why would they do this in a new, high end build, please?

I have a couple questions- I am constantly learning so when I do build I will have some knowledge...

1. Friends just built a large -5,000+ sf home. The builder used Hardie Backer board behind the shower wall. This was an 'upgrade'. I was shocked that this would be even considered an upgrade! I have built 3 homes since 1987, and cement board was used in all of them.

2. They have actual wood garage doors- I don't know what kind of wood, but there are alot of 'knots', and already with the drying of the wood there are daylight 'crevices' that show where the wood has shrunk. There is no insulation inside the doors and that makes the garage very hot (Texas). Is this routine?

This is close to a million dollar home- I thought it was not good work, but of course won't say anything, but want to know if this is standrd practice that I will need to watch out for.

Thx
