Anyone else getting a JCPenney popup ad for rings here?

I seldom get pop up ads. But today I've been getting a JC Penney pop up ad for diamond rings every single time I click to open a topic on gardenweb.

Since this is the computer forum most of you probably never get these annoying ads. But I'm hoping you can help me get rid of this one.

It even pops up when I previewed this post.

I did for about 8 times and then it quit right after I sent a message to the forum operator. I didn't think the message had anything to do with it quitting though.

Ok this is freaky. The ads are now gone and I didn't even do anything except type the previous message.

I wonder how that happened? I don't know but I'm happy they're gone.

I made the edits to the host file as noted in a recent post somewhere here, as well as setting my popup blocker to high. It's a little bit of a PITA when I DO want to see a popup (like calculating shipping at eBay), but nothing that I can't just right click and say "Allow from this site, or temporarily" Hope you find a simple solution, too. I like GinGins...sounds like the easiest fix.

Someone posted about it on the free help forum at AVG and they have the same problem in GW's kitchen & bath forum and WeUseCoupons.com also! It's probably site-wide here at GW since I had the same problem in the Vegetables forum this morning. I thought I had it fixed but rebooted and it's back again, even after setting Resident Shield to "Remove all threats automatically." I just now looked and "Remove all threats automatically" was UNCHECKED! It could have reset to the default after the tray icon crashed... maybe. When I clicked the Preview button here to post this, the big virus message box no longer comes up but a smaller sliding box comes up near the tray (clock) saying "Threat Removed" and the details and then the box slides back down & disappears. This is the most unobtrusive setting to still be able to read messages and post here for now until "something gives" (or someone!)

To those using Firefox, go to Tools (located on the Firefox toolbar) then click on Options. Open the Content Tab; the first box will say "Block pop-up windows". Make sure the box is checked. I use Firefox with Adblock Plus (and have the "block" box checked!); I never see ads. I understand the need for advertising but I only have basic DSL (all I can get in my area; until 3 months ago I was on dial-up) and only have so much time on the computer; I refuse to spend my limited online time waiting for ads to load. Hope this helps.

Im not having problems anymore. There was a fake Norton Antivirus shortcut on my desktop and I dont know where that came from. I deleted that last night - so it was either that or something that was on this forum and is now gone.

Out of curiosity, have you visited any sites that sell jewelry lately? With targeted advertising, pop-ups can be matched to your viewing habits. Kind of weird and a bit intrusive but it isn't going away.

To fix your problem, use Firefox and install an add-on called "Ad Block Plus". All those pop-up ads will disappear. Both are free.

I use firefox with ad block plus, you will have to add the easy list subscription to that which is very easy, and I see no ads. Ask if you need help

Mike - I didn't visit any sites this morning other then my email, my bank and two forums here at gardenweb - appliances and figs. I didn't open any other links.

Now I do use Firefox exclusively but I'll have to check to verify Ad Block Plus has been downloaded. I assumed I had it because I so seldom get pop ups - and this one was so odd because it happened every time I opened a new message but it only happened here at the Garden Web for about 10 minutes and then it disappeared.

OK - I'm going to check for Ad Block now.

if you do not have ad block plus you would get it here
Adblock Plus 1.2.2

you must then go to this site and add the easy list subscriptions to it, scroll down the page to the 2 items in the yellow area, on the right you will see where it says add to ABP click that to add it, do that for both of those.
EasyList Subscriptions

you will need to close firefox and restart it to put that into effect, so install adblock plus restart firefox then get the subscriptions restart firefox.

After they disappeared I didn't get around to installing the Adblock.

Well I'm doing it right now because the ads are back - there are at least 3 different ones, all from JCPenney.

Thanks to everyone who gave me their suggestions.

This time I'm installing them. I'm just curious if it's something iVillage is doing or is JC Penney somehow infiltrating my GardenWeb site. I don't get these pop ups anywhere else.

Time to install Adblock. Thanks again.

The JC Penney problem referenced in your message doesn't have anything to do with pop-ups here (and it's three years old). Even then it doesn't sound like much of a widespread problem.

The reality is that advertisers are getting smarter and in forums such as this where "membership" is free, they need to pay the bills.

I never did get a handle on if the pop ups were happening here and only here, I don't see any advertising here. But you're right the link is 3 years old and useless, unless the machine was pulled from a closet!

in answer first firefox is the name and it is a browser has nothing to do with firewalls.

if you use firefox as your BROWSER you can add adblock plus and the subscriptions if you use IE as your browser no you can not.

Another browser with which you can use adblock is Chrome. In addition, I have an addon called AdThwart. I never see ads here.

Its ad space sold by Garden Web. Fortunately, Penny's ad has an "X" box in the upper right corner that works. Click on it to turn the ad off. However, it will re-appear the next time you open a new window in GW. It is irritating but can be handled. Ads pay the bill for this site.

But I do get bent out of shape by the numerous tracking cookies this site plants. My security suite tags these and asks me if I wish to delete. I see 10 to 30 tracking cookies per session.
