Decision Time: Air Tub or Soaking Tub
Comments (12)I've had my eye on a Toto Clayton tile-in airbath for a while. I can't say they are any better than a kohler or other brand; we just stumbled on it because we'd already bought a toto clayton toilet and thought we might stay in the same line as we redo the bath. As for the step depth, I remember reading about the design work of Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins, who believe that we can defy death through architecture. They believe that houses that are physically challenging to live in are better, and their designs are frankly crazy by any standards we are accustomed to. I rolled my eyes when I first read about their work. One of their designs required crash helmets and hiking boots to tour, and some visitors broke bones. (I couldn't make this up if I tried!). But as bizarre as their designs are (you can check out their website at reversibledestiny.org), it did make me start to wonder, what if our houses required us to move and stretch a little more than they do now? So while I don't want to live in a house where visitors regularly fall and break bones, it seems to me that a navigating a deep step into tub is not asking for that much, especially if you have grab bars in the right places and a non-slip floor next to the tub. I suppose an indigenous hunter-gatherer would roll their eyes at our sedentary coddled lifestyle and think we're crazy to live in a way that allows diabetes and heart disease to become epidemic. So go ahead and get that airbath. Maybe you'll live a little bit longer :-) Here is a link that might be useful: toto clayton airbath....See MoreHelp with soaking tub--deep with long basin
Comments (3)We bought an MTI Harmony which I love. It's very large although a little short of the 47" that you are seeking. These are the specs from tubzlady.com where we found a great deal: MTI Harmony - Elegant style and genteel comfort. General Specifications: 71.25" x 41" x 24" Bathing Well Length: 62" top / 44" bottom Width: 32.75" top / 23.5" bottom Depth at overflow: 21.25" Plumbed Weight: 144 lbs Average Fill: 50 gal to above jet level Maximum Fill: 110 gal to overflow Drop-in Bathtub We went with the whirlpool/airbath combo. I'm not certain if it's available as just a soaker and, if so, if it would be within the budget you want. I found Koren at tubzlady to be very helpful and knowledgable. (I have no affiliation but I've recommended them previously on GW.)...See MoreJapanese-style soaking tub
Comments (3)(oops - hit 'post' too soon) I would most like to get one like I had when I lived in Japan, (solo use, square, acrylic(?)) but don't know how to try and manage that, nor whether the cost would be prohibitive. Do you know how to go about doing this, or finding out if it is feasible? I've found about 5 American manufacturers making deep/deepish soaking tubs. Not sure if I'd be comfortable in the seat/foot well versions, and don't know any way to find someone who has one I could try sitting in. No local showrooms seem to have any of these models, and unfortunately, a trip to Tubz in CA is not possible....See MoreJapanese Soaking Tub
Comments (17)I don't think grab bars would make entry for an elderly person easier or safer. It's difficult enough to lift legs over a standard height bath tub as one's mobility and balance start to decline which is why many people like myself who want to age in place are replacing the bath/shower combos with a larger shower. I have some experience with limited mobility after a hip operation which made lifting my leg over a relatively low tub and retaining balance - even with something to grab onto - to know that I needed to get rid of the tub or be doomed to shower in the small shower in the guest bath eventually. I am not even understanding how a Japanese soaking tub would be comfortable for an elderly person because you are still sitting relatively low on the floor as distinguished from a walk in tub where you walk in and sit on a bench that is the appropriate height for people with mobility issues. I don't know anything about installation of walk in tubs except that one of my neighbors had one installed a few years ago. I live in a high rise with concrete slabs and so there is VERY limited ability to change drains or plumbing. If that tub was able to be retrofitted in our building, I can't imagine that it would be problematic in other situations....See Morejamesk
