Viking vs GE Profile Fridge Recommendations

We meet with our kitchen designer in the a.m. to review appliance decisions. Feel great about deciding on a BlueStar range but have the willies over selecting a fridge. Have narrowed the choices down to the Viking Professional Integrated (VCBB536/VIBB536)and GE Profile 24.6 CU Ft Side by Side fridge (PSDS5YGXSS). Looking for greatest capacity, especially for produce, in a 36 inch counter-depth fridge. Not sure if Viking fridges have a good track record or if built-ins are built to last but I found what appears to be a great deal so Viking made it onto my final list. And not sure if this GE model falls under "worst reliability" rating GE fridges were accorded by ConsumerReports. Would love to hear from anyone who has had experience with either of these units.

I would go with at least a 42 inch wide model, we went with a 48" and even though we are older and only 2 of us, I'm sure glad we did.

I was a bit surprised to see GE at the bottom, (They replaced SZ). I'm sure you noticed what #1 was, and has been since 2005?

Ours has lived up to it's position on CR, nary a problem.
Well lit, love the different temp zones and how easy it is to change the filter and vacuum the condensor (once a year)---not 4 times, like the manual in the expensive competitors recommends.

Ours has the Variable Speed Compressor, and I can tell you, that thing is QUIET----I still can't tell when it is running----that can be a disadvantage thou----I have an Elux wine fridge, and I can hear it running---when it starts to run more often and longer, I know it is time to clean the filter-----The JA gives me no such messages so I gotta remember to clean it--alto the filter for the ice maker hasta be changed once a year , and a lite comes on to tell you to change it--and I clean the condensor at the same time---so I guess , Not a problem.

The only reason I can't "Heartily endorse" the Jenn-air is that now they are "Price Fixed", I bought my 48" "built in"
(Note Purest, I did not say "Integrated") in 2005 for $4588, you will pay more than that for probably a 36" and that "Bugs Me" (a 42" for sure will be more than $4558).

There was a post on here that claims "ALL Whirlpool built Fridges now use the Variable Speed Compressor"--yet another poster I consider "Knowledgible" says only Jenn-air. If all the Whirlpools have the Variable Speed Compressor, then I would look at the Kitchen Aid and other Whirlpool Fridges as they are less expensive and you may be able to "Deal", but Make sure!!! It has that compressor as we keep getting "Mixed Signals" Here!

We have the GE Side by Side . Largest counter depth that we could find that would fit our needs. Have not had any problems . Got a great rebate deal on multi Profile purchases.

This is our third GE Frig and we really haven't had any more then normal repairs over the years.

I don't see anybody jumping in, so maybe I can help get a conversation started for you. GE had pretty significant reliability and parts problems with its fridges when it started contracting out (outsourcing), but it has brought much of its production back to the US a few years ago. CR's survey data shows that GE is now no less (and no more) reliable than most other brands of SxS models. In our area, GE also cut back on the number of dealers it works with and seems to be concentrating on the highest-volume retailers and big-box stores. Some friends bought one of the large new GE SxS models a month or so ago -- I think it is the one rated for 29 cut. ft. -- and say they are very pleased with its features and capacity. Something to else to bear in mind is that rated capacity is often overstated. Supposedly 25 to 28 cu. ft. SxS fridges sometimes turn out to have no more than 18 cu. ft. of actual capacity. Capacity is affected by the size of the through-the-door ice and water dispensers and some of the larger capacity models have two ice makers. If memory serves, CR rated the Whirlpool and Samsung SxS models as having more usable capacity than other brands with similar capacity claims. Samsung models have separate evaporators for the freezer and fridge compartments. Not the same as having completely separate compressors and cooling systems (ala Sub Zero) but still something of a marketing leg up because of the theoretical advantages. When I was fridge shopping, it seemed that the jury was still out on whether the separate evaporators made much practical difference. Doesn't the biggest Samsung SxS have an external display screen that connects to the internet or you smart phone or displays photos or something? Strikes me one more thing to fail. cascade to other circuitry and interfere with the primary functions. FWIW, some friend have had a Samsung 26 cu. ft. As I understand, it may be a spin-off and not outright sell but in either case, as has happened with their small appliance division years ago, whom ever would purchase could use the GE brand name for 10 or so years. Parts would be available and service would continue. Hotpoint sold years ago and lasted many years after as the same brand.

Last year we built a new home and went with the Monogram. I wanted the handles, gas stove and the 240 Advantium. We are now currently building our 2nd new home, but I am preferring the Profile's handles this time.. and just don't feel the price difference is worth it, since I have been told that they really are identical, except for exterior features and price.
