Commercial Range Clearance Question

I've read the FAQ thread on the pros and cons of a commercial range in a residential household.

In the Wolf installation instructions, they call for 10" of clearance between the side of the range and any combustible materials. Is this because the sides of the range/oven get hot or because the flames from the burner can/will extend wider than the perimeter of the range?
