How often do you back up?

Backing up is critical, of course, but how often? I'm sure it varies with each person but it would help to get an idea of what I should be doing. I back up Word docs on floppies every time I stop for the day. I back up all my docs, bookmarks and address book every three months or so on CD. I have all the original installation CDs for my computer. Is that enough?

This means you have to get all your updates and a lot of
downloads caught up. I bought Acronis True Image 10.0 for
my complete hard drive backup. I tested it once and the
only problem I had was I had to redo my AOL connection.
That was easy to correct. It backs up to a Secure Zone.
A seperate partition. The disk will boot your computer
to Recovery Backup if Windows won't load.
It was a bit confusing at first learning to use it.

J&R is cheaper to buy from. Saved me around $25.00

I back up all my important work each night on a flash drive. Probably not the best way but I share the info between two computers and just transfer the data back and forth. I justify that one of the computers is always a back-up.

I have my original CD's and would have to get all my updates if I needed to.

My flash hangs on my key chain with all my keys. I feel safe enough. The flash drive is quicker than backing up to CD's and it's as safe as my car keys.

-Sararock, Lol! I'm always calling myself a slacker when it comes to weeding and doing things I don't like in the garden! But moving plants is kind of fun so I don't mind doing that ;-) Technically, fall and spring are the best times to move things around. The cooler and usually wetter conditions make it easier for the plant to recover and re-establish itself than if it were moved in the full heat of summer. But I've never been one to follow rules ;-) It was last summer that I became fully annoyed with how the garden was looking, so decided to get things moved around right then and there! Of course, it was hot out and after I moved everything they started to wilt terribly and look as if they were on the brink of croaking. I was left scrambling to keep everything hydrated and even got out a big beach umbrella to shade a few plants, lol. But it felt good to get it all accomplished and everything came back nicely this spring. CMK

Super Soft - NYC soft water. Whirlpool. A better explanation. On your laundry tub, where the perforated holes are - that is where most of the water sits during a wash cycle. If you start looking past that, where the wall of that inner tub starts to form leading all the way to the edge of it - that is the area where you will get water just strictly by nature of agitation and overspray, but not as much as it doesn't really *sit in water* during a wash cycle, Too many variables, as different makes have different tub designs, etc. For me, that is the scum ring - but it's also due to how my wash cycles are.. I do suspect that while most people are looking at their gasket, how many of ya'll go to great lenghts to check out the cavity I'm referring to.... I'm a OCD clean freak deep down. I have a commercial grade steam cleaner that not only produces steam but allows me to shoot boiling water through the nozzle - I will put the nozzle in that tight cavity and steam clean/send high pressure boiling water through that cavity (after seeing how this a problem prone area) around the entire perimeter of that area. While this cleans the area , nothing beats a sanitize cycle with the overloaded water dosage to really clean it.

I also really love the Suave Daily Clarifying shampoo, it's dirt cheap and doesn't harm my very delicate fine hair. I just stumbled upon it too. I had bought it for my husband and he didn't use it so I had this huge bottle and used it and was surprised at how well it did for my fine hair and plus, it doesn't make my scalp itch, that has become an issue for me. I also found a conditioner that I love, it's Martix Biolage, the detangling one. Finally, a conditioner that doesn't make my scalp itch AND actually takes the tangles out of my insanely tangle prone hair. I used to shampoo daily because I styled my hair every day. Now, I just put it in a ponytail and call it done. I wash my hair about every third day now. I'd be very afraid to put baking soda in my fragile hair...I'm sure it would destroy it. I once (ONE TIME) used Dr. Bronner's liquid Castile to wash my hair and it damaged it so badly that it had to grow out before it was normal again. UGH! I'm lucky that I have hair, don't get me wrong, but my hair is very weird! My scalp is also very oily...so I cannot go very long without washing. Three days is pushing it and I can only pull it off because I wear it in a ponytail. I also can't stand the smell of stinky hair...UGH! It gets stinky after a couple days. That's when I know it's time to wash!

Since I posted this, I have had another phone call from her - it is almost getting to the point where I get the giggles! It is not that I don't help people, I've made over 80 full size or bigger quilts and I only have one on my bed and one on the sofa - all the others have been given to others. But I hate being manipulated. The fact that I quilt does not obligate me into starting/finishing a quilt for anyone who is looking for the finished project w/o putting anything into it. She did keep saying how much work this is! Yep! And how long it was taking. Yep! She still hasn't caught on that it would take me the same amount of time and work. I only had one other time that someone really tried to take advantage. The women's leader at church thought it would be nice to give a baby quilt to every baby born in the church and to give away a quilt to one woman every year at the women's retreat. She turned to me and said the first baby quilt should go to the newest baby born the week before. I was stunned as I realized 'we' meant 'me'. I asked her who would be making the quilt, 'You.' I asked how the quilt would be from the group and different from the one I had already made and given to this mother. 'Well, we have donated fabric to you, haven't we?' NO! Then she said, 'well, you're still making the quilt to give away at retreat, right?' By then I was getting over being stunned and was moving into being indignant. I asked again, how this quilt would be from the group - would everyone be doing a block and I would just be assembling? She looked at me quite shocked and exclaimed that she did not even have a machine. So once it was clear that what she expected was for me to make the quilts and let her put her name on them, I said NO! I had a back log of projects I was working on and did not have time to do that, and it was being rather presumptuous of her to tell me what I would make. And she even said, 'well, you'd have a whole year to make one; that's enough time.' I think that is when my 'No' was enabled! (I even gave her an older, but in good-working-order Kenmore machine.)

First let's remember that backing up on-board to the HD is not backing up. A system failure regardless of cause is potentially fatal. I cringe when I hear users have "many" pictures or documents stored on their system.

It is my position that data, music and images are the items to be backed up. In other words if it is important to you, back it up. Applications and such can be replaced and updated. (As I shared on another thread, it is beneficial to copy a downloaded setup file onto an amendable CD for potential future use.) To do a application restore from a commercial disk along with any updates may be inconvenient, but far from impossible.

If users were in continuing jeopardy we would all be using continuous backup or off-site storage.

Thumb drives are great, amendable CDs and DVDs are excellent too. Since they are mechanical and subject to failure, floppies should be avoided.

Their is Exterior Hard Drive that can help insure your Documents and Pictures are not lost by computer failure.
Some are powered by USB.
This business of having a draw full of backup CD's gets
old fast. Maxtor 111 One Touch is one and their are many
more.
