Wow, so much to think about...will have to check into that 12 step program. I was thinking of doing like some parents do, and that is to set a timer and only allow myself so much time...yeah right...can't really see that happening anytime soon.

I already am a pretty fast typist, even though it is just 2 fingers....have thought of taking a typing speed test to see just how fast I really am.

I was thinking of maybe never shutting it off, so then I won't have to wait for it to boot up, and won't ever be paying bills on line...they all get paid automatically from my bank account.

I'm thinking it will allow more time in the garden, or at the lake, since I don't have a pool.

How often should I log off, or turn off computer? I was thinking maybe once a week, when I am gone for overnight?
What do other high speed users do?

I always log off when I walk away, but I don't turn the computer off. Somehow I feel safer when I at least, log off.
Sue, now you have to get a laptop and router. Then you can stay online in the garden, look up flowers, trees, bugs, etc.

Our wireless really changed things for us. My husband used to go to work at least once a weekend to 'check eMail, work with some files, fix his class web page, see if students eMailed him questions about an exam,' etc.

He wasn't too sure about the wireless. When he realized he could do all that stuff from home, check in with his kids from out on the deck while watching birds in the orchard ...well it was just fun to see the little light go on in his eyes, you know? That magical moment when they really 'get' it? :)

Sad thing is, when you realize how fast and cool it is, you find so many more reasons to use it!

We both use Firefox web browser with Adblock. They also have a program that will send you a list of 'blocks' to augment the one you create. It's free too!

The Broadband wireless is the term used by the ISP I will be getting. I'm assuming I will still be wired to the wall though...not sure now.

Hmmmm, if I'm not (wired to the wall) I may just have to think about a laptop...would be great for surfing while on the porch, birding. I'll know more Thurs I guess.

I'm hoping I won't find more uses than I already have. I've been thinking of opening a small accout on line with Scottrade, (discount brokerage service) but fear I might become an addicted 'day trader'.

I already use Opera, and 'love' it...compared to IE. Will have to check out Firefox too, since it won't take hours to download.

I'm also thinking of G-mail, if someone will give me an invitation....hint, hint...

Well the installers left a bit ago. They measured the signal off of the new tower that they had thought would work.

Because of trees in my front yard woods (and possibly other trees beyond that), it would require setting a 50 ft pole,(next to the house, or else have the drop in the air, as they don't bury service) with a 20 ft pipe on the top of that, and a cost of a little over $500.

Well, it just isn't going to happen anytime soon...due to having the pole beside the house, and the cost.

There is a possibility that if enough of us in the area still cannot get service, then the company will do whatever it takes to provide service....but we're probably talking years on down the road.

Another possibility, is that the electric cooperative, is experimenting with providing service to us in the boonies. That too looks like it is a ways down the road though.

I'm so disappointed...but will try and remember Good things come to those who wait.

Thank you both, I came looking for sympathy, and got it here.

I just checked again with DirectTv and DishTV and it is $400 (after rebates) to go with Dish, but there wouldn't be any humongous pole set. On the other hand, I have heard bad things of the services (getting cut off during storms, and NO servise in hard rains or when there is snow buildup on the dish). That translates to having a ladder permanently next to the house during snowy months...lol...which I may do anyway, since I just got Dish TV recently. Also Dish ISP is $60 versus $30 for the local company.

I think I'm gonna go make fudge as I have the cocoa, sugar, milk, etc.

And most of the reports just were not good. I guess I will stick with dial-up until the local company puts up yet another tower (or they said something about a repeater), or until my Electric Cooperative gets it up and running.

Then too I can hope that maybe Cable tv will get lines strung clear out here, and that then would be an option.

Thank goodness I have Opera for a browser, and an accelerator with Earthlink, and Pagoo for an answering machine.

In the mean time I will just be thankful to have a good computer, dial-up connection, great Dell Support, and of course all the wonderful folks here who have helped me so much.

Well, since I have no other choice where I live for anything faster than my 26.4 dialup, I like it. Yes, I had some problems at first, and the first of this month a fiber optic cable in Laredo, TX (where my gateway is located) was cut by a highway construction crew and the whole east was affected for up to 2 days, but other than that I have liked it. I also read negative comments about cable and dsl. Of course, if either of those or wireless were available to me, that's the route I'd take. But satellite is better than dialup, by far.

When you live in the country, you have to weigh the advantages of country living against the conveniences you'd have in town or the 'burbs.

Oh, I didn't realize you had it yourself. I'm glad you are pleased with it.

If it goes out, do they charge a repair call, or do you have to buy parts if needed, or do you have extra insurance (with them) to guard against repair charges?

I guess my dial-up really isn't all that bad, compared to the speeds some have on it. It is dependable, and I always have 40Kbps, never get a busy, so I really can't complain.

I was looking forward to getting it so I could download the Opera 5.2 so the post appearing to be read thing would go away. As it is, some will show when there are new posts, but most don't.

I'm with you, and will take country living any day.

While I was outside yesterday, a local electric service truck stopped to talk to me. It was the original fella who had talked to me long ago about possibly putting a tower on my property (and I was not interested).

He asked if I was aware of the new tower that had gone up, and also if I was still interested in their Broadband wireless.

I told him of the installation appointment disappointment (see above), and his reply was that they (the installers) probably had a small cherry picker, and he thought he might be able to make it work...at least for a lot less. I explained I was NOT interested at all at this time, if it required a 50ft pole beside the house.

He said he will call me next week, to make an appointment to check things out further. Maybe they are on commission, and he will find an economical installation way.

Woohoo! My hopes are up once again.
