic interface. They have the features and power that I want, but I'm too concerned about reliability. I haven't heard ANY complaints from the owners of Electrolux ovens! So I chose better reliability over knobs. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm still in "planning" phase with my remodel. Tear out begins in a week. It will be about 8 weeks (I hope) before I installed mew equipment and test it out.

I would observe all clearances that the manufacturer recommends - it's really a fire safety issue - you don't want your kitchen catching fire.

Hi DMack108, I'm hoping you see this! I noticed you had an issue with installing an Electrolux oven under a Wolf gas cooktop. I'm looking to do the same thing, although my oven will not be the Icon. Did you ever resolve this, and how did you resolve it? You were considering installing the oven to the left of the cooktop. I assume you installed it under the cooktop? Where did you place your gas shutoff? How is it working - do you like it? Thanks!

Anne, I saw your previous but didn't answer because I don't know much about the hybrid units except that they're mostly designed for difficult places to live where both the electricity and gas delivery are iffy. You're in a similar situation with the electricity, of course, though your propane deliveries are probably pretty reliable. You can light most gas cooktops with a match or lighter (a pistol style lighter, or any kind with a long nose, is a safer choice). I have 24" (Gaggenau) induction, which has a similar configuration to the Wolf, and the 15" Wolf 2 burner gas under a 48" hood. There's about 4" between the two. Big enough for a spoon rest and the pepper grinder. You could certainly make it wider. You'd have to ask Wolf how close together they could be. Modular cooktops usually only need about an inch because they have a piece that links them together. I don't know if it would work with the 24" induction, though. It may require a more secure side brace. It's worth making sure that it's secure enough to handle big heavy pots. I like my Wolf gas cooktop. It has a medium and a small burner. I find them adequate. But I have the induction for more high powered cooking. I mostly use the induction. There are a few things I prefer gas for, and I use it when I need more burners. When we have had power outages, they've been local (less than 1000 houses), so it has been wiser to go hang out where there's power, a few miles away, than open the fridge and letting out the cold air. The food is good for at least a day if you don't open the fridge. I did light it once with a lighter, though I forget why. Maybe it was an outage. Perhaps we were making tea. I wouldn't want to do all my cooking on it. It's a small space. But for a few days here and there, and for meals rather than artistic expression (i.e., stew not crepes), it should be fine. It's a heck of a lot better than a camp stove!

bigjim, Looks like the Miele KM346 should fit the hole you've got. Unfortunately, they don't provide a range of numbers just a single number but it looks like the front-to-back number is 20 3/8" which is very close to yours. The side-to-side is 28 3/8 but the cooktop is 30" wide fully so your 29 3/8 should be fine.

Otherwise, you could use this opportunity to go to a 36" unit if it will fit in the cabinet that you have beneath it. You'll only have to enlarge the cutout. :-)
