Beware of web sites and free spyware that isn't free

I went to Download.com to download the free spyware program "Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4". I followed all the correct pathways and downloaded a program which was labeled Spyware Bot even though the pathways to it said Spybot search and destroy. I thought nothing of this at the time. After 45 minutes of downloading I was asked to register with my name and zip code. I did. Then a screen popped up and did a quick scan and said I had two hundred infections in my computer. This program, of course, would remove them, but first I had to pay up $19.95.

Of course, I did not pay or go any further. I X'd out the open windows then went to "add and remove programs" and removed this new program which had been entered on the list.

I had been told that Download.com is a safe place to go and download. Hmmmm!

Sometimes I download at PC World.
This Spybot has a Free License.

Download.com is a safe place - provided you pay attention. It is very easy to get caught, you clicked on an advertisement not a recommendation from download.com, big difference. The advert says "Search and Destroy - free", the word Spybot does not appear and they will catch thousands with that sneaky approach so do not feel bad.

Having removed the program I would most definitely go online for a free scan from Housecall, BitDefender or Symantec or your own favourite online scan to be sure you are clean. I would also run Crap Cleaner just to satisfy my mind.

MWheel, a friend piqued my curiosity when he said you got a special message on reachng 10,000 (and it's true...and still another message when you hit 20,000). Besides, I love word games LOL. Andie...I'm not sure about the number of grains...maybe 40 in a half cup which expands to one cup when cooked? The site originally offered 10 grains for a correct answer then changed to 20. I feel it's sort of a plus to be able to help a little...sort of like one person's recycling doesn't solve the greater problem but at least it's something. josh

There is a book by USDA Forest Service that is free for the asking...color photos...nice book. Order a box of 40 copies from pubrequest@srs.fs.usda.gov; ph. 828-257-4830; mail: Southern Research Station, PO Box 2680, Asheville, NC 28802. You can download this book from three different sites, but I think it would be better to get the books. Who wants to print all of this out?? Even better, there are downloadable powerpoints of conference presentations to use for free.I could use the ones on the plants to make my own presentation, but some of the others would need someone a little better versed on the problem. I have installed, used and recommended the following programs. Uninstall all other Anti-virus programs, spyware hunters etc. Download and install the following (all free, by the way) 1. AVG Free Antivirus 2. Lavasoft Adaware (Personal edition-free) 3. Spybot Search and Destroy 4. Spyware Blaster (that name only..no variations) 5. Crap Cleaner 6. A-squared 7. Goldy, SpywareBlaster does not remove anything from your computer. Instead, it helps protect your computer from bad stuff. When you download it, be sure to click on "enable all protection". Then it should tell you that it has protected all the browsers that you use. The number of items listed in the database is just showing you how many things it is protecting. Mine shows 15770 items in the database. Yours will probably have a different number. You do not run scans with this program. All you do is keep it updated by opening it every few weeks or once a month and click on "Update", and after it updates, then click on "enable all protection". That's it. It just helps protect your computer and does not remove anything. Again, I would urge you to install WOT. With that, you don't do anything but pay attention to the ratings it gives different sites and stay away from anything that is not shown with a green circle.

A user must ALWAYS be vigilant. Never take anything for granted regarding software; free, commercial or shareware, or websites themselves. Research and knowledge is the key to protection.

My favorite "not-what-it-appears-to-be " site is freecreditreport.com. It is a commercial service rather than the free annual credit check we are all entitled to. I share with anyone whom will listen to use the ftc.gov site as a portal to the service.

It is unfortunate you oops'd with Spybot, but it sounds like your remedial response will be sufficient.
