Why can't i do a system restore on my Dell 3100

You might open the Computer Management window and then look in 'Services for 'System Restore.
Then see if it is set as automatic, check the dependencies tab and expand what is there. Think you will see it requires the 'Service named 'RPC' to also be running.

you might also check;

Right click myComputer
Select Properties
You should see a tab for System Restore.

Is it turned on ?

I remember having this happen to me some time back. I still don't know why, but I booted into SafeMode and was able to do the System Restore. You might give that a try and see if it works for you.

do you mean you lost all your restore points or that it is not willing to go back to a restore point? Not sure exactly what you mean. If I remember you use xp please always tell us your windows version as they have different instructions. Here are the instructions for xp How To Use System Restore in Windows XP

it probably has it all stored on a separate partition on the hard drive, you should have been prompted to create your discs as soon as you got the pc. If you have not done that yet I would suggest doing that asap then you will have the discs should you ever need them. That info should be in your information from the manufacturer. But you can just google your model and look it up online. You an also google how to make recovery discs for windows 7 and also how to make an image of your system. yes I did the custom install, and now have FF7.01. Some of the toolbar settings have carried through, most have not...only 3 add ons came through. Do you know of any way to find the list of add ons that I had so I can just hopefully enable them? I sure hate the thought of going through all that again. Things like this are what makes me say I live in the land of "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT." But that would be too easy wouldn't it. thanks for your guidance...

Right click My Computer/ Manage/ Services and Applications/ Services.

System Restore Service should say Started and Automatic.

You didnt mention what operating system you are using, I assume its WinXP or Vista??????

WindowXP. I do use Spybot search and destroy, could i have removed something there ?

When trying System Restore, are you getting a message that says: "Running a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close"?

I called DELL and they told me to do system restore in safe mode and it worked...

Strange.
I have used "system restore" at least ten times - never any true problems.
It is a wonderful tool to have..
With a full Windows XP, the computer brand should not matter - I think..
