What brand do you use? I need to buy one limited budget 60.00

Right now have a linksys. On the fritz, always resetting it.

Don't have a big area to cover.

zep I usually always go linksys/cisco and that is what I currently have, got it at walmart. wrt54gs2 v1 is what it says on the bottom of mine, was super easy to set up and have had zero problems with it.

when I was on verizion fios I used their provided d-link but was not wireless.

Good enough for me. I like Walmart. I can get the router along with a loaf of bread.

Thank you all...I'm going to try it tomorrow. One more question. My set up is in an open cabinet system. My son recommended the router and modem be at the very top of the cabinet. This has always been a problem for me when I have to unplug and reset either the modem or router. Since I am unplugging the equipment anyway I think moving it down one shelf would be better. The wires would not be so tight. And it would be easier to reach...no ladders,etc! So...does the router have to be at the highest point in the room or can it be lower and on an open shelf more within reach. Hiding all the wires was important to me at the time so all the wires are behind the three unit cabinets. Since I seem to have frequent issues I can't worry about that anymore! So I guess the new router won't recognize the settings on the computer? I have to do a new setup as if this is the first time? Sounds easy enough....wish me luck..... Thanks again.

Your router should have a manual of some sort that tells you step by step how to set up and connect to your network. Just installing something from a CD does not set up the network. Your router must be connected correctly to your PC to work properly. My XP computer has in Control Panel a wireless network setup wizard. You could try that if no instructions came with your router.

follow the directions given with the router you do not change any cords till the cd tells you to take that step. Leave your desktop as you have had it, put the cd in the desktop cd drawer, run the cd follow the instructions it will tell you and show you exactly how and when to change the cords it will lead you through step by step, READ the instruction pamphlet that came with it that tells you what the cd does. When it tells you to set up a password for the router do it and write it down then tape that to the bottom of your router along with the name you give the SSID for your wireless network, you will at some point have to select to choose WPA2 for your method of security it is generally set there default, then it will give you a long WPA password you can accept that or create your own just keep that one it is more secure than one you create, be very very sure you write it down as it is caps and lower case and put that on the paper under the router. That is the key anyone in your house that wants to get on the wireless will need to enter into their laptop to connect, so that laptop will detect the wireless and then will ask for the password that is the one you just saved so you will enter that into the box and then it should connect if all is correct. On my linksys it asked during the set up if I wanted to print out all that info and yes I did and it also asked if you want to put a text file on your desktop with the info sure let it do that too you can delete it at any time if you no longer need it. Just take it one step at a time do not change anything till you have the cd in the machine and it tells you to. depending on the router you bought you can go to the company website and look up the model number and they all have a pdf manual on line with directions and pictures also. If you tell us which router you got someone might know more specifics of that particular one.

for routers I stick with liksys the only other one I used was a dlink and it was the one that was provided when I had verizon fios, all that I buy are linksys/cisco. If you already have an N router what are you wanting to upgrade? I found this to be a really good article on routers How to Buy a Wireless Router

I used Linksys for years but bought a Zyxel on sale when the Linksys finally died (and I wanted to go with 802.11g). Zyxel isn't as well known now, but they used to be known for high quality dialup modems. Both have been rock solid.

I got a Netgear with my cable access, but I'm not overwhelmed by the coverage I get from it. It's on the first floor and I'm in the basement (next room over) and it disconnects often enough that I can't reliably download a tivo show.

I have had very good usage from my Netgear, which I used when I had WB satellite. I had it on the second floor, and picked up a good signal on the first floor. I was even able to pick up a good signal on the deck and in the front yard. This was the very basic $39 b,g model. I still have it and use it in my setup with my cellular router to extend the coverage area.

Sounds good! Especially the $39. I must admit WB satellite is part of the issue here. I know that. But I also had problems with this linksys router in Pittsburgh connected to Comcast Highspeed. So between the 2 of them it's a nightmare sometimes.

Honestly, I think that if you go with any of the well known names (Linksys, Netgearr, Belkin probably target the home market the most) you'll have comparable results. I think the problems encountered are most often due to external circumstances. For example, in my case, it might work better if I moved it a few feet. As I think about it, I realize that I never had a problem with the Linksys or Zyxel, but my daughter often did and the Netgear is near her computer, so maybe there's a lot of metal between that spot and my office (where the Linksys and Zyxel sat).
