what software/scanner do I need to get?

I need to scan a document onto my computer and alter some of the information on it without having to recreate the document from scratch. Then I need to print it. Do scanners come with software to let you do this? Or do I need to do something special? Thanks!

Many of today's scanners include the software required to edit scanned documents. This software is called OCR, Optical Character Recognition. Like most other things, some brands work better than others. I recommend you review the product carefully before buying to confirm it suits your need.

Good to know. Thank you very much. I've never shopped for a scanner before, what should I expect to spend on one?

Most of the branches were damaged by the frost in January this year and I was very upset. Because I had to cut off all the damaged tips. But guess what happen? Multiple branches( 3 - 6) developed from each branch in the spring. It does not look they will have any flowers this year but I am sure they will next year. My trees got so full this year. FYI

Most programs have idiosyncrasies. The features you hate are the ones others love and vice-versa. Sometimes the choice is a compromise or the pick of the lesser of evils. I agree with the others, there are loads of free alternatives to the Windows offerings. Try 'em, you'll find one or more you'll like better. But as with any MS supplied component, leave it alone. You can associate file types with any new program(s) you prefer and you'll never see the old stuff you don't like again.

I don't use Outlook so all I can offer is something that may help. At first it seems a strange place to look but I've found helpful how-to videos on a lot of subjects on youtube.com. I typed 'business contact manager' in the youtube search bar and got a lot of hits. You might want to look through them and see if you find anything that helps.

Hi fuddyduddy I really can't help but didn't want you to feel ignored. Maybe your scanner has lost the file it used for the drivers - try reinstalling the scanner software with your fingers and toes crossed and hopefully this will resolve any conflicts. You could try posting at the computer forum - the clever folks over there might be able to help more. Sue

You can get a good, namebrand scanner for under $100, especially if you shop online (my favorite for the best prices is usually Buy.com).

As for the OCR software, be aware that you will have to go through the scanned document file and proof it because it's usually not perfect.

I bought a refurbished Epson Perfection directly from Epson for $79, and it does a good job on documents. It also scans negatives and slides, which is a bonus. I also found out that Epson has drivers for it so that it will work with Vista as well as XP. You might take a look at their site and see what's available.

I have two Canon Printer/scanners. Both Pixma models (approx $120.00). They came with OmniPage SE free. This is an optical scanning software which is so easy to use. I use this heavily in my work (medical insurance). It scans documents into Word, where you can edit. Or you can edit right in the software itself.

I love this software. I believe it comes with every Canon Printer/scanner.
