needing help w/lap top

We are using our lap top at this location and somehow I messed up and DH can't figure out how to fix it. Problem is when I attempt to copy crossword puzzles etc from our home newspaper the grid prints as it should but none of the clues or numbers in the grid are legible. I have no idea what I did but it is not the printer as anything else will print as it should. DH thinks it must be something within the computer.

Hope some one can offer a solution as we miss working our puzzles.

Well if we had the web address of the paper in question we might look to see if there is something amiss - or how you are doing it when things work alright.

Sorry, I don't know much about this, I rely on DH to help me out of jams but he cannot fix this.

I get to the puzzles by clicking on Entertainment and then down to puzzles & games. We are home subscribers to this paper but are temporarily out of state. Have been able to print these puzzles until just recently maybe when printer said it was low on ink. DH replaced the cartridge & this is when it first happened. So I bought another cartridge and the same thing still occurred. DH doesn't think the fault lies with the printer as we can print other things. I have just now emailed paper to see if there is a reason now that I cannot copy them.

I'm not an expert but like astrl said you need to cut off the damaged portion. Cut it back till you get to healthy white tissue with latex seeping. Dust the cut end with a fungicide and allow it to dry. Some people recommend sealing the cut with latex caulk. Good luck. From the pic it looks like there's a good amount of healthy stem left.

Interesting that someone considers Macs better value for money, because here in Europe I find that I can get a lot more of everything for my money with IBM compatible hardware. I can get a faster processor, more ram, bigger hard drive, and I have a much greater choice of manufacturers and suppliers. I like the choices and there is more potential for money savings when there is such a wide market. Anyway, prices aside, there has always been this debate between Macs and PCs, but the comparison can be very misleading. It's as if you can have a Mac box or a Windows box on your desk. People talk far more about the software than they do the hardware. To the average computer user what happens inside the box under the monitor isn't a big deal, provided it happens fast and reliably. That's why I like IBM compatible hardware. The x86 processor is also the one which has the biggest selection of compatible software. This is why it's so misleading to treat IBM compatibles as windows boxes when compairing them to Macs. I have an IBM compatible computer and I do not run any MS software on it. I could if I felt the need, but considering the vast selection of good software out there I don't. I mostly use linux, although the number of operating systems for x86 computers is huge. I also, ironically, find that the supplied media programs with linux such as open office are more compatible with windows files than windows ever has been. I can read files from any variant MS office, while windows XP complains the file type from older versions is not supported and simply refuses to open them. And when I save a file I get a vast range of choices, in fact I can save it in any number of native formats as well as other computer formats, including MS formats for sharing with other people - and I can even choose which edition of MS office standard to use so that I can share files with older computers. XP doesn't offer that, and it's an actual MS product. I like x86 computers best because they can run almost any program you want and access nearly any data you could want to read. A Mac that can be a Mac or run windows isn't that exiting really, in fact most Mac programs are available for windows anyway and the windows versions tend to be a lot cheaper. I don't like having to re-start in different modes either, I find that with time you get more dependant on one mode than the other. And constantly wish you could instantly access a bit of data from a file in the other OS, or quickly run a specific program which would do exactly what you want if only it didn't mean dropping everything you're doing and re-booting. I would bet anything that within 6 months most Mac users have pretty much ended up exclusively using just one OS. I like seamless stuff and I find I can run emulators much more seamlessly on my IBM compatible, even to the point where I forget what programs are native to linux and which ones aren't.

Hi! Thank you for the input! The vinyl siding company is going to have to replace all of the warped wood to smooth out the surface. I will mention the Board and Battan option to my contractor, but I think that is a higher price for instillation and will not be financially realistic for us. I live in FL close to the Gulf and yes, the houses in the area are all pretty plan Jane, but some do have fun bright colors - which is typical in my area. I'm wanting to use more than one vinyl siding color to add a little creativity to the house. We will probably be here another 10 years. I am thinking to use earth tone colors and/or/with greys and a pop of color for the door. Nothing tooooo wild, but a little less plan Jane. We have to keep the same windows because OMG replacing those is too expensive. Our neighborhood can handle creativity, it's not a deed restricted community and all the houses are different. I thought dutch lap was all the same design? The brand is Kaycan and the style is Timberlake. There are a lot of color options, all of the softer side - no bright outrageous colors. Here is a picture of a house I found that I think is awesome, don't know if we can go this creative but I love how there are different colors used for each section (and different textures). I would add different textures if the price of that material doesn't exceed the Kaycan Timberlake material that we are using. Sorry for the double picture, can't figure out how to delete one of them.

If the puzzle looks correct on the website try cntl + P keys together when you bring it up...see how that prints..mine prints ok here

Right-clicking that crossword and selecting "View Image"(in Firefox, not sure about IE) gets me to this: {{gwi:1487972}}

I doubt that will help you with your print problem but may give you something less cluttered to print once you do get printing properly.

How about trying another site that offers the New York Times Crossword and see if it will print for you. The Seattle Times also offers the New York Times Crossword by Will Shortz, the same fellow who does them on your Arkansas paper.

On the Seattle Times page, click on the printer icon.

On the next "page" select "puzzle with blank diagram" (it may already be selected).

Click "OK"

The puzzle should appear. Click on the printer icon.

If the puzzle doesn't appear, then you probably don't have a PDF viewer installed on your computer. It's worth a try, however, especially if it works for you.

If genes or chuggerguy's ideas are no help try this.

Bring up your crossword
Click Print Screen or PRN SCRN which is next to your F12 button
Click Start
Click Accessories
Click Paint and the paint program opens (or a better photo editor if you have one)
Click Paste (or Edit/Paste depending on the version of Paint you have
Click Crop and drag a rectangle around the crossword
RIGHT click inside the rectangle and click Crop in the pop up
Hold down the CTRL button and tap P as genes noted and your printer should appear.

genes, that did not change the outcome. Am printing all responses and will give them to DH & will see what he can do with these suggestions. If this fails we will have to call someone to fix this. Thanks, all of you.

If this just happened in past couple days, you probably can use windows built in system restore, and choose a date when it worked ok.

Probably too easy to fix things with a restore point when we first see a problem, so for some reason we don't think about that.

DH has tried all the above suggestions and still cannot get a legible copy of the puzzles. Tomorrow we will be off to have it checked out.
