vix, I sure do love that bathroom. Just a side note. You did such a great job. I never really picked up how the accent line accentuated the grain of the vanity.

We have an Ikea Hollviken sink *on* a larger countertop -- I like having the big rim around the sink, which is used in Ikea furniture as its own complete counter. It's great to have the rim -- if what you're looking at is *just* sink, you might want to try to find one with a usable rim. But other than that, what's not to like? :)

I'm sorry I don't know how to post a link, but it's the American Standard "Cascada" vanity with the "Newbern" vanity top (on American Standard US website). I saw it in person at a local bath center, and loved the combo. It only comes in a 30" width, though. The bath shop sells it for $184.00, now that I re-checked the estimate slip.

Ah, I saw it (online)...and it *could* be really cool, or it could look like a cultured marble top that while it's easy to clean, is the thing everyone's taking out now and could be *considered* a liability. But that could be their problem, if it's good quality and useful for you. If you put fascinating fixtures with it, you could make it really work, IMO.

Flyleft: Do you have a picture of your Ikea Holliviken bathroom sink on the countertop? I bought that sink several months ago and absolutely love the trough design, but want to place it on a larger counterspace instead of the smaller cabinet Ikea uses. I can't seem to find a vanity that works and I'm at the point of trying a custom cabinet shop and have them make me a bathroom vanity for it. Even though the sink is pretty big (21 1/2 x 31 1/2), I still want a few inches on either side of it. What did you use for a vanity and countertop?

HI rosie -- we have it in a 54x21.5" counter alcove. What we did is made a countertop and then mounted it over two 12" base pullout cabinets (love them!) my DH cut down to be shallower than the usual 24". The real trick is that we have *two* faucets going into it, one on each side! We have that hole in the middle to cover, but that's not a big problem to us. We only had the 54" space, so we did a European thing and got a nice big sink and have the two faucets, since the water is really what's the issue with two people using the bathroom, not the actual sink. We can fit there and brush our teeth there/I can do makeup while he's shaving etc. no problem, although due to our schedules it doesn't happen often. Even when we have two faucets going the sink can handle it.

I originally planned, and got about 5/6 of the way through making, a teak countertop, repurposed from an old solid danish modern coffee table...but when I realized the cats would scratch it like they did all our furniture, I resignedly made the countertop out of silestone remnants -- one on each side (I cut faucet holes) and one piece across the back and the front. There are *very* indistinct seams just in a bit from the sink corners, and there are steel bars front and back that run through the top of the cabinets and across the entire span of the sink area. Lots of engineering :)

You could probably do it more easily if you didn't mind having a sinkbase cabinet. I wanted open space under it for the sake of visual space (and technically a wheelchair access or walker access, although space is a bit tight in the WC area). If you will take a 30" sinkbase and add on cabinets to the sides make whatever length you want, just make sure the hole is well supported underneath, make the legs of the cabinets a bit lower (we lowered ours too) to compensate for the extra height of the sink, and put a counter over the whole thing.

I'll try to take a pic, but DH isthe only one who knows how to upload them. We haven't finished trimming out the covering over the steel bar in front, so you will be able to see the engineering right there :)

Flyleft: Thanks so much for the info. I think Ikea has the 12" kitchen pullout base cabs, is that what you used? I thought to use a base kitchen cabinet, but now you have given me an idea to use a least one of the 12" pullouts along with a standard base cabinet. We have 84" to work with, so space isn't really an issue although I really want to avoid the look of a long, blocky set of built in cabinets against the wall. I can see where the sink, which is fairly heavy, would need some major support like your steel rods. How clever of you to mount a faucet on each end of the sink. I would love to see a picture of that and, although we won't go that route, I think it is a great idea and the sink is certainly big enough to accommodate two faucets. The Hollviken sink will also be our only sink in the master bath. I don't feel we need to go the double sink route because we really don't need it and it would just be another extraneous item to keep clean. I am trying to keep the whole bathroom renovation as simple, clean lined, and cost effective as possible.

Yes, rosie, that's what we used. They're so wonderful for this purpose. I use it every day and basically it's drawers without the surface busy-ness of three openings. Simple, clean-lined, and cost-effective :)

(I did put an extra coat of some protectant or other -- can't remember what it was offhand -- on the Hallarum doors and side panels we used, since they were going into a bathroom)
