Adblock plus and filterset.g

Flashblock too. I think he's selling you a bunch of crap. I don't scan at start-up, never did. I don't like things starting up at start-up.

actually with the brand new adblock plus they are saying not to use filterset g instead when you set it up subscribe to Easylist filters that will take care of it. Filterset g used to be the best but he is not upkeeping it anymore so the author of adblock plus is now suggesting instead the Easylist. Here is some info and for those that do have filterset g you might want to read that he suggest you remove it.

you can go to Tools, add-ons then in your list click on adblock plus and hit preferences to add a subscription to easylist filters.

Avast is always active which is what a good AV should do so it is always basically scanning, in that sense doing scans is redundant which is not always a bad thing.

You may not know this but with Avast you can set the screen saver to do scans, that is a great feature, the lazy way to do it LOL.
To set that up you got to your screen saver settings ( right click on desktop, preferences, screensaver) in the list of screen savers select Avast antivirus, click on configurations to choose other options and the screen saver itself, the one that will be loaded.
To keep from scanning over and over when you set avast as screen saver, click settings box, make sure the loop scanning box is not checked- that way it won't immediately start scanning again when done.
Once the screen saver is running you see a blue rectangular info box on screen which shows the file names and numbers of files being scanned, this blue box will periodically move around the screen.
You can manually start the scan by using the preview option on the screen saver tab of desktop properties.
when you move the mouse or anything that would stop the screensaver it will stop scanning but will resume near that same spot in the list when the screen saver starts again.

Jane, I don't think he knew how to solve the problem so he had to have something to blame it on. The error message was a missing or corrupted file.

Raven I printed off your advice. I did not see a place to subscribe, but there is a list that I have made of the ads. Before the formatting I didn't have one single ad. I will figure it out eventually.

Using Avast to scan at start up is called a Boot Scan. It makes
it harder for viruses to hide because Avast runs before anything
else loads. The virii can't hide as well if they are dormant.

As far as scanning every week with Avast (or any other scanner),
that won't guarantee your computer is not infected.
You can have false negatives as well as false positives.
You need to use another scanner such as one of the free
online scanners to get a second opinion. Don't forget
to do adware and spyware scans as well.

I can't help with the pop ups and other ads.
I don't see them. I use the host file blocking method.

Thanks for the info on filterset.g. I guess I got complacent. I started using it a few years ago and haven't really kept up to date on changes.

ok to subscribe to filter lists on adblock plus go up top to tools then add ons, when your add ons box opens choose adblock plus, once selected then choose preferences. in that box clik on filters, , then on add filter subscriptions, click the link for view all subscriptions, on that page in the list go to easylist, there where it says subscribe easylist click on easylist, that will open up the subscribe box with easylist filled in click ok.

or you can just type in easylist in that subscription box and ok

then you need to do it the other way I described and when the webpage opens that lists all the subscriptions under easylist where it says subscribe easylist click on easylist that will put it in the subscribe box.
and it may be you are typing it wrong it is easylist with no spaces.

raven, my ad on software is different than yours, I don't get a subscription list. I only have a filter window where I can add filters. I have versions:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.16) Gecko/20080702 Firefox/2.0.0.16

when you click on adblock plus in your firefox add ons list, then the preferences button, that should open a new box which would show any filters you have, but up at the very top of that box it says filters, edit , options, help click on the one that says filters, now in the new window click on add filter subscriptions, when that opens the subscription box where you can type the name in, look right below where you type in the name and there is a blue link that says view all subscriptions, click that link, it will open a new webpage go look at that webpage, on that new webpage you will see the list of all filters you can subscribe to, easylist is the top one on the list, in the description of easylist there is a subscribe: easylink which you can click on, click on that and it will take you back to that subscribe box and it will automatically fill in all your info for easylist, including the address for easylist, once that is all filled in just hit ok and it will add it to your adblock plus.

in case you can not get that done this is the actual info you would need to fill in those blanks:
easylist (no spaces)
easylist address: http://easylist.adblockplus.org/adblock_rick752.txt

copy and paste that into the blank.
I have the same version of firefox and if you are using adblock plus everything should be the same for both of us.

Ok got that done. I had not noticed the down arrow. When I clicked on it, then easylist usa, the address space had an address in it. Thanks again for your patience. It seems like I am working with half a brain these days. Getting old is ____, but the alternative is not to good either.
