firefox instead of explorer and Flash Player

I have an old Dell inspiron 8200 laptop with only 40gig HD and 1 meg memory, win XP sp3 and was using explorer 7 I thought. It kept asking to upgrade to 8 but I was a little worried considering my minimal use and old machine. Actually, as I was looking for a version for this post, it appears to be 8.6001 something; perhaps as recently as this morning.

Today, I was having trouble getting into gardenweb at all. I had to shut down a couple of times. Instead I tried firefox for essentially the first time and got on easily and it ran much faster than my usual experience in garden web. So, i tried other sites with no trouble and was (or am) planning to switch to firefox. On the other hand, I am using Explorer 8 now and it is working although still slower than firefox.

Anyway, while in firefox 5. I went to my online NY Times newspaper and was about to look at a couple of videos but it says I will have to install Flash Player. Well, I have Flash PLayer. Adobe is often telling me to upgrade it for security and I do it. I had thought I was using 10.5 something but when I finally found it in my system folder, it says it is version 11. something. I actually clicked on the NY Times link for instalation to see what would happen and it said to download version 10.3 I think. Well I certainly don't want to backtrack on my flash player. Shouldn't firefox already know I have an existing and newer flash player? What should I do?

get flash with your firefox at adobe ....

Each browser must have its own flash install and you must get, download, install the specific version for the browser you are using. So for firefox use firefox to download the firefox version of flash, install, for IE go with it get the ie version and install. I generally get the flash at filehippo just search for non ie flash on Google.
I would suggest adding the adblock plus add on with the easylist subscription to block the ads which will help speed page load quite a bit.

Definitely make sure that your adobe products as well as java are fully updated and it is essential to remove the old versions just having them on the pc leaves the security issues there.
Go with each browser and update.

Thanks for the responses ! mikie -- Thanks for the links ! I uninstalled, restarted and then installed both versions you linked to. (I also have Comodo Dragon [Chrome] on my computer but rarely use it. We'll see if I still get some sort of error that that browser needs an AFP update.) Btw, when installing for FF I had to close the browser. When installing for IE I was not told to close the browser. Not being an IE user, I don't know if that is a big deal or not. But everything went smoothly. Thanks, mikie ! azinoh -- There are two user accounts on this computer. Mine is not THE admin account, but it does have administrator authority when necessary. I did the update for each browser as you suggested and used mikie's links. :-) esteban -- Although in most cases I do things the way owbist describes above, this time I used the Snipping Tool that comes with Windows 7. I saved the pic to my desktop and clicked "Browse" (next to "Image file to upload" above the composition area). Piece of cake. (Or pumpkin pie, if you prefer.) :-) I have not rebooted since doing these installations, but as far as I can tell my situation is resolved. Thanks for the help! :-)

Indeed there is a way. When the image you want is onscreen simply tap the 'Print Screen' (PRN SCRN sometimes) button. Now open your photo editing program, click Edit, click Paste and you have the full screen visible. On some programs you can right click and paste the image, each has their own peculiarity. Now use your resizing or crop tool to remove the bits you do now want then save the image. If I am saving for wallpaper I always elect to save as bitmap (.bmp) because it is a higher quality image than using .jpg There are free screen capture programs out there that will catch a specific frame but I find that is as easy as anything and I do not need to remember how to work another program.

Thanks for the responses and help. I am not using antivirus and removed the the antivirus before my Adobe problems. I checked/installed updates to Windows and IE. I went to Adobe.com and installed/reinstalled. This morning the issues seem partly fixed. When I am on a web page, such as Yahoo, whether in IE or FF, some of the boxes display and some don't. If I go to a web page page, like Yahoo's tech page, that has mostly boxes that have videos in them, I see the text in the boxes but they are otherwise blank. If I click on the box a video then starts playing. I know this isn't how it's supposed to work, but it's better than it was yesterday. Maybe if I wait till the next Adobe or Windows update it will sort itself out? Thanks for the suggestions. If you think of anything please let me know. I think I will put this laptop away for a week or two and use my Win7 laptop instead. I'll check on updates the next time I get it out and hope for the best.

My hubby said he didn't want Chrome for his browser, so I thought we should check to make sure IE is set as his default browser. Then he tells me he likes Firefox. Fine. I'll install that. Once I get this machine up and running like it should, I want to install Win10 again. We had so many strange problems after installing Win10. First, the Cortana app, it stopped working for me, then the icon disappeared, then the whole name and box left the left side of the taskbar. At the same time, he was using it when he was logged in, and mine was completely gone. Then I lost the use of my mail app, his worked just fine. mine wouldn't open, then his stared to not open also and didn't download his mail when it did. This was over a period of several days. We could only access our mail by going to the ISP mail site and logging in. My calendar lost all of my saved info for dates I wanted to remember. His was fine. I'd rather not have those problems crop up again, if I can do anything to insure it doesn't happen again. Maybe I'm over thinking it, as you say, maybe I'm just trying to be too careful. I was raised on "better safe than sorry" and that works for me. We had so many yelling matches about what was wrong, how did it happen, and I'd just as soon avoid that again, if I can. It was bad enough with the computer problems without adding bad feelings between us, too. Thanks so much for helping me..

mikie, that is almost exactly what my flash player Already is. it is ver 11.3.300.270.

I incorrectly said my flash player was in the system folder. It is in the control panel. I also said I thought I was using explorer 7 but I was confused. I guess explorer 8 was already running for months and it was just telling me (for months)to configure it for my personal use. I haven't done that yet. I thought I was stopping it form upgrading.

Thanks raven and mikie. We are cross posting a couple of times. It obviously wasn't clear to me before, that separate versions of flash would be needed. Seems very unusual. I suppose I will see two Flash Player icons in my control panel. Normally if I saw two equally named icons, I would delete the older named file. Seems like a risky design 'feature'. But anyway mikie NOW it is clear why you gave the link.

There are only two Flash Players, IE and non-IE (everything else). If you save the download and then install you can download with whatever browser you wish. No coordination is necessary.

Is you install directly without saving first you must use the appropriate targeted browser to obtain the appropriate Flash Player.

There will only be one Flash entry on the Control Panel itself, but two in the Program and Features. The non-IE version by self-identification is a plug-in to the Active X IE version.
