Spybot 1.6 what's it doing

I just updated my free copy of Spybot to 1.6. I see Spybot 1.6 now sports some gratis scanning when the computer is booted. I suppose this is good, and while I started this post because Spybot was busy advertising its scanning with a balloon statement about what it was scanning. The balloon finally went away, so guess I'm no longer concerned. Maybe there is some way to put that process totally in the background.

You can stop it from scanning from boot up by the following:
With settings set to Advanced, do the following:

>Open the settings menu, look at the settings
options.

>If you go down to system start, make sure no
automation is checked.

hope this helps.

Thanks, I did look just after posting and found I can/did turn off the "balloon". The icon in the "tray" is there and on boot I could see the padlock rotating around the icon, but no balloon. I'm just not used to Spybot doing something without being asked. Suppose this is better as long as I keep the definitions up to date.

I run Avast antivirus alongside the Zone Alarm firewall and a router, do occasional scans with Avast, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, and an occasional online scan with ESET. I do all web browsing in 'Sandboxie'. I thought I'd give 'A-squared' a try yesterday and downloaded and installed version 4.5.0. Today I finally got around to doing a scan and it came up with 5 infected files in the Windows directory: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\systray.exe detected: Trojan.Win32.Genome.dbpb!A2 C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\taskman.exe detected: Trojan.Win32.Genome.dlyp!A2 C:\WINDOWS\system32\systray.exe detected: Trojan.Win32.Genome.dbpb!A2 C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskman.exe detected: Trojan.Win32.Genome.dlyp!A2 C:\WINDOWS\TASKMAN.EXE detected: Trojan.Win32.Genome.dlyp!A2 All of these came up 'clear' with the 'Jotti' and 'Virus Total' online file scanners. Also, I was not scanning with the 'heuristic' setting. I understand that 'false positives' can happen with any scanner, Avast put out a bad 'update' a while back, but this seems to be an ongoing thing with 'A-squared'. PC Magazine had this to say about the 'A-squared' scanner: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2334423,00.asp I urge others to do a little research before you install a program, it's amazing what a simple 'Google' search will come up with. help---can't open spybot or avg

This is a VERY nasty piece of malware. You CANNOT get rid of Braviax by simply deleting both files with that name in c:\windows and c:\windows\system32, or by unmarking it in MSCFG . On the next reboot or start, they will be back, along with everything else in the payload the nasty delivered. Braviax (which actually may have different names)is just part of the pack. One of my employees carelessly clicked on a link that came up in Google when she was searching for a church! The malware unpacked its payload. It scooted past our two active antivirus programs and firewall. Then it sent up a barrage of popups. Many were phony virus alerts; a click would have launched or downloaded more bad stuff. But some alerts also were coming from AVG, McAfee, and Windows. I quickly fired up AVG, it found an infection right away, but before the scan could complete, the virus disabled AVG. AVG and McAfee won't run now, not even in Safe Mode. The nasty also shut down our cable access to the Internet, hijacking our connection -- and started sending out ITS stuff from OUR PC. What a mess. It's going to take an expert to clean it out, damaged files will need to be reinstalled, and it may be that the best solution will be FORMAT C: and reinstall XP from scratch. The fact that we don't have a dedicated removal tool from any of the big antivirus publishers yet suggests how well the bad guys did their nasty work. Send Bill Gates back to the drawing board, with a stop in the woodshed along the way. ed p.

Spybot S&D uninstall question

What you are referring to here is just a restore capablity that is available following a scan and item(s) removal. Go ahead and delete S&B and do a clean install. Be sure to do a search using the word Spybot for any orphan files so you can remove them before the ionstall. I personally do a reboot between the uninstall and the reinstall of any applications configured to the O/S. Some applications require this on there own others don't. It doesn't hurt anything. I absolutely agree with Owbist, a clean install is superior to an overwrite. DA

I just went in and looked again under the immunize section and now I know which ones are unprotected. One is Firefox: 6, 998,998,998= 3000 then there is Mozilla: 6, 998,998,998=3000 a total of 6000 unprotected items. I do not have Firefox installed nor do I have Mozilla installed on this computer. That is strange that they are even counting those since they are not installed. I guess they would be unprotected. "LOL"

Under the Firefox browser and the Mozilla browser it is showing my old email address not my current one. Don't know why that is either. Is it ok to leave it with the old address since I am not using those browsers?

I did not install Spybot the guys who built this computer did. I have always been somewhat confused with Spybot. I did download the new SuperAntiSpyware and have been using it along with my other Spyware removal programs.

Jerry nj,

Sorry I posted to your thread incorrectly. I meant to post it to my thread and just now noticed I made this mistake.
I have now reposted it to my thread (Immunize Question in Spybot 1.6 Search & Destroy)

Again I am sorry for the mistake.
