Convection/microwave recommendations needed

We are looking for recommendations for a microwave/convection oven. This will be used primarily as our microwave but I want the convection option so that we have a second oven available when needed. We will be purchasing a 36" range - with gas/convection single oven.

The MW/convection oven will be wall mounted - 18" deep cabinet approximately 8" above counter height. Is there such an oven available for that depth of 18"? The reason for 18" depth is because this is adjacent to a single window and I don't want a huge and bulky tower so close to the window.

The other option is put the MW underneath counter height and go with a 24" depth oven - but we do not prefer this as the MW is low and less convenient- need to bend over to remove items etc. The other consideration is the door swing - the door opening downward is preferable to side opening. I know we are limiting our options but we need to start somewhere.

We originally eliminated Advantium as an option (not a true oven) but are open to opinions.

I was shopping for the exact same thing six months ago, have a 36" range and really wanted this to be my "extra oven" in a pinch. I educated myself well in this forum and then made a rash decision based on price, despite all the warnings...and now am paying the "real price" (see the link to my other thread)

What you really need to know is that most microwave/convection ovens are manufactured by just a few companies and then rebranded at different price points. A lot of the "high end" (translate costly) versions are simply rebranded Sharps for instance...a point made many times on this forum.

Anyhow, hope that helps just a little--there are people on this forum with far better knowledge on this subject than me so I'm sure they'll chime in...

Anyone out there who might have opinions on this? We need to make a decision and I need some help. Electrician, cabinet maker, and DH all are waiting on my decision. :)

Do you have a microwave/convection oven? If so, please tell me about it and what you like about it. What are the dimensions and tell me about the placement.

My advice is not to get a built in, but instead put it on a shelf in your cabinetry. That's because unlike older microwaves, the microwaves today are not built to last, but have lives of about 3-5 years. You will spend a lot for the built-in trim (sometimes the trim cost as much as the microwave itself), and then when you want to replace the microwave, you won't find one the same size and you will be stuck. Better just to be able to uplug and swap out really easily. Also, I cannot imagine spending any where near $1000 on a convection microwave. Please be aware that there are just a few microwave manufacturers, and most of the high-end names on microwaves (Viking, Dacor, Wolf, etc.) are just re-badges. The majority of microwaves are made by Samsung and Panasonic, and then a few by GE or LG. So, if you buy, e.g., a Viking microwave for $1000, you could have found the same microwave by Samsung without the Viking badge and Viking door, for half that. Anyway, I recommend the Panasonic Genius Prestige for a good convection microwave. It is the best looking microwave out there with its clean modern look, it works well, the dial adjustment is a great convenience. About $500. As to whether the convection feature is worthwhile, that's up to you, but be aware that the convection feature takes up a lot of the cubic feet of a microwave, and you will never really get the results that you would from an oven. If you truly want a microwave that can double as an oven, check out the GE Advantium. But I recommend the more powerful 220v version to make it worthwhile. That new model Advantium in the 220v will cost about $1700 (but it is like having a 2nd oven and microwave in one), and you need to have the 220v outlet for it, but you can find the previous model 220v Advantiums for under $1000. I had the Sharp R-930CS for a couple of years but it never met my expectations. The display was difficult to read because of its black background and the microwave functions were pretty mediocre. It didnÂt heat frozen entreesÂ consistently and I couldnÂt pop popcorn at all Â even after putting the bag on an inverted pie plate like Sharp recommends. The convection features worked great though Â no complaints there. The porcelain-coated metal tray has a deep lip for catching spills but it was a bit of a pain to clean. After considering the possibility of buying a separate microwave I decided to bite the bullet and replace the Sharp. Given my first experience with a convection/microwave I was pretty wary but I love my Panasonic NN-C994S after just 3 months. ItÂs a really attractive oven too. My review is on Amazon.com. P.S. The Sharp still looked like new when I sold it. The guy who bought it was thrilled to get it at a 50% discount and I was thrilled to get a deal on the Panasonic on Ebay. I have been planning our kitchen reno so long that some of my original appliances are discontinued. One of the appliances was PSB2201NSS GE Profile Advantium Wall Oven - Stainless Steel...it was 27". I would like one similiar in size that would go in our island vs. Over the range.....any recommendations? Thanks!

So, make a niche(s) with the proper electric service and size to have a built-in put in if you really need it to sell (but I bet you won't)--if you're planning to sell within three years, get the built-ins already, but otherwise, they're going to be just so many used appliances. If yours are truly ratty, you can buy new versions of each. If you WANT a speed oven, and intend to use it as such, that's another story. Go for it! Read through the manuals, etc. But I think you'll find that it's not at all the same thing as your Breville toaster oven. You can use the convection oven settings on a speed oven to perform some of the same functions, but it's a real oven, with limitations, not a toaster that tap dances. I sometimes use my speed oven the way others use a toaster oven--mainly for heating up frozen appetizers or reheating casseroles when other ovens are full, but my old (dead) toaster oven was beloved for making great toast, which a speed oven isn't, and not for other uses. I do zap sandwiches on MW mode, and once in awhile lightly defrost or melt, but if I used a microwave more, I wouldn't have such an expensive machine doing it. I agree with putting enough thought into a remodel that it won't limit resale, because you never know what the future will bring--thus make sure there's place for built-ins to be built into--but unless it's a flip, it should be designed for your own use and enjoyment, and you used the key words "heavily use" and "love".

Since you need an answer right away, but have not received answers on your thread, I would advise you to look at previous threads on this Forum on your subject; there have been a lot.

Yes, I had already looked at those threads using the search and they don't specifically address the information that I am looking for. Thanks for the suggestion though. My main question is: "is there an available microwave/convection oven that will fit in an 18" depth or less wall cabinet?"
