Microsoft Security Essential just came to life :)

Earlier this morning, MSE suddenly ran a virus scan and I've never seen it do that before. After checking the settings, I see that it runs at this time every week (I'm probably just never up that early on a Saturday!) My question is this...do I need AVAST if I have MSE? Thank you in advance.

No there is no need for Avast or even any anti spyware if you do not want them. One anti virus is all that is needed, more than one can cause a conflict. However with anti malware there is nothing wrong with 2 or even 3 if you feel the need. Since MSE came out it is all I use along with the MS firewall on Windows 7.

Owbist is totally correct in his report, but I would like to expand one point. Any additional malware detection applications need to be configured on-demand and not running continuously in the background if the privilege is offered. I personally have three on-demand malware applications on my system which are all updated, and ready to go if needed.

since you said you don't know anything about it then I would run a belarc to get all the info about the pc and a SIW, plus you will want to run a secunia scan to see what needs updating on it and do those asap. Belarc Advisor SIW those are good to print so that you have all the info handy should you need it. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) I forgot to mention adding spywareblaster to your security list, just install, update then once a week open it hit update then click the enable all protection so the shield turns green. SpywareBlaster be sure you get the free version when you go to the download link just continue with the one you started with do not move to the trial of the pay version.

Windows Defender is a part of the Vista operating system, so it cannot be removed without risking total failure of the operating system. Hence, for Vista users, Defender should be disabled if it's services are not needed. Thanks, Zep and Raven. I had a hard time finding the free ZA download, but managed to avoid the other stuff in the end. Oh, yeah, and I can see that ZA is going to take some getting used to. Lots of things in Program Control that I don't know what to do about, though when I can find time to go through all the tutorials Raven gave a link to, I hope I will begin to understand. But meanwhile: (1) Will Firefox need to be "allowed" under "Server"? If I don't allow it, what might I miss out on? (2) Should I allow Sys32\svchost under both Access and Server? I have no idea what it was allowed previously, though presumably access was allowed. (3) Under Firewall>Advanced, I find "Disable Win Firewall," which I assume is good, now that I have ZA, but what is "Filter traffic over 1394"? No idea at all what 1394 is or what checking this box might do. Only these two boxes were already checked. I will leave them checked until I hear to the contrary by one of you. All help along this line is appreciated!

That .etl didn't show up when I did a search. When I downloaded MSE earlier, it asked if I wanted to replace the file, I said yes. So a little while ago, I downloaded it again and had it sent to my desktop. Uninstalled the old, reinstalled the new one, then restarted. That alert didn't show up, but everything else seem to be running slow. I never had any of the other freebies installed on my computer except CA that came free from cable company. It still shows in add/remove but nothing's there. I used something you guys told me to use to remove the program in the first place before installing MSE. I hope this has taken care of my problem. Will let you know if it comes back next time I restart. Shirley For what it's worth, just in the time it took me to type this, my pc speeded back up to normal.

I have to question is your computer usually turned on/powered up at that time since you say it is the first time you have seen the scan, if the pc is not powered on then the scan will not run so if that is the case you may want to alter the time of day the scan runs so that it is during a time the pc is definitely on.

Antivirus rule is one program per pc actively running.

Microsoft Security Essentials is set by default to run every Sunday at 2 a.m. Any time the computer is not on then the scan will run the next time the computer is started. The scan time can be altered to suit the user of course. As I noted above the program updates automatically too. Nothing to do except on occasion make sure the program is still running and updating, I have been very happy never had an issue with the program myself

With most Dual processor cpu's .. it runs sitting down in the tray tiny animation and you dont notice it.

Thank you, everyone! This is such a good forum. MSE is set to run Saturday a.m. at 8:00 and the computer is booted up at that time. I think I just am never online that early. :)I do have three anti-malware programs and use all three regularly. Thanks again.
