Lost Word document

I'm doing an ongoing transcription project. Recently I "saved" my work and exited Word. I do not know what I really did because when I reopened the document the entire thing was gone! The folder was empty except for the title page. I've lost a bit of work from time to time because of not saving properly, but the original document was intact and I only had to redo a portion. I searched my whole hard drive but could not find the document. Does anyone have any idea what I might have done to cause it to disappear? Is there any possibility of recovering my document short of consulting a professional service?

Have you tried windows text search, with advanced checked. And searched for text using a unique couple of words, or string of words, or one single unique word that would be contained in the saved document ?

Hi, If those suggestions fail to help then, Regarding this error only: Windows keeps telling me Microsoft Word is open In some cases with Windows 7 and Vista. When you try to delete a word document.,you can get a pop up that says, unable to delete because word is open, when in fact it's not. Possible issue / cause: Windows Preview Pane locks files for extended period Vista has a Hotfix for this problem, windows 7 has a work around. That being: Open Explorer, click Organize --> Layout and deselect "Preview Pane" on the view options. Then delete the file or document. Restarting may help the situation too.

I must take issue with snidely's item #2 re automatic Windows updates. A few years back there was a real problem with some HP computers that had AMD processors. This may have been the update for SP3, but my memory can't say for sure. The machines went into an endless reboot loop. My desktop was one of the affected ones, as was my friend's. There was finally a "fix" issued by HP which we were able to employ. My HP laptop, also with an AMD processor, although a different one, was not affected at all. I have also had minor problems with some of the .Net updates, so I always install those separately from other updates. Just my experiences, so one does learn from those not to just blithely set automatic updates. Obviously snidely is not a mother, or he would know that 13 year olds can be very sensitive and sometimes overly dramatic. This has nothing to do with good parenting, so he would best keep remarks about such to himself. I am a great grandmother as well as a former school teacher (12, 13, 14 year olds), so I have seen it all.

If you do not have too many files you could save them as RTF (Rich Text Format) and move them over. RTF files are readable by just about all word processors. Try one first to be sure.

Sorry for the delay. Cablevision is my internet carrier - and I access the internet through Optimum (have phone, tv and on line service with Optimum. When I send and receive emails my address would be: .....@optonline.net. I received an email with an attachment which I opened and I then in turn sent it to Microsoft Word to make some changes - which I did - but then couldn't send it back to my email address and/or to the person who sent it to me Thanks.

How about a Start>Search/Find for .doc and see if the file is listed there?

I've found things by doing what DA said. you can check by approximate date too.

You may be able to recover your file (or an older version) by using an undelete programme.

Ideally you should save any recovered file onto another drive. (This prevents the recovered file from overwriting and corrupting the original one if it tries to use the same place on the drive.)

As a last resort if you haven't got another drive (or USB thumb drive or CD writer) and, providing that you drive isn't too full, then you could just try to recover it to a temporary folder. There is usually a fair chance that you can recover the file.

You are more likely to be able to recover a file if the computer isn't used too often between losing the file and trying to recover it.
