Calibrating battery

Instructions with a new laptop battery say I must callibrate it. Their first step told me to right click on a blank screen and choose 'properties'. When I right click I don't have a choice for 'properties'.

Any thoughts, suggestions will be appreciated.

FYI

The battery fuel gauge can go out of sync with the held-charge because of short charges and discharges. So the battery meter may show inaccurate info. Calibration re-syncs them.

Windows 7 does not have an option "Choose Properties" but it does have "Personalize" try that OPTION and see if you can get to where the instructions are guiding you.

What is the make and model of the Laptop? We can get complete instructions on that unit for conditioning the battery for that model.

I just saw a thing by one of the TV networks on attempting to rejuvenate/refresh and re-calibrating old laptop batteries .... to make sure you get max life. And to be sure the laptop wasn't cheating you with wrongful bad calibration with its calibration program.

Supposedly they talked to several manufactures for their laptop battery schooling.

Turn off screen saver & power options so it doesn't shut down or go to sleep on low battery or time,, turn down audio so it doesn't drive you crazy with warning beeping.

Let it run out of juice completely with no added loads of programs running... and 5 or more hours beyond - overnite was suggested. Then plug the ac adapter in and let it charge up.

This was for lithion type batteries.

It's not you it's the meter. I'm very familiar with this meter. A few things can be happening. One, the probe is shot. They are replacable for about $60.00. Second, the internal processor could be confused. Do you have it set on the proper calibration sol. 7.0 in the mode settings. Thirdly, the worst one it could be dead. Lets put this way, I work with ph and EC meters every day, and 1 out of 5 of this exact model wouldn't even out of the packaging. Hanna needs to stop making them in third world countries. I do not recommend this meter to anyone. I just thought of something. When you go to calibrate it and it ask for the ph 7.0 put it into the pH 4.0. Sounds wierd, but I have gotten this to work. I quess it reconfuses it or something. Suggestion: Look into the Blue Lab meters. They are out of New Zealand and are distributed in the us. Very solid equipment, and you do not have to calibrate the ppm/ec on this unit. Pretty cool. Good luck

Genes - I did try your suggestions - and the Dell won't power up. Wiggling the adapter didn't make a difference. Kay - I'm curious why Dell thought it might be a battery? And I don't have any steps I can walk you through beyond what Genes outlined. Unfortunately, my Dell won't power up. There are replacement batteries on Amazon for just over $20 - so maybe it's worth trying that in case a Dell just won't power up if the batter is bad - whether it's plugged in or not. --------------------- On a separate note, I did get the battery replacement for my lenovo - and it works. Now I can unplug my laptop and get about 3-4 hours (which isn't great - but running on battery is not what I usually need). I did calibrate it once. Charge it fully - let it discharge fully until it shut off. Then recharged it fully. The battery came with instructions to do that once. I am confused, however, as I thought Li-ion batteries didn't need that at all - and that batteries that do need that need a few cycles of it. So I'm wondering if I should go through a couple of more charge and discharge cycles. Thank you. Lynn.

I use a Davis Weather Station that is battery powered and solar charged. For me in S. California with lots of sunshine, this works very well for me. It will transmit information to my computer, and I also have it hooked up to my wireless router to transmit data to the web. Having surfed the Thermoworks site for a while, I’m now changing my plans. We had to take out the roast so many times. Plus, with the new oven it is not as high top to bottom or as deep front to back. We had to put the roasting pan in the oven in a direction that meant we could not read the leave-in meat thermometer without pulling the roasting pan out. Considering our $ 40 roast did not turn out, even though I don’t roast meats often, maybe looking for a cheap instant read is not where I should be going. Now I’m leaning toward a thermometer with a probe. (lascatx, I had typed this reply before seeing yours above! Computer froze and I had to come back to it. ESP) Plus, a few days before Christmas when making cheese, a probe model could have spared me the lengthy wait for a couple of quarts of cream to come to 190F on the stove, standing over it, without constantly having to dip my candy thermometer in. Plus when I make yogurt. Between the Thermoworks “DOT” and the Chef Alarm, which would you recommend? Thanks again.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4447, OS Vista Premium.

I searched thru Personalize and thought I had turned everything off, but my 'puter is still going to sleep when I'm not on it.

Their instructions tell me I'll have a screen that says "When compter is running batteries", ck 'Never' for all options. Under 'Alarms' option, don't ck 'Low battery alarm & Critical battery alarm' I've not found anything like this.

Interesting Mikie.

I thought that was the NiCad approach, and that lithium batteries were re-chargeable after partial discharge while maintaining optimum efficiency. Perhaps the key focus is the "old" battery. I am going to have to look at this further. I don't own a laptop, but I do have lithium power tools. If the concept should be effective all would be the same.
