Got my first Christmas catalog - it's Oct 2!

I got a catalog of Christmas decorations from Frontgate today. Gee whiz, can't they wait until at least after Columbus Day or Canadian Thanksgiving? I haven't even bought my Halloween pumpkins yet. Give me a break.

Pam, with Frontgate's prices I would need to start saving my money NOW in order to pay for anything by Christmas.LOL

Forget Halloween pumpkins, decorative ones, it's too late!
I know Pottery Barn has already sold out of their mercury glass pumpkins.

Ani, leaves harbor pest eggs and disease spores. By removing the leaves you open the canes up so they can be sprayed with the Neem or a dormant oil spray. It really has nothing to do with hardiness or root growth, just the general health of the plant. Roses in our local climate start to drop their oldest leaves as a natural growth cycle. By removing the leaves, we're doing what nature is going to do for us anyway. The only spray I use in my garden is one round of Volck's Dormant Oil spray after I prune in January. When using any oil-based spray, the temperature has to be under 60F, including reflected heat coming off block walls, so it can be tough getting even one round sprayed. The dormant oil spray helps to suffocate eggs and spores and should only be sprayed when the roses have no leaves. Because I often have roses from other people's yards come through mine for raffles or trades, I'm also trying to keep a disease called San Jose Scale out of my garden. Some great nurseries to purchase roses from in the metro-Phoenix area are Berridges, 4600 block E Camelback, Bakers, 40th Str & Osborn and Harpers, Hayden, south of Thomas. These aren't the only nurseries, of course, but they're well-known for quality roses and knowledge of rose culture.

Just found I made a $400 error in cheque book some months ago (don't ask why it's taken me that long to confirm it!?) anyway, the error has stayed stable for 3 months, so I figure it's found money. Now weighing whether I can consider it a gift from the hosta gods and use some of it for Naylor Creek order... I'm leaning towards thanking the gods very much and taking advantage of the 20% off and free shipping... I've been incredibly happy with the Naylor Creek Hostas I bought from the Hosta Library Auction this year, so the catalogue is too tempting. Jakki

I have seen them at the San Antonio Home Depots and they are a good growing Rubra grown at a nursery somewhere near the Texas coast. For your best chance to see blooms next year I would start prepping by applying fertilizer at half the dose twice as often or using a time release like Osmacote. We can fertilize up to the end of Sept/early Oct in Texas. Then after that point no fertilizing until April. Agree with Dave. Leave it in the current container until the spring. TGIF!! Another week from hell but now it's over :0) QOD: Saturday running some errands, laundry and some other stuff around the house. Sunday meeting up with DeeMarie at the Oktoberfest!!! Dee, good message about the Halloween candy. I was in the store last night and thought I better get started. Last year I gave out bags of pretzels. I usually buy candy I am not crazy about. If I buy something I like I have to hide it, otherwise it would never make it until Halloween and even then no guarantee it will get given away. Marci, take care of yourself and enjoy that three day weekend. The pumpkin patch sounds like fun. You will like Kohl's - I can usually find what I am looking for there. Zig - glad to see ya! I always put 12 small pumpkins on the posts of my fence. Guess I better go tomorrow before they are gone.

I was at the mall on Thursday and there was no sign of Christmas yet, thank heavens.

Here, Home Depot already has Christmas stuff out. I think they're the earliest. Ugh! It's just too soon.

Oh yea - I forgot Lowe's has all their Christmas stuff out too... I was there for african violet food and buying clearance plants (remember my purslane question a week or more ago?) and they were setting up lighted trees!

Yes, I was at Menard's for a sprayer last week and the Christmas stuff is already up, Halloween things relegated to a small corner of that section and no Thanksgiving anything to be found, as usual.

Ugh. I feel my inner Scrooge coming out...

Pottery Barn catalog I received last week had both Halloween and Christmas stuff displayed. I was in a mall on Saturday (a rare occasion for me) and saw no decorations of any kind, Halloween, Christmas or any other holiday.

In any case, I can't believe it's OCTOBER already!!!

I just received the Napastyle Holiday catalog that's full of things that are not Christmas related, as well as ones that are.
Always love looking at the catalog (and Michael Chiarello, he's so cute and young) order very little but it's not one I get every week, like some of them. I could spend big bucks on things I don't need or have a place for.
