'Free Rice' Web Site

A month or so ago, there was a post about this site -- I apologize for not remembering who posted it. It told how playing this simple vocabulary game could help to feed hungry people. Twenty grains of rice are donated for every correct answer. I thought it was fun, so put it on my Favorites. Each day, I play long enough to donate 1,000 grains of rice, not a lot, maybe, but something.

Anyway, there was a segment on NBC's national news this evening about the site. How it's being used in schools to help kids learn vocabulary and donate rice at the same time. I'm glad to know it's not only a legitimate site, but one that seems to be helping hungry people.

Isn't it fun? I don't play every day...more likely to try and hit 10,000 once in awhile all in one swell foop. And yes, I believe it's legitimate and money raised by advertisements is donated to United Nations food distribution program. josh

Gosh, I don't know how long it would take me to reach 10,000 grains of rice! That's quite impressive!

moontime, I need some sunshine. I realy like the article, JOSEPH ORR'S FABULOUS "MUD HEAT-STORAGE" SOLAR GREENHOUSE. I'm sirously thinking about giving it a wirl. It's to bad the article doesn't have more detail. 6ft x 30 roof collector? Is it like a solar water heater. Heating air instead of water. How much soil between the loops of pipe. Ect Ect.......... Tricia, I used to do free rice all the time. I have it bookmarked on my computer. I even looked it up in Snopes to see if it was for real. (It was) I love the idea of playing with words (I LOVE word games) and helping to feed the hungry at the same time.

That site won't load for me, but just as a curiosity, how many grains of rice are in a cup?

MWheel, a friend piqued my curiosity when he said you got a special message on reachng 10,000 (and it's true...and still another message when you hit 20,000). Besides, I love word games LOL.

Andie...I'm not sure about the number of grains...maybe 40 in a half cup which expands to one cup when cooked? The site originally offered 10 grains for a correct answer then changed to 20. I feel it's sort of a plus to be able to help a little...sort of like one person's recycling doesn't solve the greater problem but at least it's something. josh
