The only thing I could suggest is to review your privacy settings.

It's a virus that sends out these type messages using your account.
Sometimes it will also post messages in your name.
It has never been clear to me whether your computer is infected
with the virus or is your account on the site infected with the virus.
Running a virus scan on your computer mite be a good idea.

Every time you play one of their games or use one of their cute little applications or answer one of their quizzes, you'll notice you have to give permission to send all your personal information to someone before you can enter that site. That is more than likely where the junk mail is coming from.

Perhaps on foundation these sites might be of a limited use, but with the large number of reoccurring problems being announced with them; personal security issues, identity security issues, system security issues, and the fact that everything on the Internet is cloaked in a veil of potential deception, why do so many well-meaning users migrate blindly to these sites and use them without care and caution?

I think a big reason is that a large proportion of computer users aren't very knowledgeable about how computers and the Internet work, so they are not aware that there is often a cost associated with many "free" and seemingly safe sites. The folks who are running such sites are very good at exploiting the desire of folks to get something for nothing.

and for those using facebook their new so called cool thing is locations/places and let me tell you that one is a real big ugly. If you have not read up about it and how dangerous it can be I suggest you do so and make darn sure you have that thing locked down.

I stay far far away from data mining sites like facebook and the like.

I received the following in an email just this morning. never used the site but it sure seems more trouble than there is any personal gain.

How it works: Frequent Facebook members know the "like" button doesn't always cut it. Though users would often like to voice their disapproval, experts are warning there's no such thing as an "official dislike button." That doesn't mean you won't see prompts to download this rogue application, or posts claiming your contacts are using it. The application will access your profile and spread the scam to your friends, family and coworkers. You might even be asked to fill out a survey first -- for which the crooks earn some cash.

According to experts, the dislike button is the latest in a series of viral scams that usually feature fraudulent links to shocking or funny content.

How to fight it: Experts advise caution when using any social media site. Ignore suspicious sounding ads, links and invites, even if they come from friends and followers. Beware of any generic updates in your news feed that seem out of character (like "OMG I just saw the funniest video. Lol.") or sound more like ad-speak than a legitimate status update. Be cautious about giving out your information or allowing any application you're not familiar with to access your data.

Fortunately, the consequences of this particular Facebook scam are more embarrassing than dangerous. If you are caught, go into your application settings and delete the application. (See the report from security firm Sophos for more information.)

Your point is well taken. May I add, those who are not as computer/Internet aware as they think they are, and like young people, users who have a feeling of invincibility.

Anybody who puts their actual image and/or ANY personal information of any kind on facebook -- or any other such "social networking" site is oblivious to the real risks of the real world in which they live.

And yet, the site continues to expand. All of your kids are there, by the way. Everybody hum lalalalala!

Does it surprise anyone that Facebook etc does so well? It shouldn't when reality tv shows are all the rage too. Boy we live in a great society. And then they gripe when something bad happens!

Earlier this week up to four million Gmail users found their accounts were being used to pump out what appeared to be spam messages.
But, far from being hacked or infected with a virus, the error was a Google problem according to security researcher Graham Cluley.

"At least if your home or business computer is spewing out spam you can pull the cable out of the back of your PC.
When web email services like Gmail go wrong you don't have that option."

I had read about that! Not the first time Gmail has had some pretty serious issues.

In my opinion facebook is a spammer every time I open my email there is something in there from facebook, usually in my junk mail thankfully. And of course they have access to a LOT of email addresses.
