Mouse not scrolling problem.

The good old Logitech Trackball scrolling wheel no longer works on my 18 month old fairly powerful system Microsoft XP..

All else is functioning....

I guess I could unplug it and see if the scroll wheel does anything using an Ohm-meter....

If I need a new mouse, I would buy another Track-Ball - I do not see how this design can be improved - at least for a right handed man.

The lefties are out of luck - which is not right..

I presume re-booting didn't fix it, so go into Control Panel and look at the mouse settings. If all seems normal, you could go to your Device Manager and see if there are any warning flags for it. Even if there aren't, uninstall the driver, then re-boot to have it reinstalled automatically, or reinstall it manually if that doesn't occur (have a spare mouse handy to plug in for this purpose). You also may want to access the ball and see if any fuzz is obstructing it.

Everything that is previously shared is sound advise. However, before you do battle with your system may I recommend that you just push down on your scroll wheel. Many scroll mouses (mice?) can deactivate/activate the scroll feature by "clicking" on the wheel. A user can just by the weight of their finger at times click the wheel with out even knowing it. Unfortunately I seem to do it all the time.

Are you using your mouse on a shiny surface? Have encountered completely erratic behavior for some mice that way. Put a piece of paper underneath and see if it stabilizes. Are the drivers completely up to date? Have you tried another port if it's usb? Finally, is it connected usb and ps/2? Try only usb. Those are some of the issues I encounter regularly with wireless.

The scrolling feature normally is herky-jerky until after the full page has loaded. If you have a slow internet connection such as dial-up, that can be a bothersome problem. Years go, web developers were more kind to dial-ups, but as time passed, the graphic content and ads increased until many webmasters began to program as though everyone had unlimited speed. There is a second hidden feature: the way the internet servers are programmed to operate. The system can tell when it has connected to a slow speed customer and will reduce the amount of time slices allocated to that user, the thinking being that it will be able to keep up and thereby can pass more bits total by giving more play the faster connections. It doesn't always work out that way when the system gets busy; The faster connections gets the lion's share and the dial-up service becomes slower than normal.

What type of Mouse is it, Ball, Optical or Laser? If it's an Optical or Laser, you may try cleaning the lens on the bottom of the mouse. BTW, Yes Rechargeable Batteries do go bad and need replaced, but to me it doesn't sound like the batteries. If by some chance you have a mouse with a Ball in the bottom (Old Style Mouse), there are 3 Rollers inside that may need cleaning.

Maybe I should do a "system restore".
Many problems.
On this site I have to log in every time I visit ..Sometime is wrong someplace.. , and has been ever since Spike has sold the Garden Web to someone.
The spell check, however good it is can also be a PITA..
The mouse was filthy. I removed the base and did some cleaning....But still the scroll is a no go...

On this site I have to log in every time I visit .

Is your personal info maybe being deleted automatically each time you log off the computer? Are you able to stay logged in at other sites?

How long have you had your trackball? Logitech guarantees their trackballs for five years. I had trouble with mine, contacted them, tried the fixes they recommended and when they didn't work, they sent me a new one at their expense.

I took the old one apart (since they didn't want it) and discovered the contacts were dirty. I now use a dust remover spray and dust out the front of the ball and back. Working great now.

Of this I am not sure.
Other sites are OK, up to 3 to 4 years ago this one was alright as well, now, as I am to understand, Spike no longer runs it..

The good news is that I pulled the scroll wheel and cleaned it - it was rather dirty.
A mini but true vacuum would be nice for these delicate chores.

The Logitech Trackball of mine is 5 to 7 years old, only the monitor is older in this system..
