You need to stop using the Preview pane. Not sure how that might be done in Windows Mail. If it is similar to Outlook Express open the program, click View, click Layout... and remove the check mark beside the Preview Pane choice, click Apply and OK. Using the preview pane is exactly the same as opening the mail and if there is coding in there to report back to the sender they now know this is a valid address, hence in huge amount of mail.

Now you will only see the headers and you can click on the top Spam, hold down the CTRL or Control button while clicking on all the other Spams then delete them. If there are a lot in sequence click the first one, hold down the Shift key and click the last one and delete the batch.

Now create a throw away email address at somewhere like canada.com, Yahoo, MSN or any other place. Then when you register at any place like this forum you use that address, never your real one with Sympatico, Rogers or whoever. That way you can discard the throw away address at any time it starts to get overwhelmed with junk mail. Your real address should be reserved for family and close friends only.

A few weeks ago my canada.com started getting 50 to 60 a day but after a couple of weeks it tapered back to 2 to 10 daily.

Dear owbist: I will certainly give this a try as tonight when I opened up my e-mail I have 110 pieces of junk mail. This is beginning to be very frustrating. I dont open any of them but delete them all right away. So thank you very much. I have alreay gone into the program, view, layout ect. so will see what that does tomorrow.

Does not your server have a junk mail receiver and that stuff goes there, you can look thru at your convenience, and delete that there too. I have this in my rural service, is great, and as owbist says regular mail addie is for close ones only. Use gmail.com, hotmail.com or some such other name, that stuff goes in there, and you can also delete at will.

It is unfortunate but the greatest cause of receiving spam is the computer user. As examples, all too often a user signs up/registers at a website using their e-mail address, opens an unsolicited e-mail and "unsubscribes", or posts an e-mail address openly on a website for data miners to seize. Once your address is available in the wild spammers share and sell the address.

As was recommended above, one or more on-line accounts can be utilized for Internet activity. In my case I have an address for forums, an address for on-line shopping, an address for communicating with cyber-individuals, an address for "I'm not comfortable with this", and a primary address for trusted family, friends and finances.

Yes it seems like a lot, but it allows me to control my e-mail and nearly eliminate spam.

I am connected to Verizon DSL. My recent bill indicates I am billed by ESBI (Enhanced Service Billing Inc.)for VoiceMail Monthly Fee.I tried to call ESBI and they do not answer but give me "wait".Is this company a SPAM? any one else with similar experience. I did not aske for a voicemail setup and want to get a credit for the bill.

Thank you all for your remarks. I have tried a couple of your suggestions, but when I opened my e-mail tonight I have 125 pieces of junk mail. I think my next option is to get a different e-mail address. Perhaps this is the way to go.

It would be best that you start a new thread since you are experiencing a different problem.

After you type your message in the message box, you should check the little box next to the message Check here if you would like copies of follow-ups to your message emailed to you. Often replies will come in about a problem for days to weeks at a time.

I use a little program called PopMan to look at mail on the server and delete things I don't want before even really downloading the email into your mail program or Outlook Express, whatever.

It lets you look at a few lines of text, the who from, who to, subject, size... it can filter or blacklist/whitelist. Freeware.

Works great for me in my isp email as I seldom use isp for email yet I still get some spam, some email and mainly the ISP change notices and specials,,, always a couple things occasionally that do need attention.

I use a yahoo addy for "stuff' but have been getting some junk in my TBird mail. Couple days ago got one that seemed to be from my ISP, but there where two extra letters in the Sender, so I called my ISP and they said it was not from them. The subject had something to do with Security; don't remember exactly.

Of course I didn't open it. Deleted it after calling my ISP.

I'm going to check out POPMAN.

one of the worst problems is not using the blind carbon copy feature when forwarding emails. And unfortunately the ones that will do that are your trusted friends and family! I never forward an email that shows others email addresses it is just very very bad behavior and it shows no regard for the people whose addresses are being spread all over the net.
When I have people do that to me I politely ask them not to include my email address in those emails if they can not use the BCC feature. I in turn will not use theirs in that fashion either.
I usually also include a link like these.

If you have not been using BCC please do yourself and everyone else a HUGE favor and start using it now. Help stop the spammers from getting our addys.

On my Windows Mail (Vista), and I previously did the same with Outlook Express (Win98), I created message rules to direct any e-mails with Fwd, CC, and BCC in the Subject to the Deleted folder. I then set the folder to empty when the client was closed.

All my trusted friends and family were independently notified and it is their problem if they send me something important and I never see it.

These tips will not instantly fix your spam problem. It all takes time. Does your ISP do any junk mail filtering? Does your email program have any junk mail filtering? I didn't see if you told us which email program you are using, although some people gave tips on specific programs.

If you decide to get a new email address, gmail has very good junk mail filtering. I've been very happy with them.

One way to cut down on the amount of SPAM you receive is to be sure to report it as SPAM to your service provider. If you just DELETE the mail, you will continue to receive e-mails from those same people over and over. Reporting it as SPAM helps the service providers to identify spammers and marks those addresses so they don't continue going to your Inbox. It may seem inconvenient to have to mark mail as SPAM, but it is well worth the effort and eventually you will receive much less of these annoying e-mails.
