Opportunity Knocks - Miele Floor Models vs. Brand New

We had planned to buy a Miele Chef Oven, matching warming drawer and trim kit, and Diamante Plus dishwasher as part of our new house build. Have since asked the dealer for an upgrade to the Dimension dishwasher. Retail price is the order of the day for all above, much to my dismay.

Received an email from him yesterday, offering me the models below with full factory warranty - these were floor models, and at least some have been used for the lunches they put together for customers.

Speed oven h4082, 829.00---This is master chef mod New chef mod.h4084---2099.00

Warmer, esw4822---789.0, new mod. Esw4824---1295.00

Dishwasher, g2872scs, top mod. 1869.00 this mod. New 2699.00

Even though we prefer the simplicity of the Chef model speed oven, I don't think we're losing anything to go with the Master Chef model.

What do the local Miele users think about these offers? They look pretty tempting to me.

I got the g2872scs from an authorized dealer for $1669. I just got the DW not a package,you should get at least that price since you are buying a suite of appliances.I got it with the 4" SS toekick. The UMRP,including toekick,was $2504.

I would take the warming drawer but try to negotiate for a better price.

At my local Pacific Sales I was considering a floor model Advantium. I then noticed a heavy smell. I showed up one morning,and it was being heavily used by many employees for breakfast.It is one thing to be a floor model it is another if it is used. I would check into that. $829 for a floor model seems like a good price, a bit high for a used model.

BTW I live in Los Angeles,not someplace where commercial rents are low and merchants give bigger than usual discounts.

deeagaux, thanks very much. I just got back from the dealer's, and your advice was invaluable.

The dishwasher and warming drawer looked perfect, even though both had been used.

The Master Chef Speed Oven, though, was another story. It had all the trays, manual and probe inside it, so the guy looked slightly askance at me as I practically put my head into the cavity for a second look at the oven interior.

The second time, I noticed that the roof of the oven was covered with black/brown flecks and chunks of food.

I told him that I'd take the dishwasher and warming drawer, but that I wasn't interested in the oven. God knows what that would smell like when it was hot! He said he'd get it cleaned up, but he needn't do so on my account. I may spring for a Master Chef after all, but it will be a new one.

I asked where the stainless toekick for the dishwasher was and he said that he thought they only came in black. He said he'd get me one (but I'm thinking it won't be stainless based on his initial answer. If stainless is what I should be holding out for, please let me know. I'll do some research in the meantime.

Thank you again for your recommendations. The appliance market in Orlando, despite having several major dealers, isn't at all competitive. Full retail is the norm, package or no. Really aggravating. I bought my Capital Culinarian and ModernAire range hood insert from Trevor, saved myself sales tax (did have to pay a nominal fee for shipping, though), and doubled the manufacturer's wrarranty using my AMEX card.

Tempted to do this for the D/W, speed overn and warming drawer, but it's easier to buy them out of the allowance in the house build budget.

Sorry to hear about the KA issues. I was concerned as well when I got a KUDE70FVSS model in February 2010. The vent is located on the left side of the top edge of the door, next to the controls. It is not on the side of the door. KA's are deep and most will not fit flush under normal depth cabinets I hear. We have about a 1 1/4 inch granite countertop overhang which happens to be about the thickness of the door. So in our case we pushed the DW back until the door was lined up with the cabinet fronts but the door is completely underneath the granite countertop. It actually looks pretty good. (Our old WP was flush mounted with cabinet matching panels installed) We put the moisture strip supplied by KA on the bottom of the granite, for no good reason but figured why not. There is a small strip of cabinet under the granite that forms the top of the cabinet opening for the DW that is, of course, wood. If I put the moisture strip on it, it showed since the strip is a shiny material, so I left it off. I kept an eye on it for months to see what happened and I have never seen any moisture or noticed any steam coming from the vents at all, regardless of the time of day we run the DW. The wood under the granite and all around the DW looks fine and has never shown any sign of getting wet. Not sure what system they are using in this model but apparently it does not suffer from the same problems as the side vent models.

Thanks to all of your advice on this thread and past threads, we purchased the floor model G5775SCSFSS. It was selling for $1708, but because of the sale and a few scratches on the top control panel near the corner we snagged it for $1280. The scratches aren't visible when the door is shut. I'm not sure what full retail was originally, but it seems like a good deal. I would have even gone up in models if they had had one on clearance. Redoingit--I appreciate your experience. Sparkling--thank you for pulling up those specs. Covingtoncat--Mine is a Q4. I'm noise sensitive so I figured the quieter the better. Plus, the price was better on the Dimension Plus anyway even with the sale. Odd, huh? A2--I won't relate the fact that the noise started right after you visited.... ;) the racking system is the newest configuration, I think. Rococo--I appreciate you chiming in as I've read many of your posts with your experiences. Thanks to you, I know to ask to have the Miele hooked up to cold water. My concern about the handle protrusion was alleviated when I saw the store display. I think it will tuck mostly under the marble overhang. There isn't a good spot near the cleanup sink for a towel to hang so the bar handle will be handy. The photo you posted is very informative. Thanks!! Deeageaux--Thanks for the link. Your posts on other threads in the past have been helpful in sorting out the models also. Your time spelling it all out is immensely appreciated!! With the installation scheduled for Tuesday, I have a couple of remaining questions. I'd like to get the DW running ASAP as I'm sick of washing two DW loads per day by hand, and we're having a dinner party Thursday night. 1. Is the filler strip something that can be easily DIY'd by DH after install? Obviously it can't be here by Tuesday if I order it tomorrow. 2. I'm confused about the salt issue. Will the tech help me through this? Do I need salt if my water hardness is "slightly hard" at 55-60 mg/L? Is this regular salt or a special Miele salt? 3. Do I need any other special Miele products? 4. I've been using jet dry and Finish Powerball tabs in my old Kenmore. Are these OK to use? I have about a year's supply of each thanks to Costco coupons. Thank you all again so much! I'm looking forward to posting rave reviews of my Miele in future threads. :-)

SO, there was no word from Mr. Appliance today AND Miele was also unable to reach him ??? Did they not offer to put you on their in house guy's sched. at that point ? Do not disagree with you about EXPECTING a working DW - floor model or not. However, you didn't get that and there is no going back to square one. It's like a wrecked car - it's not EVER going to be unwrecked. You chose to pursue a remedy and that's what has turned into a fiasco! I'm not convinced that if you had gone in on the 9th ( which makes it only 20 days, not a month) that FL Builders wouldn't have stonewalled you then too. Perhaps they would have convinced you to have it repaired and they would have sent their "guy" who just may have been from your favorite: new york minute - then how much agro would you be writing about. Additionally, your first contact with the actual manufacturer who underwrites the warranty was on the 15th or 16th making it 5-7 business days depending on how you count em. Now 7 days doesn't exactly make me feel all warm and fuzzy but it's not an eternity either. I'm more concerned @ MR. Appliance going AWOL and Miele's inability to get movement. The svc. cntr. is still open the left coast crowd - maybe another call to them for an explanation @ Mr. App. at least. Maybe they'd bump you up their guy's list - though the person to make that happen won't be in until tomorrow on the East Coast. "What silly things have I done? " Not exactly silly , but going back to the unhelpful , and stonewalling dealer to expedite the repair and alter the terms of the deal ( xtended warranty refund ) was not your finest moment. I understand you wanting to be rid of this mess, and I hope you can get you $$$ quickly - but prepare yourself for another battle with FL. B and your cc co. If it (battle) doesn't happen, great - but you'll drink less and have fewer grey hairs if in fact it shakes out that way. Remember the dealer experience when they wanted your $$$ - think about how they'll act when asked to give it back to you ! Be sure to get EVERYTHING IN WRITHING from the dealer when returning the DW.

I am not going to tell anyone what to buy. We all have different situations. Many on this forum are having good success with the 4840. It seems like if you need the jumbo capacity then it would be OK and you can get the heater to work just not on normal. I think older Whirlpools don't use their heater on normal either. I don't need a washer the size of a house. I separate clothes by fabric and color especially since higher temps can remove dyes faster, and will also cause anything with spandex to quickly deteriorate. I do wash comforters in my 6K with no problem but that depends on the bulkiness of comforters. So in the future if I need a new comforter I won't buy a bulky one. The 5 and 6k machines have been in use for many years in the U.S.A and all over the world, but it is only here in the U.S.A that we feel that things must be big to get things done. I understand the idea that 20 sets of jeans can be washed at one time. I also understand that folks want to wash comforters, but I also find that I can wash larger loads in my 6K machine than I could in my super capacity top loader and they get cleaner. So I guess it depends on what your needs are. If you sort your laundry are you going to wash the equivalent of 20 pairs of jeans in each load? Here's my trick. If I have a particularly large load, one with heavy soil, I will use the extended cycle which washes and rinses longer. Otherwise I don't need extended; things get clean with the regular shorter cycle. If the load is large and dirty and can take higher heat I use the regular short cycle and increase the temperature. if the load is small the machine reduces the cycle times and everything still gets clean. so there are a lot of variable you can play around with the achieve the result you want. The new 5.5K washers are 120V so that it will be easier for folks to install them..but they don't heat to 200F either. Will the older 220V models continue to be sold or phased out? I paid $75 to have the 220V line run from the electric box to the machine. Do you already have 220V? Are you willing to pay for it to be installed? I have not needed to use LCB since having my FL. Are you willing to LCB for heavy stains? Regular use of LCB is not recommended (or needed for cleaning) for the smaller ones because I think they contain a SS outer drum while the newer units do not. Does this matter to you? This is a new model only released to the U.S.A. I am sure Miele does a good job of production and testing but do you want to buy version one of anything or would be be better to wait for release two? Sure incremental changes have been made to the smaller units but the basics and footprint have not changed that much so they must be on version 150. The smaller previous miele models contain some of the same cycles the 4840 does, difference is they are smaller, use 220V and can heat the water hotter and faster. So like I mentioned every ones situation will be different. For me - I have had my washer(W1986) wince 2003 and there is nothing wrong with it. So I don't need a washer and plan to keep this one and have it repaired as needed for as long as possible. I do like having the option of higher temps, higher rinse levels and water consumption if I want it. This is a minor thing but I like the heavy SS door and lock on my machine too. Situations will vary. Do what is right for you.

I doubt the warming drawer has been used much so that seems like a great price. The speed oven, although being used by the employees is almost $2k off the Master Chef price. I find the interface to be invaluable on the Master Chef and if it looks to be in good shape, is a great buy.

If the dishwasher is used, I'm not so sure that is a good deal. Although this a great dishwasher. IMHO a used appliance should be about half the cost of the new one even if in great shape. The full warranty does add value though. Find out how long it's been on the floor. if everyone uses it and their are 15-20 employees or more, it's been used a lot, but if their are only 5 or 7 or 8 employees, maybe it hasn't been

Glad I could be of help.

I don't know how many are out there for the previous genration DW'ers.

My guess would be the DW was used for people to see how loud it was not as daily dw for the employees.

Warming drawer was probably rarely turned on.

I would expect to pay $500-$650 for the used speed oven.

But the idea it is used, full of burnt food is kinda gross.

I think I might just spend the extra cash and get a new one too.
