A friend and I are both having the same problem with Windows Movie Maker and I can't figure out what we could be doing wrong...so this is happening with two separate computers...both running XP Professional. We set up our movie with transitions, pictures and music. At the left of the screen there are three steps for making a movie. The last step is to finish the movie and you have some options. We want to save to a CD. When we click on that option, we get the message, "A recordable CD drive was not detected. Would you like to save your movie on your computer hard disk instead?" If we click no...we get the CD burning wizard and the same message. If we click, yes, we can save the movie to our computers, but then when we try to burn it to a CD, we get the same message...any help would be appreciated....we've both been working on this for hours. Remember..same problem...two different computers....

Not to insult you, but are you sure you have a CD burner in your computers and not just a CD ROM? Also, you must put a blank CD-R into the tray to record. If not that, then maybe your CD recorders have bit the dust? It would seem to be coincidence for both of them to go out at the same time. Sorry I can't be of more help. I've only used Movie Maker a couple of times and had no trouble recording to CD at all.

This can be a result of having third-party CD-writing software installed that does not work properly with the CD-writing functionality of Windows XP, or of having a recordable CD that has already been written.

To resolve this issue, try one of the following

If you have an HP DVD+R/+RW DVD writer installed on your computer, the HP Direct Letter Access (DLA) driver might be installed on your computer. You can turn off DLA, which should let you successfully save your movie to a recordable CD.
Â

Verify that the CD was not already written to using a third-party CD-writing program such as Nero. Movie Maker expects a CD to have a Joliet (mode 2) disc format. However, some CD-writing programs write discs using a different format. To solve the problem, insert a new, blank recordable CD. In the future, choose Joliet (mode 2) when originally writing to the CD using third-party CD-writing programs.

CPU usage is at 8-10 percent. I looked at Norton briefly and didn't see any activity going on...how do I go in and exclude a program from it? it is Norton Systemworks basic edition, just renewed (online subscription). I'm on Windows XP. WME has been "encoding the first pass" since last night. I'm assuming I did everything right, since there were no instructions for newbies of WME. I selected my MPG file, selected WMV as the output type, DVD quality for video, and CD quality for audio. The choices did say "VBR" or "CBR" which I didn't know the difference of...so I chose CBR.

Thanks for the suggestions. Definitely like the balloon shade. Still not sure where to put the rod - in the wall above the window trim or inside the window frame like I do my sheer (as does Caroline). You see, I really like a naked window, esp. this tall one. I even hate to see my curtain rod hardware, but need that for the drapery in winter. My Pottery Barn, Alessandra drapes are 108" - still too short. I have an idea, just an idea mind you. What if I made a balloon shade from one of my Alessandra panels? or using both of the panels if I needed more length? The balloon shade could be removed and put back up easily if I chose to do so? or would it have to remain all the time? The panels are pleated at the top tho. I would definitely need a seamstress, I don't sew. I have attached a link to the drape, but my panels are the gold, which is no longer available. Sorry, I didn't see that on FAQ. But..I have used this program numerous times and have been successful. Could DLA have been installed without my knowing it (by accident)? I made several CD's and several DVD's using Movie maker, and when I went to use it today, it wouldn't work....I can't even save it to my computer and put it on a CD from there.

Ah, if you had previously created your movies then my link was of no help to you. We tried, lol.

Darn...this is driving me crazy....In June I made several...both CD's and DVD's..and made copies for everyone...they worked beautifully. Can't you think of "anything" I might be doing wrong?

In troubleshooting, it says: end the Imapi.exe process in Windows Task Manager or restart Windows. I don't "have" Imapi.exe in my Task Manager...does restart Windows mean to restart your computer...I hate to ask dumb questions, but this is a program I really wanted to use throughout the years. Please...if anyone has any suggestions, help me out here....*sigh*

I burn to DVD instead of CD.

I always:

1: Save to my computer
2: Choose "other settings - highest quality video NTSC"

After the movie has been saved I add it to a DVD project using Roxio DVD Creator.

I have found this to be the best way to use Movie Maker.

I have had some issues lately - one problem I think was due to using to many pictures. It worked fine when I used 100 or less - but 300 didn't work.

I have also heard that IE7 can cause some "issues" with Movie Maker. I have IE7 and never had trouble before I installed that - so that may be the case for me.

I've had IE7 right along. The tech who brought my computer to my house didn't advise getting it, but I think we are all going to have it eventually. Up until this, I've had no problems...I think an update must have thrown off that setting. I intend to go to the site you recommend..thank you...hey, I'm from Iowa, too
