Top mount sink on soapstone counters
Comments (19)We currently have a, now discountinued, cast iron Kohler sink with a drainboard, and we like the drainboard a lot. So, my initial gut thought had been to look for one with a drainboard. Initially we had been planning to reuse this sink but the rethought that thinking we would be fools to invest that much money in countertops to install an odd-sized sink that could not be replaced if something happened to it. The micro-edge does look lovely and we may yet end up with a stainless (even though I am more of the porcelain look person myself) solely because of some other issues we have with size constraints. We too learned many years ago that you get what you pay for, and an initial larger investment upfront pays off in the long run. Perhaps some of those complaints about disgusting looking stainless sinks were from people with the really low end sinks. Even though I know that the top mount sink came later than the era of my house, I too to seem to prefer them aesthetically. Perhaps it is because of the feeling they evoke of kitchens from a earlier era. It's too bad there isn't something similar to the microedge availabe in cast iron. OTOH, I can definitely also see the idea of thinking of my kitchen as not a period piece but as something that has evolved over the decades and has not been static set in one time. I'm sure the housewife who first coccupied it would have been thrilled to be able to upgrade portions of it to the latest technology like micro egde sinks....See MoreStay away from these counter tops
Comments (228)I would advise you avoid doing business with AZ tile and Dean Jessup specifically. We had a horrible experience with them. Don't expect them to act with integrity or stand behind their product. We used a fabricator that was a personal referral from him. When we had discoloration and fingerprints that wouldn't come off of our Della Terra quartz he informed me I must have "scarred" it by cleaning with a paper towel. ( I called him within an hour of the fabricator leaving). We paid beyond stone to buff it with a cleaner at their recommendation. It mostly resolved the issue although as a result of the buffing the gloss and sheen no longer match our perimeter counters. Best we can figure out the fabricator applied turtle wax or something similar to disguise striations around the sink cutout. Which is why fingerprints couldn't be cleaned off. We still have some smudges. Bottom line rather than try to help us resolve the issue he was hostile and accusatory. He said the fabricator (a friend of his apparently) said it was fine so we must have done something. Do business with them at your own risk....See MoreHelp! Comments (9)"I don't know how much variance there normally is on the sink install- should it be completely flush all around, or are there slight imperfections? There's really just one corner that is completely flush, the rest is "mostly" flush. Should I press to have this fixed, I don't know if it's possibly to fix it with the sink installed? I just did an oval undermount vanity cutout by hand and I'm sure there are "slight" imperfections. If the hole was cut with a CNC machine, there will be none, but the reveal is up to the homeowner discretion. The sink can be reinstalled by abandoning the fixed mechanical fasteners they've probably used and installing it with a Hercules Universal Sink Harness (Braxton Bragg). "Same with the side- do you normally custom- cut the granite to your space or just leave slight variances and cover it with caulk?" The reveal should be the same all the way around. There should be no "covering it with caulk". "Are all the bullnoses made in the same way- will I have the same problem with the granite sticking out too far with a different piece of granite, or did I just get a remnant that doesn't work well with my space?" No, you got an idiot templater. You could have them rip off the right end, but that may knock your sink off center. They could rip off the overhanging left end, reprofile and polish the edge which would not affect the sink center. "Should the granite have been sealed again, I don't think they did any kind of sealer at installation." Insist they bring a quality sealer and seal it in front of you. It will take a minute and a half and .50 worth of sealer. "I'm not wanting to be a difficult customer, not sure if I should insist on starting over or just live with it." You aren't being difficult. I would die of embarrassment if someone posted a picture of my job overhanging a wall like that. Have they no pride?...See Morenicole__
