What size/shape sink for small vanity?

We will have a small vanity in our mudroom. The top (lagos azul limestone honed) will be 30" wide by 23" deep, and there will be a 3/4" thick backsplash and side splash. I need to order a sink, and I am wondering how small it should be, and whether it should be rectangular or oval.

Small sinks that I have identified include the Cheviot Ashton, oval, 20.5" by 17.5" (see link below) and the Toto Promenade, rectangular, 22.5" by 18.75":

The Toto happens to match the toilet we have in there, but there won't be much of the expensive counter showing if I use it.

I also have to choose a faucet. Both sinks have widespread options, but I'm wondering whether I should do something smaller, like a single-hole faucet.

The oval sink you have chosen is about the smallerst you will find in a drop in basin. I happen to like oval versus rectangular.

Have you considered an undermount sink? It will give you more counter top area around the sink and you will see more of the top.

Also can you get the side and backsplashes cut down to 3/8 or 1/2 inch thick? It will give you a little more clearence behind the faucet. I also think is looks proportionally better on a small vanity.

Great suggestions, Mike. I was starting to wonder about an undermount sink, but I hadn't even thought about the back and sidesplashes. I will look into cutting them down.

Just installed one. We put in a corner cabinet it was 14" above the counter top and a custom built lazy susan for the corner base. Didn't think it was practical, but what a great way to store bathroom articles that normally you have to dig for.

What I like best about mine is having one. Period. But I also like that it is large enough to fit a large pot or colander when needed, small enough to give me plenty of space in my island counter and my cabinet underneath. Mine is about 15x15 or 16x16 and seems a good size for me. I would go a little bigger, but not smaller --especially if you are putting and instant hot at the prep sink. Mine has a corner faucet (with pulldown sprayer -- don't forget spraying for rinsing veggies, etc.) with soap dispenser att he opposite corner. An instant hot there too would be a bit cramped, especially if you also have an air switch there.

I am squarely in the big, single bowl camp, so my opinion would differ from yours. I had a split sink, with one side much smaller than the other. The garbage disposal was in the small side, so I ended up trying to rinse and scrape dishes into a much too small side of the sink. Yours is a bit better proportioned, although I would want something that I could fit all of my cookware in---including baking sheets, large baking pans, etc. I would absolutely choose the 33 x 22 sink, but it sounds like you view things differently. So it comes down to choosing whether you want to play it safe and buy a sink that could be swapped out if necessary or buy the sink you feel would be most functional for your purposes.

I have a 48" vanity w/an 18"X13" sink. It's a perfect size for this vanity. I believe it would be too big for the 32" (your countertop will hang over 1"). It all depends on how much counter space you like. 13" is a good depth though, regardless of vanity size. I'd say your 13-15" would be a good size for the 32'' you want something like this, with at least this much on the sides

Be careful with the stated sizes of undermount sinks. The stated size is the usually the outer rim of the sink which is hidden underneath the counter.

I made a costly mistake last year by ordering an undermount which was much smaller than I though it was. I didn't realize it until after it was installed. I learned my lesson on this. Look at the sink in person before you order.
