tub and tiles are in, what paint color to use?

I am in the process of putting everything else in our new bathroom, tub, surround and tile floors are in. We used Polyblend bone grout for the shower surround and plan on using the same grout color for the floor tiles to help tie everything together. The tiles are Avila Blanco from home depot.

The toilet will match the tub, it is from the kohler devonshire line. We are putting in an espresso double vanity from CostCo that has a granite top (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11485911&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC%7C114%7C1240&N=4000382&Mo=67&No=8&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=4304&Ns=P_Price%7C1%7C%7CP_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C) . All fixtures are chrome. We have vanilla colored towels that we would like to keep using, they were our wedding gift.

I cannot for the life of me figure out which color paint to use, the undertones keep throwing me off and we also are trying to keep in consideration of a future installation of a solatube (we have no natural light coming into the bathroom at all now). DH is really wanting me to start on the paint job before we bring the vanity and toilet in the bathroom. I was thinking of somewhere along the lines of BM White Dove.

Any constructive feedback on wall paint color would help!

So if you're thinking White Dove, you want white walls? Whites are so hard and White Dove is a nice one (although there are a billion more.) White Dove will look white in your room.

If you want some more color, spend an hour flipping through the bathroom photos at houzz.com and see if you can find something with a similar color scheme to your tiles, etc. and then see what they did for wall color and whether you like it.

Paint's tough ... no doubt about it. I'm struggling with it for my bathroom too.

Paint was/is my biggest headache too! Would be best if you could wait till the solatube is installed. That's going to make a BIG difference in what the paint looks like (unless you go with the white).

If he wants to protect the tub while tiling, he can always use some tape on it. That plastic should've come off. That's minor, though-- it could always be cut back. The fact that it doesn't sit flush is more of a concern. I literally hate those flange kits, because they're such a pain to get right. But being this guy knew what he was getting into, he should've known not to suggest a flangeless tub in the first place. Let me ask you-- is there a showerhead over this tub, or is this just going to be a "garden" tub? If there's a showerhead, I'd insist on it being redone. If not, I'd let it go.

@jewelisfabulous - ahh, so nice to have a window! I'd like to hang artwork, but I'd be a bit concerned it might fall and damage our new tub! @monicakm_gw - thank you taking the time to attach a photo. What a serene bath tub you have! You just gave me a great idea for the 3 walls that will be bare since we won't be tiling all the way up to the ceiling. A towel rack would look great on the back wall :) 1. Did you mean your tub is 19" in height (from the floor)? 2. If it's not too much trouble, I'd love to see what your faucet for the bath tub looks like!

Another option. I have 80's beige/almond/whatever shower/tub combos in my beach condo. I am having them spray coated white. They're in great shape; I just don't like the color. This is not the site I am using, but it's the same principle: http://www.miraclemethod.com/ Way cheaper than replacing, and I will leave it to the next owner to replace if they want. I don't rent it out, so hopefully it will hold up until I sell down the line 9wnat to get closer to the beach eventually). Not what you asked - sorry!

This long and narrow bathroom reminds me of the one I grew up with in Brooklyn. It had the same problems you are facing. I highly doubt there is a radiator in this bathroom. The OP can comment if it exists or not. The large diameter steam pipe in the corner is a typical set up for bathrooms in old buildings. There is probably one thermostat controlling the heat for the entire building. The apartment above does not get to set its own temperature. How warm you apartment is in the winter is determined by what floor you live on. I agree if this is the only bathroom then it should to have a tub. I am not sure if re-configuring the tub is going to lower the resale value on a $1M+ coop in NYC. Putting up the wall between the tub and the sink makes the shower more functional. But it will make the bathroom look smaller and block some of the light from the window. I still think if you are going to move the tub the something like this one at Home Depot could work. It is 6 inches shorter than a normal tub. You will need 54 inches from stud to stud which may be possible once the plaster and lathe are removed from the walls. You could install the tub 8-10 inches away from the window wall. A shelf could be built between the tub and the wall and covered with tile. That becomes a place to hold your shampoo bottles and soap dish. Most of the steam pipe would still be exposed and will keep the bathroom warm even with the shower curtain closed. The shower head and controls stay on the same wall. This will open the space to put in a 36 - 48 in vanity with a granite counter top and a wider medicine cabinets and better lighting. That will give you ample storage space. Something that was not an issue when this bathroom was laid out 100 years ago. Have you asked any of your neighbors if they have remodeled their bathrooms? It would be helpful to get ideas and see how they dealt with these challenges.

Benjamin Moore Papaya or BM Linen White. Stick to something light until you get your tube.

You could also go to your local paint store and rent a fan deck.

Whites in a room without light will wind up looking somewhat gray. You have a neutral space so you really have lots of options for color. Believe it or not, I did a dark brick red in my small bath without light and it actually made the room look brighter. My shower tile is a light tumbled travertine with a beigy cast to it, and I used a light grout. The floor is a travertine in reds/peaches/grays, etc and I picked up one of the colors from the floor. I know painting a darker color is counter intuitive, but with the light color of your tile and your towels etc, you might be pleasantly surprised.

What colors do you like? Blues? Reds? Greens?

One of the nice things about paint is that it's relatively inexpensive - if you don't like it or the future solatube doesn't flatter it, change it.

Having said that, I'm having doubts about your color scheme. You're describing a white/near-white room and fixtures with one dark element, the vanity. Even the towels are vanilla. Have you found a shower curtain that picks up on that expresso? Dark framed mirrors or wall art? Washcloths? If you have those dark elements somewhere (hopefully not all on the same wall), then you're probably OK going with a soft white on the walls. Choose one that looks good now and change it down the line if it's not so good with the new solatube. As far as choosing the "right" white, see if your paint store has trial size cans and just paint a swath. Failing that, collect up several color strips of the color you might like, cut out the one you want to see from each strip and tape 9 or so color squares to the wall to see what it looks like.

P.S. As long as you're trying out whites, why not make a patch of red or another bold choice and see how it looks on a wall or two? You never know.
