Office is converting Excel 2000 files to Excel 2007 - why?

I have my old copy of Office Professional on my new Vista laptop. It works fine. I also have a trial version of Office that came with the computer that has been activated since June. While I don't want to uninstall the trial version because I want to play and see if I like it over time, whenever I open an Excel 2000 file, it converts it instantly to Excel 2007 and then I can't edit it. It didn't always do this - just started doing it this week to my knowledge.

I know I can open the Excel 2000 files in the round about way, but I shouldn't have to. I want to click on it and have it open in with the 2000 version.

Anyone know why this is happening? I do see that I have a conversion file installed for Office 2007 but I don't want to uninstall it in case I need it later. It appears that I can't just close this conversion file so it doesn't convert all older Excel 2000 files to 2007.

This is a PITA especially when a client calls and I need to open his/her old file and make instant changes.

Can anyone help. I hope I explained this okay.

I would try going to your 'My Documents' folder, click on Tools > folder options > file types and scroll down until you find your excel file type and change the program it opens with there.

Note: The trial version is probably past its "free" period. It only is free for so many times of use.
I wouldnt think it advisable to have your Office professional copy and the 2007 trial version both activated on the same laptop

I think I am giving up for today. I have spent hours reading the links, and previous posts that I found in the search for OOo, supposedly installed Works Converter, which I can't find on here, just the installer, but when I open the installer it says it's already installed and all I can do is remove or repair the installation. Guess the only other thing I can do is go back to the old computer and try to convert the files there, then recopy them to this computer, but I'm done for today. Marie, thanks, but that only takes care of the one file, not all my patterns and such that have been typed in, or my trip journals, ect. Thanks for trying to help me. Tami

That is interesting that MS has now started giving away Word and Excel, so far I have heard no complaints over the advertising that is supposed to be there either. I might suggest that those with Office 2010 starter go to Microsoft and download the free Powerpoint Viewer so they can enjoy some excellent Powerpoint shows that pass around in emails.

They should open. Same thing happens with Word. I have 07 on one machine and 03 on the other. Download the compatibility pack and it will convert the 07 files to 03. I save all my 07 documents as 03 and they open on 07. Sometimes I forget to save the 07 docs as 03 and the computer changes it when I open on the other machine.

Anyone considering these boilers should find professional installers who install Energy Kinetics AND other boilers - and can be impartial and unbiased in their advice. Many installers have their favorites based on their own biases, or don't want to admit there is something better out there. I talked with installers from Alaska and Maine who use Energy Kinetics units in their installations. I figure if they are good in those cold states they would be good in PA where I live. I liked the Energy Kinetics design because it has been around for 40 years and the energy saving design does not rely on outdoor resets or very problematic computer controls. EK units use a basic digital energy manager which is not overly complex. Almost all of the parts are standard parts too. Also, steel lasts just as long as cast iron without all the mass to heat up and maintain temperture.

Perhaps this is a good time to make the choice between 2000 and 2007. Another point beyond bob14's suggestion: While in Excel check to see the "save file as" default by using Tools:Options:Transition "Save files as:". If you have previously opened and changed a 2000 file while using 2007, the file may have been automatically saved as 2007. While using 2007 you probably have a choice as to file type.

Thanks everyone, but your suggestions did not work. I guess I'll have to get rid of 2007 trial.
