Disconnecting a portable hard drive

I just bought a 640GB Toshiba Canvio portable hard drive to connect mainly to my Sony Vaio desktop running Win Vista. I do not intend to use this as a backup drive (I already have an external drive for that). I am just using this one to store an extra copy of certain large files. I intend to plug it in when I want to copy files to it and then disconnect it. This drive does not have an on-off switch. Do I need to use the "Safely Remove" option before unplugging the USB cable, or can I just pull the plug (as long as I am sure the file transfer is done)?
