Spell check not working well

I recently purchased a new computer with Vista Home Basic. I've been working in Microsoft office and quite frankly, the spellcheck works poorly. In addition to my poor spelling skills, I rely on spellcheck to assist in my even worse typing skills. There are so many obvious errors that spellcheck is not catching that it seems worthless. It is working and catchs some mistakes, but nowhere nearly as many as I think it should.

Could you please offer some examples? My MS office 2003 is a bit too efficient, I have to keep adding my 'slang' to the dictionary.

Here's some examples with the correct spelling following the sentence. My spellcheck found all these to be correct.

I like rassberry tarts (raspberry)
upsidedown cake ( upside down)
remoce the part (remove)
illistrated (illustrated)
spinnach (spinach)

Weird huh?

In firefox: tools > options > advanced > general. About half way down the dialog box is a space to spell check while you write.

I got this from Outlook Express help: "To check the spelling in messages Outlook Express uses the spelling checker provided with the following Microsoft Office programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs installed, the Spelling command is not available. In the New Message window, click Spelling on the toolbar, or on the Tools menu, click Spelling. Note To customize the way your spelling checker works, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then select the Spelling tab."

Very timely. A letter to the Editor in today's paper says it all. Congratulations to Monique Cliche and her letter to the editor about changing the Ontario school curriculum. I say "back to the basics." Once a good foundation has been established the technology can then enhance the learning process. Consider the following: Eye road my hoarse two there house last weak but know won was their. Do ewe no wear they went? Eye rote this note using spell cheque; witch way is write? Can you imagine applications to Teachers College, any university, any business or industry being accepted from a person who relies solely on spellcheck? I was not corrected once by my spellcheck in the above note, yet it is all wrong.

iespell will work for your typing into the reply boxes here and other places on line that you would need it to. It should have put a little iespell icon on your browser toolbar. I never use IE anymore but I have used IEspell for years back when I did. What version of IE are you using? click up top on help then about IE and it will tell you the version. You might try Speckie add on. this might be helpful Add Spell Checking to Internet Explorer 9

That would suggest to me that your spell checker is turned off. Open Word, click Tools at the top then Options. In the new window click the 'Spelling and Grammar' tab and see if the first box has a tick in it. Also the third if you wish Word to suggest corrections.

Microsoft Office Word 2007 automatically spotted everyone for me.

Most spell checkers test for mis-spellings, but not misused words. For example, I been seeing the words "brake" and "break" used interchangeable, and the spell checker wont discover this since both words are spelled correctly. Other common interchanges:

there and their
its and it's
good and well
those and these
we're and weir
dove and drove
mail and meal

However, a grammar and puctuation checker may flag some misused words.

The spellcheck in outlook express often makes errors, too. Is there a way to fix this ?

The default install of OE does not include a spell checker. Perhaps you have MS Office or just MS Word or a third party spell check on your computer?

Perhaps the misspelled words have been added to your Custom Dictionary...

I use XP Pro and one way to check it out is through Outlook Express ( mine is set up with Word for the spell check )... You go to Tools, Options, Spelling and click on Edit Custom Dictionary... On my machine it comes up in Notepad and I just delete the lines with the misspelled words.... Well you could do a search for CUSTOM.DIC ...

Don't know where I have it from, but OE does indeed have a large red checkmark, with an ABC above it at the top of the page with other choices, such as attach, sign, encrypt, etc.when I am sending or "creating" a message.And, it does make errors, the last spelling, "ridiculous" as ridicules, which may have been a grammar, not spelling error.
