everything's going wrong with dvd-rw clips in windows movie maker

I've got some video on a DVD-RW disc that I want to edit in Windows Movie Maker, so I can clip them, lighten them, and optimize them to share via email (to family). (Sony's software lets me clip the videos but that's it.) So I import one into Windows Movie Maker, drag it to the timeline, and WMM crashes. I do a little research and discover it can't handle MPEG-2 files, even with the codecs present. I need to convert them to AVI etc. So I find a bunch of converter programs to try. So far I've tried Stoik and I've tried Digital Media Converter. They both crash when I try to convert one of the MPEG files. I would be happy if I could just optimize my video clips somewhere, and forget about all the other effects, but where? Nothing is working. The clips are too large (MB) as-is to email, even when I trim to 1-2 minutes.
