I am using foxfire. After logging on, if I "hover" my curser over the FF icon in my task bar I will see the outline of another web site- if I click on it ,it is a promo. for a TV show. When I am on a web site (like this) If my sound is on, I hear the sound of the promo., even if I haven't "clicked" n it. I have AD Block- what is causing this? TIA Pam
sushipup,- What is "Easy List" ? Right now the background site ( with FF logo in the corner) is a promo. for CBS programs. If I click on it it will open and I can then close the promo and it disappears, However, if I don't click to open (leave the shadow of the web site behind the FF icon in the task bar ) and then close this web site- as expected FF closes, but this promo is now open. ( with the FF logo)
easy list is not associated with add ons or extensions in Firefox. I was asking the user to check add ons for anything odd that might be causing the issue they are experiencing.
If however you want to see if you have it, open Firefox tools, then click addblock in the list click "Filter preferences"
I google "The original easy list" when I need it. I also use the privacy list. You use it with ad block plus, I don't know if you can use it with just adblock.
2. I noticed something strange in my browser line. when I log on FF I have "mysearchdial.com". I used IE to search and found that this is a hijacker; there seems to be several sites offering removal- I'm sure they are NOT free.
It appears that I may have downloaded this when I downloaded another program, I try to always do a custom download, but must have slipped up somewhere. I removed the few things I have added recently. the MSD is still there.
I ran Superantimalware then deleted and reinstalled FF and this Mysearhdial was still there, (even after rebooting)
I then restored FF to its default state and that removed MSD. Now I shall wait and see if the original problem that I asked about ( the "ghost program" running in the background) shows up. Pam
Zep- I did check the Ad/remove programs list and it wasn't listed, that is why I removed the few recently added items- thinking that might take care of it. It turns out this wasn't necessary as resetting FF to it's default status seems to have worked. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thank you for your help. Pam
Download the adwcleaner from the link above in my post above this one. Do a scan. Can you post the scan report here, just copy an paste it to the forum.
I was searching the net for complaints about Cnet and found one of their forums with people complaining about them slipping stuff in with no warning. Wajam was one of the things they was on one posters PC. I had it on my new lap top after downloading something from there. I think that is where I got the trojan.agent/gen-downloader and the tool bar. That's getting pretty bad. I was watching to make sure that didn't happen.
Plantbug is it possible that the black box you see is the Command prompt window? Perhaps 6 inches by three give or take a yard or so? Is there any writing in the box?

Cnet. I read long ago that Cnet is more concerned with money than an honest opinion of a given download. I like MajorGeeks or Filehippo myself.
@plantbug, Your mentioning of Wajam makes me think that Zeb is correct and you have downloaded something other than adwcleaner .
You might go to your Ad/Remove programs and remove anything that shows up as being installed on the date you attempted to install the program.
Run Superantimalware to clean up any odds and ends, then go to the site Zeb mentioned- and download adwcleaner again. MY personal preference (with any download) is to Save the program to my Download file ( Win7) then to go to the DL file and check it with Mic. Security essentials- takes 2 seconds and then run the program. Adwcleaner - in the download file- has a small icon, looks rather like a bowling ball with spikes.
As I mentioned, restoring FF to its default state did take care of my problem, but I ran Adwcleaner anyway and think it is worth keeping on my PC. Pam
I used the link Zeb offered. The box, I opened just to see what it was. "Advertising Info/toparghehits Mozilla foxfire" and in the middle of the box 'powered by google'.
I have tried to paste a copy of the box and I can't get that to work. Can't get email to work either.
I opened it also and there is a download right in the middle of the screen. I used it on my new W 8 laptop because it got infected setting it up. It found a lot of stuff, but nothing serious that I could see. I guess my clean up worked.
I quit AVG a couple of years ago. I use MS Security Essentials on my W7 and Windows Defender on my W 8.

Zep is adwcleaner something you use routinely or just when you think you have problems?
I would not suggest using it routinely with out some sort of guidance on some of the deletions after the scan, for instance users that use Avira Anti Virus need to uncheck the "ask" deletions that adwcleaner will make, otherwise the Anti Virus program will not function correctly. Avira Anti virus uses the asktool bar for some of it's function.
Thanks Zeb, that is what I wanted to know. As I said I used it on my laptop because of the stuff that got on there when I was setting it up. I wanted to be sure it was all gone. I will certainly be more careful next time and not use cnet. I knew I would have to watch for the checked boxes, but didn't know they would slip stuff in like I saw in the cnet discussions.
When you use junkware removal, does it show you what it is deleting before it deletes. The junk is of course very visible on W 8 so something like junk removal would be nice.
I really like the speed on the W8 laptop. It is almost worth having a W 8 just for speed. My W 7 is the slowest PC at start up I have ever had and I have removed everything in the start up menu except 3 things.
