18-inch dishwasher

I am looking for a 18" DW and can't seem to decide which one to buy. The choices are few: Bosch, GE or Kenmore. Bosch is well-known for its reliability, but it's twice the price of the GE and Kenmore models. Does anyone have any advice or experience with the 18" GE or Kenmore dw's? Is Bosch worth the price difference? Thanks!

brook, I believe the Kenmore is made by GE. My mom has had the GE 18" for about 2 years now and it has been completely trouble free. It's not the quietiest model out there, but it's not the noisiest, either. It seems to do the job pretty well, too. It has a stainless tub and was a pretty good value for the money. HTH

Thanks everybody - you're welcome and I'll post another report some time later in February about our Bosch dishwasher. robert laundry: The European market has very strict requirements as far as energy consumption goes. Every dishwasher (and most other major appliances) carry so called Energy Labels. In order for a dishwasher to achieve an A rating for energy use (very low) the temperatures have to be lowered. At the same time, however, the label also provides information about the DW's cleaning and drying performance. So while the temps have to be lowered - washing and drying times have to be extended in order to achieve an A rating for washing & drying. However, all this applies only to one specific cycle usually called Eco, Save Energy or similar. Other cycles are faster, though.

I had an 18" dishwasher for about 16 years. My old kitchen didn't have a dishwasher and the only way I could have one fit was to get an 18" model. For 2 or 3 people who cook every night it was fine. I rarely put pots/pans in the dishwasher so I could go a couple of days between loads. When I remodeled my kitchen I put in a 24", but in retrospect I would have been fine with another 18". I don't remember the brands, but I think there are only a couple manufacturers that make the 18". Most are just re-branded. I agree with Sara that thin, flat plates are best. After my first 18" died after about 12 years, I had to get new dinnerware to fit properly in the new 18" dishwasher. You will pay more for the 18" than you would for the same dishwasher in a 24" size. If you can afford it, take a look at the Miele 18".

I have the 18" miele -- love it. For everyday I never have an issue with how much it will hold. Like antss says, it is great for plates and glasses, coffee cups, small bowls, etc. If you use lots of big bowls and pots and pans, you will be frustrated. It is a trade off -- I got a row of 12" drawers that I would have been wasted space without the space from the smaller dishwasher. I decided the drawers were more important than washing a few pots and pans and big dishes by hand occaisionally. Like all Miele's the cycle is long but it cleans really well. Also, I love the cutlery tray ... would never go back to a basket.

my sink is in the corner. to the left of that is a set of 18' wide drawers. To the left of that is the dishwasher. The hose runs through some holes at the back of the set of drawers. I think it is important to make sure you are comfortable with wherever it is placed and maybe do a mock-up scenario so you can try it out. For me it is perfect as when i open the dishwasher the top drawer is open for cutlery, the plates are in the shelf above and the glasses are to the right of the sink so yes they do need to be put on the counter first but it is not an issue. Regarding additional plumbing. If you have a basement and the ceiling is accessible the plumbing can come up through the ceiling/floor which may be an option for extra plumbing ( although of course any time the word 'extra' comes into the conversation it means extra $'s (usually multiplied lol)

Miele makes one called the "slimline". Also I think I recall that a salesman told me that Asko makes an 18 inch as well.

We have had the Miele slimline for about a year and love it. It is pricey though -- about the same as the Bosch.

We had an 18" dishwasher (GE) and it did have a problem to look out for. It was totally reliable for the 10 years we had it, but the racks were too narrow to properly hold our fiesta ware plates. I would recommend that you make certain that you will be able to fit your dishes, etc. in it if you have anything but flat, standard plates.
