Excel/Word won't open

I have a 4-month old HP desktop running Windows 7. It came with Excel Starter 2010 and Word Starter 2010. When I imported some XP (with service Pak 3) Word and Excel files from Works 2000 into the new computer, it put them in the starter programs. Both the imported and new files have been working ok.

Today I got messages for both programs that they cannot be opened. I've run the trouble shooting programs, tried restore and cussed a little. Nothing helped.

Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks for any help.

Take a look at this Microsoft link for your information re compatibility mode.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Owbist. I am familiar with the concept of compatibility. Most of that article dealt with checking your open document for its compatibility, etc. I can't even get the program open, never mind checking the documents inside.

I'm also puzzled why something would work for several months then develop a glitch suddenly.

This spring it budded and the buds began to swell but they seem to have gotten stuck and weeks have passed without them opening to leaves. ==>>> i kinda got lost in the words... flowers have petals... do you mean they didnt open the petals ... or do you mean the tree did not leaf out ... if flowers started to develop ... and then failed.. its a frost/freeze issue.. winter irrelevant ... if the buds did not develop at all after winter... its a winter issue .. regardless ... flower failure happens on all flowering plants ... every few years... its ma nature.. not really an indication of the health of the plant ... ask any professional fruit grower ... w/o a pic.. its hard to give you anything specific as to your plant... ken

Uh-oh... Freezer won't open...

OK, an update... The blow dryer method didn't work, it had overheating protection and kept shutting itself off. I removed the door. It still took some doing even after taking off all the screws/bolts. The freezer was almost full of ice/snow. I used some to line a cooler and transferred the food... then took much of the food to a friend's house, she had room in her freezer. Some of the tomatoes had freezer burn so threw them out. A batch of sauce we make still looked excellent so saved it. About 50lbs of deseeded, dejuiced maters in freezer bags that were in a big coated box look great still. If they defrost I'll run them thru the Spremy. It's not like I don't have enough tomatoes on the plants still, which are still flourishing... Now to get her back here later today to get at the 3 screws that go on the bottom of the door... Mark

Thanks for you're feedback. You're right. Sunburn. I also think that moving them from the warm living room onto the deck was too much a a temperature change. Even though the day was really nice. Sun. Scattered clouds. What's interesting is how individual the minis are. The other two roses did just fine. No problems at all. Hardier. I still love my minis and think they are well worth the effort. Lessons learned, here. That's what gardening is all about.

Ask the other person to save it as a Rich Text Format (RTF) document and send again, then you will be all set.

Was it a trial version of Office? Is there a possibility that the trial expired?

@pkponder, some new computers come with a starter version of office which is what the op has. It does everything an average of word or excel would need but not all the bells and whistles. As far as I know it does not expire. My wife's computer came with it and it looked OK to me but I had a newer version of Office for her so installed it.

Office Starter 2010 is not a trial; it is pre-installed by computer manufacture and it will not expire. Office Starter consists of Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 only, reduced functionality versions of Microsoft Word and Excel with advertising.

The best option is to try a repair or reinstall of Office Starter 2010.

That is interesting that MS has now started giving away Word and Excel, so far I have heard no complaints over the advertising that is supposed to be there either.

I might suggest that those with Office 2010 starter go to Microsoft and download the free Powerpoint Viewer so they can enjoy some excellent Powerpoint shows that pass around in emails.

The uninstall did the trick, Zep. Thanks.

At one point I got a numerical error and Googled it. Turns out this is a known flaw with lots of complaints - saw some in French and German. One poster gave a phone number for Microsoft to have them fix it. Since the uninstall worked, I did not pursue that.
