Monitor Flickering...

I have a 6 year old Dell desktop computer with a flat screen monitor with Windows XP that I just love. The other day we had a bump on the line & the computer went down & when the power came back on I re-started the computer & had no problems with the computer till about 4 hours later. After supper when I checked for emails, I found the monitor flickering & not coming on at all. I shut everything down, unplugged things for a while & when I restarted, it was still flickering. I did briefly see a white screen with a blue triangle with an explanation point in the triangle. I couldn't read the message next to the triangle...too much flickering! Does anyone know what I should do to resolve my problem??? I do have a laptop that I use, but, would like to get other things off the desktop if I could. Help!

The first thing to do is decide if this is the computer or monitor at fault. Do you have another monitor you can hook up to the computer to try?

Your laptop probably has a video plug so you could try connecting the monitor to the laptop to see if it is good perhaps.

The model number of the Dell might help someone with a suggestion too.

If the monitor has a degauss button or maybe a menu with a degauss option, I'd try that.

One of my old computers, that has no case cover on it... i always have to reset one of the cards that has come loose from flexing the case while moving it around, or one of the hard drive cable connectors has loosened or pop the CMOS battery in and out before it will boot the first time after a long hiatus. There's always something that fixes it that you usually can't tell what it was. Its the win 98 original edition that has had many motherboard/cpu combo's in it.. last one was AMD 450, I think. Actually for browsing and downloading its just as fast as anything,, maybe faster as it has an expensive video card(for its day) and nice fast hard drive. Web pages/graphics paint instantly.

Shaddy, if you can get a faster computer and have the tech put XP on it, I think you'd be very happy. Since I don't have or intend to go to Vista anytime soon, I can't say anything about that. I find XP to be so much more stable than Windows 98 was, and all my old programs that I used with 98 work on XP. If your computer activities are just those things you mention, then XP is fine. I doubt it would cost you any more to have XP than to have 98, and since MS no longer supports 98 with security updates, I would NEVER buy a new machine with 98 on it. As far as the monitor, I have no idea what the problem is, but you would definitely enjoy a nice large LCD monitor, and it would be light weight and not take up all that space that a CRT does (I'm assuming a monitor circa 1999 is a CRT).

Not familiar with this brand. Is this a 'computer', 'tv' or 'dvd' monitor. If it's a computer monitor, it needs the computer to drive the monitor. MOST monitor problems have defective filter capacitors. You may be able to 'see' some of the bad filters, as they MAY have a bulged top. Another common problem is defective solder conntections. I can't help you with any info about monitors and Lyme Disease but I've been a computer professional for 40 years. I'm certainly picky about being able to see what I'm doing since I'm clearly not young and spend 60-70 hours a week working on monitors. My first monitors were printers with keyboards attached as the punch cards were just going away. Consumer monitors like the ones you bought are pretty much made for consumer activities such as watching movies and viewing pictures. They are part TV and part computer monitor. I don't know how people stand them for serious work on text, particularly with black text on a white background. Actual televisions hooked up to a computer are great for a group of people looking a pictures from your travels but are just horrible for this type of work. Over the years, I've frequently needed a monitor on a weekend where the only choices were Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, etc. Basically nothing they have is acceptable for serious use. I'd suggest you contact someone that deals with real computer systems and have them setup something for you to look at. My personal opinion of Viewsonic was good about the time that CRT were the norm and was impressed with some of their early LCDs. My opinion of the company is poor for at least 10 years. Another problem I see with consumer monitors is the short height, for example 1920x1080 resolution in a 27" vs 1920x1200 in a business 24". When I work seriously on a long document with lots of reorganization and edits, I use a 1920x1200 24" turned portrait. also you might check in the event viewer for any yellow or red flagged items in any of the categories, if you find any you can double click the item in the list to get more info and code info which can be googled.
Control Panel> administrative tools> event viewer.

Mine did that once and when I checked the settings on the monitor by right clicking desktop, properties then the monitor section some how the settings had changed.
You could try a simple system restore to the day before this happened and see if restoring all your settings would fix it. That would be my first step

What is a degauss button or option? I never heard of that before?

If your monitor is anything like my Dell monitor, it does not have a degauss button. I have looked through all my literature on mine, and find nothing related to it, although, if you have the row of buttons on the bottom right hand side, you might try button 2, which is the OSD menu, and see if there is an option on there, if you can get anything at all to come up. I would follow the advice above first and hook the monitor to your laptop and see if it works there. Are you sure the problem is the monitor itself, and not the computer? Do you hear the computer booting up etc. Good Luck

Oh, and also if you do find an option to degauss, so you wont be scared, when it jiggles and jaggles and looks like it might explode, that is perfectly normal.

Yes, I do hear the computer starting up; the greeting & the musical sounds. So, then it must be the monitor & not the computer itself! At one point between flickers, I saw my start up screen, but, the flickering continues..... I will try the OSD button to see what happens. Thanks!

have you tried a system restore to see if your settings were messed up?
I would also try unplugging and plugging on both ends of the cord and remember cords do go bad try a different cord, check the power cord also.
Do you by any chance have speakers sitting very close to your monitor? if so try moving them away. Anything with magnets in them can affect monitors to some degree.

What kind of flickering is it doing? Could the refresh rate have changed somehow when the power went down?

dont think flat screens get gauss ,,, but it does sound like screen resolution or refresh rate reset to something the monitor cant handle.

yep which should fix if the system restore was ever tried, back to the time before that happened. Have had that happen.

Yes, I have unplugged everyting & re-plugged it all back to where it should be. I haven't tried the system restore yet. This is where I'm at now.... we found another old huge monitor & got it hooked up & it works just fine! Wonderful picture! But hate the size of that monster! So the problem must be in the flat screen monitor, right? Are they repairable??? The white screen with the blue triangle showed up again...it said that the desktop screen couldn't work, so I choose another desktop screen & everything seems to be fine. I really appreciate all the help here! Thanks so much!!!

well if the resolution and settings changed as we have suggested happened and you put on a monitor that happens to have the settings that your pc became reset to then sure that monitor will work. if the 2 monitors are different sizes etc they will have different settings, I am not understanding why the hesitancy to try a very simple system restore which can just as easily be reverted if it does not help (nothing lost), the system restore should be tried as soon as possible after an event so you remember exactly which calendar date to go back in time to.

Be absolutely sure you know the price of the repair if you decide to take the monitor somewhere. These days LCD monitors have come down in price dramatically. Many can be had for under $100

Remember too, a new monitor comes with a warranty, the repair may not and certainly not beyond 30 days.
