Cropping Photos....

Am using Windows Live Photo Galery...but can't crop the photos properly. They looked cropped, but don't stay that way. I cut off part of the pic & heads.

Have Windows 7 & IE.

I just experimented & cropped a pic... over on top right it has a close file button... click it and it says saved. Reopen same pic and is is still cropped.

'Splendid Sansevierias'; the book

here I go stirring this old pot again. i just got the Splendid Sansevieria book by Chahanian for Christmas, and i must say, i am also very disappointed. i read this thread months ago but couldn't relate because i didn't have the book. well, now i can totally relate and agree, it is a terrible book. no offense to the author, who has done so much invaluable work on my favorite genus, but i think the book is almost worthless. and these are the reasons why i think so: 1. it feels like the book was written because people wanted him to write the book, not because he wanted to write the book. 2. COUNTLESS mistakes (spelling, grammar, syntax, you name it) in both introductions and individual descriptions 3. both introductions were written terribly. this book should encourage interest into Sansevierias. but if a true beginner (such as myself, and not Norma, who is obviously not a beginner ;)) reads those introductions, he/she would be discouraged from growing Sans. 4. for the most part, the photos are worthless. the pictures of species in situ don't show ANY details of the plant. what's the point of showing a picture of a plant if it doesn't SHOW the plant? how does it help us ID plants? while specific characteristics (like overall size, crossbanding, number of grooves, size/quantity of flowers) are integral in nailing down the exact species of a plant. if you don't have any idea what species you have, you need descriptive photos to narrow it down and then you can use specific characteristics to definitively ID the plant. and the photos in this book are not very descriptive. 5. an entire book can be written about S. trifasciata and all its cultivars, varieties, sports, unique variegations, etc. this book as exactly one entry for S. trifasciata. i guess it can be argued that that was a strategic decision on the part of the author to not go into depth about such a varied species. but for those of us that bought the book to learn about and ID Sansevierias, information on S. trifasciata is absolutely integral. 6. the price of this book is nearly twice that of Sajeva's Illustrated Dictionay, which has HUNDREDS of high quality photographs (accurate or not). this book is literally one quarter of the size with low quality paper and printing. why does it cost so much more? ok...i am now slowly descending my soap box. again, this post was not intended to insult anyone in any way, just an expression of complete dissatisfaction and disappointment. i collect almost every major genus of succulents, but Sans are my favorite. there are some spectacular haworthia/copiapoa/crassula/etc books out there. why did the Sansevieria one turn out so pathetic? there are many commercial brands available and a few free ones. The one commercial one I highly reccomend, with a combination of low cost and high feature-set is Paint Shop Pro. Both professionals and neophytes alike use it extensively. The best commercial one around is, bar none, Photoshop. It is the main chocie for professional image creation and manipulation. The best free one out there is called Gimp Shop. Full of similar features to both photoshop and paint shop pro. A great choice when money is an issue. They will all do what you want.

The program is saying there are not enough pixels when you're done cropping to print at enough resolution, usually 300 ppi or higher. Although I don't know why it's being so paternalistic, and not letting you print it, even if it will look too zoomed in. That 2592 pixels is only about 8 inches at 300 pixels per inch (printer resolution). You can resample the image in an editing program, but that's the same as zooming in, you'll get a blocky pixelated image if there aren't enough pixels to start with.

I also use Irfanview and love it. It took me forever to figure out how to crop. I was looking for something on the tool bar, when all I had to do was put my cursor in one spot and outline what I wanted to crop. Then I went to Edit and chose, crop selection or cut selection.

Windows Live Photo Gallery (along with a host of others including Picassa and Apple's iPhoto) do what's called "non destructive" editing. The original image is preserved and any editing taking place within the application. So you have your original, unedited photo if you need it. There is also a button in the upper of right of Windows Live Photo Gallery that says something like "revert to orginal" that may help you get back to where you started. Otherwise make a copy of your image file outside of Windows Live Photo Gallery and when you reopen Windows Live Photo Gallery, you'll have another image to work with.

Many of the current photo editors also crop to maintain the aspect ratio of the image. You may have noticed that the cropping tool wants to get, for example, narrower as you make the image shorter. There's usually a way to turn that off, but I don't know where that is in Windows Live Photo Gallery.

I've used Windows Live Photo Gallery and thought it worked pretty well for minor adjustments.

I often use an online version called picnik it is quick and easy.Nothing to install

Thank you all for your suggestions. I cropped 1 pic on Windows Live Photo Gallery, but then I couldn't get it to work again. It seems really easy but I'm not very good at anything on the computer. So guess I will keep trying or find someone that knows that program.

Sharon, I use Windows Live Photo Gallery daily and crop photos very often. I too have Win7. Let me know if I can be of assistant.

Try "photoscape" easy to crop and many other great features...best photo editing software, I've come across bar none!

I just can't seem to get that cropping thing. The Windows Live Photo Gallery looks very easy. Have tried acouple others, but don't like them. Will try to learn WLPG.

I lean towards MK's thinking. After cropping is finished are you saving the "new" project? If so, where?

The application is not permanently changing the foundation (original) picture. Rather, it is creating an modified version to be saved under a new file name.

Great to know that you got it! I use WLPG all the time. Not that I don't have better tools to use, I just prefer WLPG. It's more friendly to use.

Keep in mind that WLPG will automatically save the modified file under the same name. However, you can always revert to the original snapshot. If you don't want this to happen, copy the photo and place it in another folder before modifying it.

The only time that the file will save under a different name but will also retain the original file is when you resize the photo. It will add the new file size at the end of the name.
