Dishwasher placement

Does a dishwasher have to be placed near a sink? We really want an 18 inch dishwasher in our bar hutch. We will not have and don't want a bar sink. There is a prep sink across the aisle from it, but there is not room for a dishwasher there. Besides I'm more interested in having the dishwasher at a close proximity to where I store the glasses. This is new construction if it makes a difference.

I wouldn't have thought twice about it until I read another thread that mentioned that the plumbing would be difficult if the dw isn't next to a sink. And they mentioned something about a hose having to go a long way. I guess I just figured the dw would be plumbed with it's own water source and it's own drain.

You can put your dishwasher where ever you want. Of course, the more plumbing work you create, the more it is going to cost you. In new construction, it probably won't be more than a couple hundred bucks, but it really depends on the structure itself. It is certainly going to be more expensive than a normal installation.

Left of my large sink is a pull-put for garbage and recycling. On the right are stacked Dishdrawers. Above is a cabinet where I store dishes and glasses. To the right of all this is the fridge (w/ice & water dispenser). Beyond the fridge is a bar cabinet over a 24" lower cabinet and countertop. Bar/prep sink is in an island opposite all this.

My DW is on an adjacent leg of my U kitchen from the sink, and we don't mind it (in fact, we did it again when we remodeled). But this configuration looks dangerous, as others have said. OP, what's the thinking behind the shallow cabinets around the sink? I would have permanent bruises on my hips if I lived there. It looks like you're trying to center the sink on the window. While I appreciate that desire (assuming that's the reason), it throws off the function way too much, not only with the odd corners, but reducing cabinet and counter space. Where are your range and fridge? Perhaps if you posted a layout, we could help you rearrange things.

Depending upon the appliances, they will not project past the edge of the countertop. Cooktops do not. Panel-ready DWs do not. Some wall ovens do not (Bosch, for example requires a 25" cabinet for flush mounting, but that's under 25.5" which is how much counters stick out. I've had to do a number of small kitchens where every appliance was flush, or as close to it as possible. I would not do this kitchen without a true counter depth fridge, or any appliances that project much, personally. I also made the island on 24"cabinets, which means the top would be 26-27" not 33". If it has nothing on it appliance wise, and is just for storage and a place to have some stools, it does not need to be 30" wide. It could be designed properly for some storage and a stool or two with shallow cabinetry. The proof that this kitchen has worked with an island for this individual homeowner is that there has been one there for 30 years and the homeowner wants another one. I would make it narrower and I think to some extent the homeowner has accommodated to it even though it's tight. But it meets the minimum dimensions, (and would exceed them if it was made narrower), and the homeowner wants it. Personally I do not like moveable carts, if they are light enough to be portable, half the time they are off kilter and if they are heavy enough to stay put they might as well be stuck to the floor anyway. Plus a kitchen like this is tight enough that it's a real PITA to clean under something or retrieve something from under something that is not sealed to the floor.

I'll just echo and say to stay away from the corner sink. I'd stay away from a corner cabinet, altogether. I like MiHelene and Mama's layouts. The location of the dishwasher in your plans is awkward and requires a lot of turning when loading. You want to keep "point of use" in mind throughout arranging the workflow and minimize steps to accomplish a task. Is that a bi-fold door on the powder room? Can you change it to a pocket door if you don't have the swing for a standard door?

@wdccruise I hadn't thought of standing in front of the trash. I am not sure that would work well for me personally, but I can see how it would for many people. As for scraping into the sink (which I don't normally do anyways), I'd rather scrape right into the disposal instead of into a random part of the sink and then move the stuff in the sink 50+ inches to get it to the disposal. As for the accessories, I am looking at a workstation sink, where I'll have a drying rack, cutting board, etc. If those are on the left, and I'm scraping directly into the drain on the RHS, then I'd be moving the dishes over those accessories. Of course, if I slide the accessories to the right a bit and scrape into a random sink location as you proposed, I wouldn't have this problem.

The only thing affecting the placement of a dishwasher is the placement of water feeds and outlet

my sink is in the corner.
to the left of that is a set of 18' wide drawers. To the left of that is the dishwasher.
The hose runs through some holes at the back of the set of drawers.
I think it is important to make sure you are comfortable with wherever it is placed and maybe do a mock-up scenario so you can try it out.
For me it is perfect as when i open the dishwasher the top drawer is open for cutlery, the plates are in the shelf above and the glasses are to the right of the sink so yes they do need to be put on the counter first but it is not an issue.

Regarding additional plumbing. If you have a basement and the ceiling is accessible the plumbing can come up through the ceiling/floor which may be an option for extra plumbing
( although of course any time the word 'extra' comes into the conversation it means extra $'s (usually multiplied lol)

I just reread your post (thought there was a problem with my post) and realised that you are not having a sink at t he bar, so my thought says if you were going to have plumbing there for a sink, what is the difference? although of course you might have only had cold water. Still.......
