Another builder trespassing - what to do?
Comments (19)Pink toes - we also have thought about putting up signs saying cameras in use just for now to help keep anyone out. We have mostly been looking at motion cameras that are battery/solar operated. So they will not run all the time but only when something trickers it. I will have to ask my husband how long you can record on them but I know it is a good length of space on the recorder. My husband hunts and he has though about using them in the past to just record the wildlife that comes up to his stand/feeder. Some are pretty cheap though and the pictures turn out pretty bad. I have seen some that are not to expensive and the pictures turn out great! Even night shots come out good! We are looking into which ones are priced right but still have a good quality photo. We want to put one up in a tree facing where someone would pull in so you could get the license plate and another on the corner of the house up in the tree to get a full shot. Do you have a Cabelas or a Academy where you live? You can find the motion cameras a lot of time in the bargain bin at Cabelas. I guess our thoughts are a few hundred dollars to invest in it as opposed to a few thousand dollar lose. I will let you know when I find out more info on them and how they work. I believe we are going this week to buy at least one of them. Our GC even told DH he would buy one to put out there. Hope that helps, Kelly...See Morewhy do builders want you to shop at specific stores?
Comments (12)My experience is that I told my contractors upfront that I wanted to buy my appliances, sink, fixtures, tile, and lighting myself. They were fine with that because we decided it upfront, I was very specific, and there was no waffling on my part (i.e., like "um, OK, some of the stuff I want to buy, and some you should buy, OK?"). Contractors HATE uncertainty, whether it's delivery time, lack of specifications, or the scope of work of what they're to be doing. So, if they can control those things, they can control costs and work time. So, the contractor steering you to favored suppliers, or having the contractor himself make those purchases gives him that control over how smoothly the entire project will go. If you feel confident in your abilities to source, purchase, and oversee fixtures and materials, you should do it, but you must be very specific with your contractor about it, and put it in writing in the Scope of Work. If you think you may be uncertain, or end up waffling, or not making decisions, you should go with your contractor's suggestions. BTW, my electrician was actually relieved I was to buy all the lighting, receptacles and switches. He didn't like dealing with that stuff, and having to sort out part numbers, lead times, and the like. He said "I'm an electrician, not a parts salesman"....See MoreWhy do builders want you to shop at specific stores?
Comments (35)"if you buy a Delta Faucet at HD, it's the same exact faucet you get at Ferguson or Amazon or anywhere so shopping at restrictive and often more expensive stores to placate your contractor is saving him money not you. " This is simply not true. Read aidan_m 's post. Specifically... "Nobody can ever convince me that the plastic faucet and the brass faucet are the same thing. The box and packaging look different. The plastic one says "Manufactured by ______ for _____ box store" The real one just has the name brand and model number. Once out of the box, both look identical. But when you pick them up, one is heavy brass, the other is light plastic. The finish on the plastic looks just like the finish on the metal. " I've dealt with it myself and it isn't just plumbing fixtures. "I've gotten better lumber from HD by hand selecting boards then when I ordered from 84 lumber " 84 is a small step above HD....See MoreWould you tell me why BM paint is the favorite here?
Comments (29)I have noticed that painters will use whatever they get for a discounted rate. Then many will try to convince their customers they are using high quality paint when they really are using the "builder grade" quality paint. The painter I used for years used what I asked him to use, although I knew that he really wanted to buy SW where he had a discount and account. Anyway, case in point is the entire house painting that my BFF just did in her home. I told her not to buy SW but her husband insisted. Her painter assured her that it was high quality so the ENTIRE house was painted in this crap. A couple weeks after it was done, she was wiping off a mark and the paint literally began to wash off the walls. The paper towel was barely damp. She freaked out and called the painter. The painter then contacted SW and it was revealed he did not use their best paint but certainly a paint that should have withstood light scrubbing. To their credit, SW paid the painter to use their Duration paint and repaint the ENTIRE house AGAIN. However, not only did the painter pass off his materials as better than they were but she later confirmed with SW that it was indeed "builder grade" lower-line paint that is heavily discounted to the trade; certainly not what she was insisting he use. And, the SW paint was not what it said it was either or else why would they pay to have her job done with better paint. Needless to say they will not only never use SW paints again, but they will insist on a specific line of paint and check those cans when they are brought in the house. Good painters IMHO are hard to find. I know I was depressed for a week when our painter moved out of state. He was the best!...See Moreamberm145_gw
