Java update

on my taskbar on the right hand side of my monitor...by the clock, an icon appeared to update Java...I clicked to install and it wants to also install Open Office. I don't want Open Office. I unticked where it said to install Open Office, but the only way Java will update is to install it....or at least I don't see any way around it. How do I get that Java icon out of my taskbar?

See the link, then do a "Google" search for "javaRa" please download and run the program it will remove any older versions and install the latest version for you.

Look in your uninstall programs for Oracle Java or used to be named Sun Java. Or look in your program files off the start menu for them too & should see an uninstaller there. Just uninstall java and forget about it unless you need it .... do you mean in add remove programs? you should only have the latest version located there if that is what you meant, having old versions is a huge risk to your security. Now the newest version will remove the previous version but you do have to remove all the other old versions manually. JavaRA is an excellent little tool that will do all the hard work for you. Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop. (at bottom of this post) * Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program. (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator) * Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java. Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16. you just uncheck where it ask you if you want open office then go on with it, once you uncheck that it will not install open office. Java ra is a good program it will also let you get rid of the old versions you have on the pc which you want to do.

I "did" uncheck that part and it went ahead and started installing Open Office anyway...there was no place to stop it, so I just shut my computer down with the button...I couldn't even shut it down from the start menu. I clicked on the icon finally and I had a choice to close it and I did that and I don't have that icon there anymore. I am using Java 6 and this was for Java 7
